Introduction to the Macaw
By Len LaRiccia
Macaws originate from South America. The smallest of the full size macaw is the Red Fronted, which was thought to be extinct until 1986 when a flock of 600 where discovered. Macaws are amazing birds, with the largest, the Hyacinth Macaw, distinguished from other macaws by its beautiful cobalt blue coloring. Reaching 40" long. Macaws lay two eggs in an average clutch and it takes 23-30 days to hatch. Macaws mate for life and are devoted mates who will die defending each other. Incredibly, macaws can live up to 150 years, and are extremely intelligent, loyal and loving pets.
Veterinary care of the macaw is critical. The Macaw Wasting Syndrome (which is a virus) is deadly in this species. Signs include vomiting, passing whole seeds, and loss of weight. This is extremely serious as it leads to a long, suffering death and, unfortunately, this syndrome is quite prevalent in San Diego. The incubation period can take up to 6 months or more. Another common problem is Poloyoma Virus. Bird Crazy vaccinates for this virus which are 75-80% effective in preventing this ailment.

Welcome to Our Home
Hi, my name is Lisa and I'm married to Bill. We have a daughter, Victoria, one dog, a German Shepherd, Bella, and a handful of parrots as pets. One Amazon, Boo, one Senegal, Samantha and One Hyacinth Macaw, Merlin. We have a pretty big aviary where we have about 50 more birds. Before I started this business I had birds as pets for over 20 years. I also had and have dogs, cats, even a horse, but there's something so very special about parrots. They demand more from you and give you even more in return. It's hard to understand the joy of having a strong bond with a bird until you have experienced such a thing. Parrots are also more helpless as babies than any other pets I know. You must really know what you are doing when you separate the babies from the mothers and get into the hand feeding process, which is both long and time-consuming. It can take from 10 weeks or up to 10 months, depending on the bird you choose. You must have the right tools, and they can be pretty expensive. An incubator is a must have; young babies cannot regulate their body temperatures. All this is done, so you can get a wonderful pet who can bond with you and feel closer to you than other birds. We socialize with these small youngsters in the best way we know how, so the baby parrots are feeling completely at ease with us. When all this is done, it is your turn to continue the process.

RESPIRATORY DISEASES IN MACAWS Pulmonary Hypersensitivity Syndrome
by Linda Pesek DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Avian)
Providing a good environment as well as a good diet is essential in keeping your bird healthy. In addition to proper temperature, good ventilation is essential. Although good ventilation is necessary for any type of bird, it is especially critical for macaws. Blue and Gold macaws, as well as several other species of macaws, seem especially sensitive to airborne irritants. They may develop a progressive respiratory disease known as "pulmonary hypersensitivity syndrome" if housed in a poorly ventilated room, especially if kept with birds that produce a great deal of powder - cockatoos, cockatiels and African grey parrots. This powder is produced by specialized "powder down feathers" and is a white waxy substance composed of keratin. Powder down forms a water proof barrier for contour feathers. It is spread through the feathers when the bird grooms. The down is composed of very fine particulate matter which becomes airborne very easily and spreads via air currents and air ducts throughout the area. The powder down can also cause irritation to people with respiratory problems and allergies. (People with allergies may be able to tolerate these birds, but they should be aware of this before acquiring one of them).

    MACAWS - PERSONALITY PLUS!!
    by Bill and Sandy Harrison
Prospective purchasers of macaws often ask which species we believe make the best pets and which ones are more difficult to own. Macaws are near and dear to our hearts as we not only breed them, but also have a number of them as pets. In our experience, we have seen a noticable difference in personality among the various macaw species. But we have also found that all macaws MUST receive attention and love from their owners if they are to become good pets. Out of the 17 species of macaws, we are privileged to have 11 of them at our aviary. We have been able to watch them under the SAME controlled circumstances. This allows us to judge which birds we think make good pets, which are more forgiving and which species, while lovely, should not be *pushed* as a family pet. We do not have a lot of birds, in fact around 50 at the moment. For the most part, they came to us because they needed relocating. Some became mates/companions for birds that we had reared from babies. Some came because they were old, worn out breeders. Others were beloved pets in homes where circumstances changed. Some came because of death and some because they were feared. Whatever the reason...they came. Consequently, not all of these birds were reared by us. Since they came to us at different ages, we do have a cross section to some degree. Some are well into the 30's and pushing 40 years old. So while we do have a cross section of ages this is mitigated by the fact that they are all here, under similar living conditions, and receive the same attention, the same interaction with us and see us interacting with our flock in the same way.

US MEMBERS: Join and Save! EUROPE: AUSTRALIA: JAPAN: LAST UPDATE: 05-May-2004 Macaws are in serious trouble. These brilliant, long-tailed parrots of Neotropical forests are threatened both by forest clearing and by poaching for the pet trade, where they fetch thousands of dollars or die in transit. Poachers take the birds by cutting down their nesting trees for chicks and by lurking at clay licks, where macaws and parrots of as many as 17 different species congregate by the hundreds. Although increased ecotourism focused on watching macaws has helped reduce poaching, it may be causing its own problems by disturbing the birds. All of this is exacerbated by the fact that macaws require century-old trees to nest in and have a very slow reproductive rate. A population of 200 macaws may produce only 8 chicks a year.
