T ropical birds in a smuggled suitcase. Expensive. Beautiful. Dead. But for field biologist Robyn Devara, this latest grim reminder of the illegal trade in endangered species includes an unexpected surprise—one of the birds is unknown to science.
H ot on the trail of the mysterious macaw, Robyn finds herself stationed at an isolated field camp in the Costa Rican jungle, where she must deal with a research team that includes a former wildlife trafficker, his angry nemesis, sundry wide-eyed graduate students, and a university professor who seems to think that grad students fall below paramecia on the academic tree of life. All this as well as shifty maintenance workers, a sexy project leader, and a shadowy group of armed poachers with itchy trigger fingers.
I t’s certainly an exciting change from routine paperwork. Exciting, that is, until communication with the outside world is cut off, deadly snakes start slithering into cabins, and members of the field team begin to die. . .

Anodorhynchus macaws as followers of extinct megafauna: an hypothesis

Instituto Brasileiro de Meio Ambiente e Recursos Naturais Renováveis-IBAMA Ararajuba , the Bulletin of the Brazilian Society of Ornithology, may be ordered for US$20 per issue by faxing a VISA (only) number and expiration date to David Oren at (55)(91) 226-1615. For more information, you may contact the Secretary of the SBO, Julio Cesar Roma RESUMO.

This perch on the web is a starting point for sharing what we have learned in over twenty years of interaction with our flock. We want to help everyone to understand and enjoy their companion parrots as much as we do.
We also accept birds that need to be rehabilitated, or socialized or just retired. We have re-homed many birds in the last 12 years, very successfully. We are ready to "branch out" and offer some of our available birds for adoption on the web.
Please visit often, we plan to have a web cam by the fall of 2004 so that you can observe our playground and watch the interaction of our flock

"Polly wants some poison": Detoxifying strategies of Amazon Macaws
T he diet of the Amazonian macaw is made up primarily of seeds. These brightly colored birds, found through the rain forests of the Amazon, dextrously pluck fruit off trees, tear it open and dig out the hard seed at the center. No seed seems to be too hard for the bill of the macaw to crack, and their diet is quite varied, from the seeds of the mahognay to those of the rubber tree. Macaws are curious birds and will try to eat just about anything resembling a seed that they can get their beak on. But this could lead to serious problems in the rain forest, where some of the deadliest poisons in the world are manufactured by its botanical inhabitants.
C harles Munn has been studying macaws for years and he asserts that many of the seeds macaws eat are in fact toxic, particularly in the dry season, (August through September), when the picking are especially slim. So, how then do these birds survive this fatal fare? In his years of watching macaw behavior in the Amazon, Munn noticed that the birds spent at least two to three hours per day at a clay and mineral lick along a riverbed. He was able to identify how often birds went to the lick and how much time they spent there by using the distinctive facial markings of each bird as an identifying charcteristic. At first, Munn thought that the birds were just using the clay lick to obtain minerals their diet might not otherwise provide. But the discovery by one of his graduate students of the toxic elements in the seeds made him rethink his ideas.

Which means 78 minutes of recording time as standard.
All this at lower prices too ! With the increased memory also comes:
  • 63 levels on the Green and DACtyl Macaws 18 hours of recording time with the internal flashcard models ! Of course, there is no limit to the percentage of message time which may be recorded for each message.
What is the Macaw ?
The Macaw is a communication device used by people who do not have functional speech. Pictures or words are used to make an overlay (or a display) which represent the messages stored in each key. The person using the Macaw selects the message and the Macaw speaks it for them. A person with speech records the desired messages onto the Macaw. The Macaw is mostly used by people who do not have the ability to spell the messages they wish to communicate. Instead they can press or select the key which depicts the required message, or whole words can be used on the overlay. People who use the Macaw include children or adults with Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, Developmental Delay, Acquired Brain Injury and Stroke. The diagnosis is not a critical component. If the person does not have functional speech and needs a device which does not reply on spelling then the Macaw may be suitable.

Youth Hostels Eurail Passes ... Travel Phonecard Bolivia By Jack Simpson, Jr. Way Up High Getting off the plane, we hurried through a sputtering of snowflakes toward the door under the sign. Flopping down on the first available wooden bench, I wasn't sure if I was going to pass out or vomit. Or both. Giving my passport to Donna, I asked if she could try to get us both checked through customs. Not only did she get our passports stamped, she also dragged our baggage through check-in. Meanwhile, I stayed collapsed on my bench, as helpful as a dehydrated cadaver. Downtown La Paz When Donna returned to retrieve me, she said, "It's the altitude. Remember, we're almost fourteen thousand feet above sea level." "Uf-f-f," I replied.

DIVERSITY, RICHNESS AND ABUNDANCE OF MACAW POPULATIONS IN THE PERUVIAN AMAZON - Tania Paratian Home About Lago Preto Red Uakari Monkeys Giant Otters ... Photographs Many Neotropical parrots currently face human pressures such as habitat loss, capture for wildlife trade, shortage of nest site availability and local use of the species. A number of macaw species have declined through their range as a result of these pressures; eight species of macaw are being currently in danger of extinction. The aim of the research was to study the variance in macaw diversity, richness and abundance in the Yavari valley in different habitats and in response to human pressure. Five species of macaws were observed, A. araruana A. chloroptera A. manilata and A. severa . In this study measures species richness and abundance as well as diversity of macaws in four study sites of with different human pressures. Data were collected for two of these sites, Lago Preto and Estirao do Equador during the summer 2001; and for the two other sites, Yarari Miri and Tahuayo, data were used from previous studies. The study also measured species diversity, richness and abundance in three different forest habitats, the lowland forest, the upland forest and the palm swamp. In that study group size and density were also looked at. A. macao
