Breeder of Blue and Gold Macaws, Quaker parrots, Cockatiels, Parakeets. Being an avid animal lover all my life, brought me to the bird world. The large parrots as well as the smaller species are remarkable pets and family members. They are excellent companions, and a constant source of entertainment. Parrots are sometimes misunderstood. Some people believe that they are unaffectionate and not cuddle worthy. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Parrots make great pets and companions for a number of reasons. Parrots that have been accustomed to change are very adaptive to new environments and readily accept changes in schedule. Birds are very cuddly animals. They love to be petted and stroked, and need attention, affection, and discipline. Without discipline, you could end up with a very spoiled, demanding bird. When you look into those eyes, you can see the intelligence and playfulness waiting to be brought out, not to mention the love, devotion, and loyalty.

You are here: BBC Animals Children's Zone Macaw These colourful parrots are appealing to humans because of their appearance and ability to talk, but collecting for the pet trade has had a worrying impact on wild populations. Macaws were originally thought to occur around the Chinese port of Macao, hence the name 'macaw'. They are found in sub-tropical regions of Central and South America, but macaw populations are declining in the wild due to habitat destruction, hunting and collecting for the pet trade. Macaws are brightly coloured to show that they are healthy and free from parasites, whereas the bright green plumage of parakeets actually helps to camouflage them against tropical leaves. They have large, curved bills, which are extremely strong and can crack open the toughest of nuts and seeds. A lot of the seeds and unripe fruit they feed on contain poisons, so wild parrots eat clay from riverbanks to counteract the poison, and stop them from becoming ill. Until 1990 the Spix's macaw was thought to be extinct, but one surviving male was found living in the wild in north-east Brazil. Sadly, this bird has since been reported dead, and the only surviving Spix's macaws are in captivity. Zoos are trying to breed from captive birds, and conservationists hope that some members of this rare species will be released back into the wild in the future.

In pet shops and small ads columns across the country, exotic birds such as parrots and macaws are sold as pets. They may make rewarding companions but this trade is threatening entire populations of birds because smugglers steal the chicks from the wild before bringing them to Britain. In this week’s Nature, Lionel Kelleway meets two rare Central American scarlet macaws who used to be pets, but are now contributing to the fight for the survival of their rare sub-species. Lionel also considers the troubling questions – if they were to become extinct, would it make any difference to their forest home and if not, should we really be spending valuable resources trying to save them?

  • I got these developed in Peru, so they are not that good. But it gives you an idea of what we've been doing. All these were taken on the same climb (except the last one). This photo os me next to a nest. Behind me is the River Tombopata. Yes that is a beard! Only cold showers here, no shaving! Nancy took the photo from another rope.
  • This is the view the other direction and down. That is the center I am living/working at.
  • This is one of the birds that is trying to make babies at this nest. They've laid six eggs this season and have had no luck.
  • This is Nancy coming up a rope close by my rope. We love climbing.
  • The same bird flew over to a tree I was on. He is shaking.
  • This is a baby in another nest. It is about to fledge (leave the nest) Macaws fledge after 3 months. (It took me about 360 months :-).

07 September 2002 Looking for Macaws Footage "I am looking for some archive footage of macaws on a clay-lick in Peru. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who might have some footage from Peru, in particular the popular eco-tourist sites at Tambopata and Manu. The species that I am interested in are red-and-green, blue-and-gold and scarlet macaws (plus red-billed, chestnut-fronted and blue-headed macaws). Our film crew were desperately unlucky with the weather, so didn't manage to get the shots that we needed. If anyone has some suitable footage, preferably shot on digital camera (but other formats also considered), please contact me, Nikki Stew, on: nstew@tigressbristol.co.uk

    S. BALASUBRAMANIAN
    S. Balasubramanian is a veteran media personality. For the last 33 years, he has been Editor and Publisher of Ananda Vikatan, the widely read Tamil weekly magazine founded by his celebrated father, S.S. Vasan. He has added to this Junior Vikatan and is Managing Director of Vasan Publications Ltd. In 1987, the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly earned national notoriety by ordering the arrest of Balasubramanian for publishing on the cover of his magazine a cartoon on legislators. After protests round the country, the Editor won his release but was not satisfied with that; he filed a law suit against his wrongful arrest, asked for token compensation, and won his case hands down. Balasubramanian is also known for his serious hobbies. Known for his 'green fingers', he is an expert farmer with a special interest in the cultivation of high-yielding winter crop vegetables. He has also had notable success in breeding high-quality German Shepherd dogs. But the hobby that has made him the leading Indian name in the fancy is the breeding of rare and new mutations of parrots. He is India's most successful and versatile aviculturist. Recently, Balasubramanian achieved, with a pair of Green-Winged Macaws, a world first on his bird farm on the outskirts of Chennai. Here is the story in his own words:
