International recognition of The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's (FYROM) independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed by Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols.
Greece finally lifted its trade blockade in 1995, and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, despite continued disagreement over FYROM's use of "Macedonia." FYROM's large Albanian minority and the de facto independence of neighboring Kosovo continue to be sources of ethnic tension.

    and Greek Macedonia
Greek Macedonia is one of the most beautiful regions of Greece, and an area which will grow in importance as the commercial and cultural center of the Balkans in the years to come.
4000 years of history is a very conservative estimate for Macedonia because in the Petrolona Cave in Halkidiki they found the 700,000 year old remains of one of the earliest inhabitants of the country we know know of as Greece.
In the Neolithic period which followed, people lived in mudbrick houses, cultivated the land and made utensils and art from clay. The small clay idols from Nea Nikomidia (6.000 B.C.) and the clay heads from Drama (4.000 B.C.) reveal their sensitivity and their attempts at self-expression.
By 2300 BC the people who appeared upon the scene began making weapons with iron, and jewlery of bronze, reaching new heights in civilization and showing signs of the culture we now know of as Greek. Many of these artifacts have been found in the funeral mounds of Vergina.
During the Archiac period the area began to be colonized by Greeks from the south, bringing Macedonia into contact with the rest of the Greek world and introducing art and architecture from Athens, Corinth and Ionian Greece, the coast of what is now Turkey.

    CULTURAL HERITAGE
The Republic of Macedonia cultural heritage reflects the ancient tendency to maintain spiritual continuity without which no human action may be conceived. Its variety, starting from pre-history, ancient Greece, the period of the Roman Empire rule, the Middle Age, the Osmanli Empire oppression and the reformation of peoples in this region- has left numerous proofs of its essence. In this context one may emphasize the significance of archeological sites, the ancient town architecture and the sacral architecture rich with frescos, icons and carvings of extraordinary significance worldwide. Among sacral architecture items, one may point out major monastery units dating back to IX-XV centuries (the St. Naum in Ohrid, the St. Jovan Bigorski, the St. Joakim Osogoski, the St. Gavril Lesnovski, the Markov Mansatir, the Poloski Manstir etc). Among profane architecture items, one may emphasize the significance of settlements or settlement parts bearing middle-age features, such as the old towns in Ohrid, Kratovo, Krusevo, Struga, Debar, Veles, Novo Selo-Stip, Skopje, as well as of archeological sites from the times BC such as the sites of Skupi, Stobi, Heraklea, Bargala etc..

    Archeological remnants
Macedonia is a treasury of cultural wealth: the works of old builders and mosaic masters, icons, frescoes, carvings, paintings, old church books and other documents, or various folk handicrafts, can be found here. A considerable part of the mobile cultural, historical and archeological treasures have been "bought", or seized, by the conquerors. Today, exhibits of Macedonian origin can be found in the world's biggest museums and libraries.
The historians very often refer to Macedonia as a magical country of archeology.
Here are the remnants of the ancient cities Stobi (Gradsko), Heraclea Lincestis (Bitola), Lihnidos (Ohrid),Skupi (Skopje). The basilica mosaic in Heraklea Liknestis is one of the most famous antique mosaics. There are numerous remnants from the Roman and early Christian age that are still being excavated. Several churches, the most renowned among which is the St. Panteleimon's in Ohrid, bear witness of the times of the teacher St. Clement.
