Objectives of the Lesson: Students will:
  • Research the different species of Macaw found in Manu and other parts of the Amazon. Write a children's book with drawings about Macaws. Identify the different species of Macaw found in Manu and other parts of the Amazon Basin. (Optional Secondary Activity) Identify the reasons for decreasing populations of Macaws in the wild.
  • Background Information: Two prevalent species of Macaw found in Manu are the Scarlet Macaw and Blue and Yellow Macaw. They travel in flocks eat fruits, nuts and seeds. Often Macaws carry the seeds in their stomach and distribute them through the jungle to spread new species in new areas. Macaws also eat clay in Manu which is believed to be an anti-toxin or neutralizer for the poisons found in some of the seeds they eat. There are several species of Macaw found in the Amazon. Some of these are the Blue and Yellow Macaw (Ara arrauna), Red and Green Macaw (Ara chloroptera), Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), and Military Macaw (Ara militaris). There are a number of other less common Macaws that can be researched by secondary students should the instructor wish to travel in this direction. These are the Caninde Macaw (Ara Glaucogularis), the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambigua), Yellow-naped Macaw, (Ara auricollis), Lafresnaye's Macaw (Ara rubrogenys), Red Bellied Macaw (Ara manilata) and others. Scientific names are provided solely to make research on the world wide web easier. (Sweeney, Roger G., Macaws, Barrons Educational Series, Inc. 1992.)

The Endangered Great Green Macaw Ara ambigua The Great Green macaw is an endangered and beautiful bird of Caribbean lowland rainforests. Its last stronghold appears to be along the Nicaraguan border near Laguna del Lagarto Lodge and Tortuguero NP. The Field Guide to the Wildlife of Costa Rica has this to say about the Great Green: " The intense green-and-blue body, highlighted by red tail feathers, make this imposing member of the parrot family a stunning symbol of the country's diminishing rainforests. Unfortunately, it is a victim of both deforestation and the illegal pet trade." The Great Green ranges widely across the Caribbean lowlands in seach of food but the amount of suitable remaining nesting habitat appears very small, the number of feeding trees is declining, and the number of birds left is very low - probably only thirty to thirty-five pairs. " (That was in 2000). The bill of this macaw is larger than that of the Scarlet macaw. It is adapted to cracking open the very tough nuts of the swamp almond tree (Dipteryx panamensis). The life cycle of the Great Green is tied very closely to Dipteryx trees it nests in hollow cavities of this tree and depends on its fruits as a major food. Below, a Scarlet macaw competes with a Great Green for food. These stunning macaws may live more than sixty years.

    THE WORLD'S LARGEST MACAW LICK
The world's largest known mineral clay lick, where hundreds of parrots and macaws of up to 15 species congregate daily to ingest the detoxifying clay, is located less than 500 meters from Tambopata Research Center. The 1994 National Geographic article on macaws begins with a vivid description of their activity at the Tambopata Research Center clay lick : " When the morning sun clears the Amazon tree line in southeastern Peru and strikes a gray-pink clay bank on the upper Tambopata River, one of the world´s most dazzling wildlife spectacles is nearing its riotous peak. The steep bank has become a pulsing, 130 foot high palette of red, blue, yellow and green as more than a thousand parrots squabble over choice perches to grab a beakful of clay, a vital but mysterious part of their diet. More than a dozen parrot species will visit the clay lick throughout the day, but this midmorning crush belongs to the giants of the parrot world, the macaws."

The Scarlet Macaw is arguably the most magnificent bird of the parrot family. With their wide strong wings, macaws can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. They often fly in pairs or small groups and often call to each other in raucous hoarse voices. Macaws appear to prefer higher elevations and riparian (riverine) forests. They are known to have very large territories. They prefer to nest in holes high up in trees and lay one or two eggs. They feed on specific fruits such as polewood, roaming large areas searching for clumps of their favorite foods. As recent as 1989, the reported Belizean population of Scarlet Macaws was a total of 24 birds. But in 1996, a new population of over 100 birds was "discovered" south of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Unfortunately, over most of its range, the Scarlet macaw is endangered, a victim of human greed - many have been taken as a commodity in the pet trade. KEY FACTS SIZE

Welcome to My Web Site! I'm Tina Usher, and all of my life I have been captivated by all types of birds. I am a small aviary just outside of Chicago and I have been breeding the large parrots since 1981. I specialize in Congo African Greys, Moluccan, Umbrella and Medium Sulphur Crested (Elenora) Cockatoos and Green Wing Macaws. My home raised, hand-fed babies are well adjusted, gentle and loving. My clients rave about how much larger and more outgoing their parrots are compared to other pet birds they see. I also provide in- your -home grooming and behavioral consultations. Seeing the need, I am currently developing care, training and behavior workshops to help bird owners mend and/or improve their relationships with their avian pals. I'm using my education, training, experience and love for our birds to teach people how to understand and cohabit happily with their pet parrots.

For those who are intimidated by the very large beak of the larger macaw species such as the scarlet, blue and gold, and green-winged macaws, you will find these medium-sized parrots can make great companions. The smallest of the mini-macaws is the Hahn's or Noble macaw. They are on average 12 inches in length. Many owners who have multiple species of macaws report that the Hahn's are the most adaptable, friendly, and trainable of the group.

The way we incubate: Different kinds of chickens are used for this purpose which include cochins, silkies and sebrights. Silkies incubate a little bit cooler which is great for all kinds of cockatoos. Sebrights are perfect for the eggs of the smaller amazons and conures because they are really tiny. Of course we have to watch those hens 3 times a day to make sure things are going fine. On the pipping day, we take the eggs to the hatcher where the humidity is at its highest. 2 days later a tiny baby bird is born. For the first 3 days of the baby's life, we just give them hydrating fluids every 2 hours. After that we feed them Kaytee formula until their weaning age.
