Culture
Of Macedonia's present population, 66% are Macedonian Slavs who bear no relation whatsoever to the Greek-speaking Macedonians of antiquity. Many ethnographers consider the Macedonians ethnic Bulgarians, and the official position of the Bulgarian government is that Macedonians are Bulgarians, a view that only a minority of Macedonians support. Ethnic Albanians make up one of the largest minority groups. The 50,000 Macedonians living in northern Greece are subject to assimilatory pressures by the Greek government, which calls them 'Slavophone Greeks'. Macedonian is a South Slavic language divided into western and eastern dialects. The Macedonian literary language is based on the central dialects of Veles, Prilep and Bitola. Macedonian shares all the characteristics that separate Bulgarian from the other Slavic languages, evidence that it's closely related to Bulgarian. The Cyrillic alphabet, predominant in Macedonia, is based on the alphabet developed by two Thessaloniki brothers, St Cyril and St Methodius, in the 9th century. It was taught by their disciples at a monastery in Ohrid, from whence it spread across the eastern Slavic world. Street names are printed in Cyrillic script only; road signs use both Cyrillic and Latin scripts. In Macedonian folk music, the drone of the

Macedonia Time and Date Macedonia ( Yugoslav Republic ) Culture Back to Top traditional families were large, the new urban families are small, especially among the population that is not ethnic Albanian. The society is traditionally patriarchal, with Orthodox Christianity exerting a strong influence among the non-Muslim population. Traditional clothing is colorful, with rich embroidery, but folk costumes are no longer worn by many people, who dress instead like other southern Europeans. Traditional foods have much in common with those elsewhere in the Balkans, favoring breads and roasted meats. The republic produces excellent fruits and vegetables and is famous for its peppers. The wines are very good and are being increasingly produced for export. As might be expected in a country with such a diverse population, the cultural life of the FYROM is rich. Folk music draws on Byzantine traditions as well as those associated with the Muslim cultures of the Middle East. Current popular music groups have drawn on this mixed heritage to produce strikingly original music. Many of the Orthodox Christian monasteries and churches are decorated with beautiful frescoes and other works of art. In 1995 a FYROM film, Before the Rain, gained recognition in the United States and was a finalist for an Academy Award in the best foreign-language film category. An internationally renowned gathering of poets is held every year in Struga, on the shores of Lake Ohrid.

Barbarism and the Erasure of Culture
The destruction of Sveti Anastasi
by Christopher Deliso
August 24, 2001
W hen the revered fourteenth-century Monastery of Sveti Anastasi in Leshok was blown up earlier this week, Macedonian Government Spokesman Antonio Milososki summarized the event concisely: "This," he said, "is barbarism." Milososki's simple statement captured the essence of the matter: that the destruction of such a historical and cultural treasure as the Leshok Monastery was an act that could only be described as barbaric, a thoughtless, misanthropic destruction of a unique and irreplaceable piece of the common European heritage. Yet for all its ignorance, this act meant something more than a bunch of unemployed young terrorists playing with explosives (though such individuals no doubt executed the destruction). It was a deliberate attempt to erase any trace of Macedonia's historical continuity, to wipe the presence of the past clear off the map. As such, the destruction of the Leshok Monastery was a calculated attempt by Albanian terrorists to exert their territorial dominance, by obliterating a valuable part of Macedonian heritage, a treasure of art and religion that had been listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

DISCOVERIES ABOUT THE LITERACY, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE OF THE ANCIENT MACEDONIANS by Vasil Ilyov Macedonia language, alphabet and culture The oldest artefacts on the Balkan peninsula that testifies to the first contemplation of man about art and abstract geometry in space date between 50.000 and 35.000 B.C. while the mid Danube region was populated between 350.000 and 250.000 B.C. which can be proven by the archaeological material that has been found in Hungary and Romania. Up till now it is assumed that the oldest graphisms on the Balkan peninsula, according to some scientists, are dated between 10.650 to 10.100 B.C. and similar graphisms to these, according to Piete, in western Europe are dated from the beginning of the young Paleolith, i.e. from around 25.000 B.C. ( Picture 2 ) and by 13.000 - 10.000 B.C. it is said that they go on to the phase called the Ideo-sinthetic alphabet. According to our newest palaeographic and paleolinguistic research we can state that signs of the sound alphabet have been discovered on the localities: Lepeneski Vir and Vincha in Serbia, Karanovo, Gradeshnitsa and Sitovo in Bulgaria, Tartaria in Romania as well as many localities in Macedonia. They go as follows: Tsrna Loma or Ilina Gora at Osinchani close to Skopje ( Picture 4 Tserye at Govrlevo close to Skopje ( Picture 5 and Pictture 6 ), Skochivir canyon close to Bitola, the Kratovo region the locality "Grmada" or "Gramada" east of Dolno Dupeni close to Resen, Trebenishte close to Ohrid etc. as well as the island of Lemn in the Aegean sea, the Pizza cave in Corinth and the island Lesb in Greece etc.

Macedonian Customs You Should Be Aware Of
  • When you go to visit a friend, you should take a gift, like flowers, chocolates or fruit, and a special toy or candy for each of the children of the house. When you give flowers they should be in bouquets with ODD numbers, not even. Bouquets of flowers with even numbers of flowers are only taken to funerals. Macedonians generally do not plan too far ahead, or confirm their plans until right before the event. So, almost every conversation regarding possible plans ends with, "OK, so we'll hear each other", meaning you need to call and talk to each other again before the event. Macedonians most often drink Turkish coffee, and ethnic Albanians usually drink Russian Tea. When you have had enough tea be sure and turn your spoon upside down on top of your glass, or they will just keep pouring! Bread is a major part of the diet here, and it's said that the average household eats one loaf of bread per person per day.
