Many people mistakenly believe that macaws are the 'macho' birds of the parrot family. This is simply not the case. If raised properly, macaws can be one of the most gentle and loyal companions of all the parrot family. Many macaws are weaned far too young and this can result in behavioral insecurities which can diminish their pet potential. Also listed are several articles that are not specifically about macaws but have very good information which will help to understand their behavior and development. See the back issue form for information about ordering. Drawing by Nancy Boudreau.

Rainforest Expeditions 2004 Wildlife Info of Tambopata Send this page to a friend For thousands of years, mankind has admired the beauty and identified with the charisma and intelligence of macaws. Visitors to the Gold Museum in Lima admire their beautifully colored feathers in ancient tapestries weaved by the Paracas and Nazca cultures in reverence to their deitic properties. Archaeologists in Lambayaque and La Libertad recurrently find their skeletal remains and skulls intermingled with valuable objects in the tombs of Moche warriors and priests, proof that our habit of trading and rearing them is as old as the fascination they inspire in us. The first South American bird to be forced across the Atlantic was a macaw: "When Columbus returned to Spain to give notice of the discovered isles, he brought with him as proof some macaws, which attracted more attention than the gold ..." (German Arciniegas, El Continente de los Siete Colores ) Many centuries later, mankind´s attraction to macaws has generated industries of varying magnitudes and differing impacts on their raw material of choice. The passion which drives people from all around the world to spend thousands of dollars to keep a macaw in their home or travel halfway around the world to see one in the wild will eventually be the cause of their extinction or the key to their salvation.

Welcome to my aviary!
All of my baby birds are raised with loving care for you. We emphasize keeping our baby birds well-socialized, happy and healthy to ensure that you receive the best possible pet bird for your loving home. While growing up in Poland, I always dreamed of coming to America. It was so wonderful that someone could take up any profession. For any hobby, all you have to do is read about it, learn it, get the materials, and begin. Seventeen years ago, while working as the commercial attache for the American Embassy in Warsaw, I had the opportunity to come to America. I knew I wanted to work around animals, and bird breeding soon became my passion. I am now a successful breeder of Cockatoos, Macaws, Mini-Macaws, African Greys, Amazons, a variety of Conures, Black headed Caiques, Blue headed Pionus, Dusky Pionus, Indian Ringnecks, Plumhead Parakeets, Australian Parakeets, Grey Cheek Parakeets, Quaker Parrots, and Lady Gouldian Finches. It gives me the greatest joy to see my baby birds grow to be loving pet birds that enrich others' lives. I hope you enjoy visiting my site and seeing some of my parrots.

Military macaws ( Ara militaris) are among the largest parrots. These lively, boisterous birds are often overlooked as plain-colored compared to the more brilliantly colored macaws. But, as with other macaws, military macaws are very intelligent and relatively easy to train. They are a favorite for shows and trick training. Military macaws are mostly green with a bright red frontal patch. Though similar to Buffon's macaws, military macaws are a bit smaller and have a darker forest green color. The naked facial skin, which blushes when the macaw is excited, is white with black feather lines. The tail is long and tapered. The underside of the wings are gold and the upper side of the flights feathers are blue. Their beaks are large and strong for opening large nuts (large species).

Hi welcome to THE KIDS PAGE. As you have probably guessed by now the kids are exotic birds. Twelve to be exact. Nine Greenwing Macaws, Mom (Red), Dad (Sly) and seven babies that they presented to me. The names of the seven babies are: Parrot Mason, Sherlock, Columbo, Wallenda, Kamikaze, Genji, and Kenji. Included are also a Hyacinth Macaw, Devon, a Blue & Gold, Kokomo (Moee), and Morrigan the Moluccan Cockatoo. They are quite a handful and a very amusing bunch. They are always into mischief and always learning new things. Take a trip through our little wonderland and learn more about us. This picture is of "Devon".

Song being played = Gone Away Gone Away is dedicated to Sherlock's clutchmate and sister. She was only five months old when she died of visceral gout, I didn't even have time to name her but I called her my Loving Baby Girl because she would jump out of her cage into my arms she loved me so much. Her passing caused me a great deal of heartache and she is sorely missed. Also it is dedicated to a chick that did not make it to a day old, don't know what went wrong but the poor thing passed away. Both of these birds are now in Macaw heaven and I hope they are living the happy lives they would have had on earth with me.

Blueand-gold macaws. June 2000. In 1992 the team developed a technique to cut the tops off the palm trees in the hopes of attracting nesting macaws.
http://www.duke.edu/~djb4/Palm Swamp TRC I.htm
Macaw Reproduction and Management in Tambopata Peru I: Blue-and-gold Macaws June 2000 by Donald Brightsmith, Ph.D. Duke University Department of Biology and Research Director Rainforest Expeditions The Blue-and-gold Macaw ( Ara ararauna In the early 1990’s when researchers first arrived at Tambopata Research Center (TRC) Blue-and-gold Macaws were common visitors to the adjacent clay lick, but none nested in the immediate vicinity. It was known from other areas that the birds nested in dead palms, especially in the large palm swamps, or Aguajales, dominated by the Aguaje palm ( Mauritia flexuosa ). Researchers soon found a small palm swamp near TRC but there were no suitable dead trees for nesting. In 1992 the team developed a technique to cut the tops off the palm trees in the hopes of attracting nesting macaws. Cutting off the top exposes the soft center of the palm to water, fungus, and beetles that all combine to rot the soft center of the palm away while leaving only the hard outer layers of the palm intact. This produces deep tubes perfect for nesting macaws. Once the palms rotted out to a point where they were deep enough, the Blue-and-gold Macaws began to use them (Nycander et al 1995). Since 1992, a total of 42 palms have been cut and they have been used extensively by both Blue-and-gold Macaws and Red-bellied macaws ( Orthopsittaca [Ara] manilata th and final nest, only one egg hatched and this chick went on to fledge about 90 days later. So in summary, five nests started, three failed (at one of these the adults re-laid) and the other three fledged one chick each.

http://www.duke.edu/~djb4/Nest box use TRC II.htm
Macaw Reproduction and Management in Tambopata, Peru II: Nest box design and use August 2000 By Donald Brightsmith, Ph.D. Rainforest Expeditions and Duke University Large macaws are among the most beautiful Neotropical birds, but unfortunately they are also among the most endangered. Macaws face many threats including clearing for agriculture, logging, and the pet trade. Logging often targets the biggest trees, the ones that have the large tree cavities that macaws need to nest. In addition, many collectors will cut nest trees to get out the young. As a result, the number of available nest sites for macaws has been greatly reduced in recent years. This fact is compounded by the fact that suitable natural cavities are often very rare even in pristine old-growth forests that have not suffered any real impacts from logging (Munn et al 1991). The shortage of nest sites is a serious issue and one that may inhibit the recovery of macaw populations throughout the Neotropics, even in areas where reserves are successfully established. In response to the need to develop artificial nest sites for macaws, researchers working at the Tambopata Research Center in southeastern Peru were the first to successfully produce nest boxes useable by wild macaws (Nycander et al. 1995). The first “nest boxes” were actually made from the central barrel-shaped section of
