MACEDONIA IN HISTORY
Macedonia in Antiquity
Historical evidence and anchaeological finds point to the existence of Greek-speaking inhabitants of the North Pindus mountains in the period 2200-2100B.C.These Protohellenic tribes are thought to have broken away from the main bulk of the family of Indo-European peoples in the course of the 5th millenium B.C. and to have spread throughout the area known today as Northerh Greece. In the early centuries of the second milleniumB.C. three basic groups of Greek-speaking jpeoples can be distinguished : a) the South- Eastern group (in the NW part of Thessaly), whose principal representatives were the Ionians,b)the Eastern group (W.Macedonia),with two dialect subgroups, the Arcadian and tha Aeolian and c)the Western group, of which the tribe of the Makednoi was the most populous. At about this time, these Protohellenic tribes, led by the Ionians, began a slow advance southwards. Here they came into contact with the Prehellenicpopulations of Crete and the islands, wlo had reached a high cultural level. The Ionians were followed south by the Eastern group of peoples, those who used the Aeolian dialect. It was from these populations, which included the Achaeans, the Lapiths, the Minyans and others, that Mycenean civilisation was to spring.

A Few historical facts
The vine was cultivated over wide areas of ancient Greece, not only in Athens and the Peloponnese but also on the islands, in Macedonia and Thrace. Macedonia in particular has a long tradition of wine production. According to Clearchus of Soloi, the first to discover the art of wine-making was Maron, son of Evanthis, whose fame is commemorated in the name of Maroneia in Thrace. Over the ensuing centuries, and up until the late Mycenean period, our knowledge of Macedonian wine production is limited. The most important source of information is the poet Homer. In the Odyssey he states that Maron had offered ten amphorae of wine to Ulysses, which the latter used to intoxicate the Cyclops. The same wine, from the city of Ismaros, was favoured by the Achaeans during the Trojan campaign. We have much more information on the cultivation of the vine and production of wine in Macedonia during the archaic and classical periods. Our main sources are contemporary literary texts, representations on coins (mainly from the 6 th century BC) and, to a lesser extent, representations on vases from the classical period.

Macedonia
History
Historical Macedonia (from whence Alexander the Great set out to conquer the ancient world in the 4th century BC) is today contained mostly in present-day Greece, a point Greeks are always quick to make when discussing contemporary Macedonia's use of that name. The Romans subjugated the Greeks of ancient Macedonia in the mid-2nd century BC, and when the empire was divided in the 4th century AD, this region became part of the Eastern Roman Empire ruled from Constantinople. Slav tribes settled here in the 7th century, changing the ethnic character of the area. In the 9th century, the region was conquered by the Bulgarian tsar Simeon, and later, under Tsar Samuel, Macedonia was the centre of a powerful Bulgarian state. Samuel's defeat by Byzantium in 1014 ushered in a long period in which Macedonia passed back and forth between Byzantium, Bulgaria and Serbia. After the crushing defeat of Serbia by the Turks in 1389, the Balkans became part of the Ottoman Empire, and the cultural character of the region again changed. In 1878, Russia defeated Turkey, and Macedonia was ceded to Bulgaria by the Treaty of San Stefano. The Western powers, fearing the creation of a powerful Russian satellite in the heart of the Balkans, forced Bulgaria to give Macedonia back to Turkey. In 1893, Macedonian nationalists formed the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (IMRO) to fight for independence from Turkey, culminating in the Ilinden uprising of May 1903, which was brutally suppressed three months later. Although nationalist leader Goce Delcev died before the revolt, he became the symbol of Macedonian nationalism.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... MACEDONIA The literal center of the Balkans, Macedonia is composed of a complex ethnic mix. The region of Macedonia was a Roman province in 146 BC and was part of the Byzantine realm although its population was shifting in response to invasion by Slavic peoples. The current population is unrelated to the Macedonians of ancient times (Alexander the Great or his father, Philip of Macedonia, for example). In 1371, Macedonia fell to the Ottomans, although the Bulgarians, Serbians, and Byzantines all sought to control the region. For the next hundreds of years, the people of Macedonia spoke Greek but thought of themselves as 'Slavs'. After World War I, Macedonia was partitioned among Greek, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia. In fact, it was because Bulgaria coveted Macedonia that it allied with Nazi Germany and occupied the region in 1941. However, it was Tito who prevailed and in 1946, the Macedonian People's Republic was formed as part of the reconfigured Yugoslavia. With Tito's death decades later came uncertainty but by the early 1990s, the handwriting was on the wall: independence was being sought by various of the republics and Macedonia followed suit in January 1992. It took 3 years for Greece and Macedonia to reach agreement over the country's name. Macedonia agreed to make it perfectly clear in the constitution and on the flag that there were no claims and never would be on the Greek region of the same name.

Macedonian Makedoniya, officially Republic of Macedonia (1994 preliminary population 1,936,877), 9,925 square miles (25,713 square kilometers) in the South central Balkan peninsula; formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. Macedonia is bordered by Yugoslavia (North), Albania (West), Greece (South), and Bulgaria (East). The country is largely mountainous and is bisected by the Vardar River valley. The population is about two-thirds Macedonian, and many belong to the Orthodox Church. There is a sizable Albanian Muslim minority, concentrated mainly in Western Macedonia. Macedonian (related to Bulgarian) is the official language.
Skopje city (1987 estimated population 445,000) is the capital of Macedonia on the Vardar River. Dating from Roman times, it fell to Serbia (1282) and to the Turks (1392). Part of Yugoslavia after 1918, it became (1946) the capital of the new constituent republic of Macedonia, which gained independence in 1992. The largest cities are Skopje (the capital), Bitola (Bitolj), and Prilep.
Macedonian leaders did not initially favor independence for their constituent republic, but after Slovenia and Croatia left the federation Macedonians grew wary of Serbian domination in a smaller Yugoslavia. In 1991 Macedonians voted for independence from Yugoslavia, and the government, led by President Kiro Gligorov, sought (1992) international recognition of its independence when the European Community (EC) recognized Croatia and Slovenia. Greece, fearing possible Macedonian claims on Greek Macedonia, sought a change in the new nation's name and was able to slow, but not prevent, international recognition of Macedonia. In 1992 a small group of UN peacekeepers were sent to the country to discourage possible fighting in Kosovo from spilling into Macedonia. Gligorov was reelected president in 1994.
