Conservation efforts in Red Bank Village have aided an increase in Belize's macaw population W hen we first heard that there was a place in Belize where you could go and see Scarlet Macaws by the dozens, every year, we didn't believe it. How could it be so simple to find such a magnificent bird, the sighting of which is considered the "Holy Grail" for birders in Belize? Having contemplated trekking deep into the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of the Cayo District, for the sole purpose of spotting a Scarlet Macaw, the prospect of watching flocks of the brilliant red creatures flying free and wild overhead was inconceivable. Red Bank Village (pop. 700), in Stann Creek District, is the seasonal home of one of the largest concentrations of Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao) in Belize, and, all of Central America. The story of this sleepy Maya village first came to light about three years ago, after a group of researchers reported an apparent slaughter of Scarlet Macaws on a riverbank nearby. A project was subsequently undertaken, educating the local population about the rarity of the Scarlet Macaw and it's new value as a tourist attraction for the area. Through grants from Belize Audubon Society (BAS), and Programme for Belize, the "Scarlet Macaw Group" was formed, and the villagers are learning how to profit from tourism. You have been waiting hours in the dark for this first sight, eyes trying to focus on dim shapes, ears straining for sounds over the rushing of the river waters. Parrots begin to arrive from all directions. Flocks of Mealy Amazons land on an outcropping and immediately set to eating clay, while the Macaws gather in the trees atop the cliff and wait. More and more arrive, until the trees are flowering with splashes of blue, red, yellow and green. Still they wait. MACAWS Data Processing by VAD Algorithms By Steven Greco The MACAWS lidar was flown aboard a series of aircraft missions over the western and southwestern United States during May-July of 1996. This document describes the processing and analyzing of line-of-sight (LOS) velocities from the various missions. One objective was to process the data taken during 180 degree aircraft turns into a series of Velocity Azimith Displays (VADs) for the purpose of simulating what one might see from a conically scanning lidar from space. Vertical profiles of the horizontal winds were then computed. Due in part to the high quality of the data, Flight 18 (July 2, 1996) of the 1996 MACAWS missions was selected as a case study to illustrate the algorithm development, data processing, and analysis schemes employed to construct the VADs and compute vertical profiles of winds. Figures 1 a b c show the ground tracks for three individual VADs (1, 3, and 5) taken during Flight 18. VADs 1, 3, and 5 were selected for analysis due to their similar locations. Ancillary information such as aircraft heading, altitude rolls, pitch and drift for each of the three VADs are depicted in Figures 2 a b c .
