Macaws are definitely among the most colorful and strikingly beautiful birds of the parrot family. Because of their great beauty and engaging personalities, they are a favorite pet among bird lovers and have been kept for centuries.
They are very smart birds, Macaws have the greatest and most unique personalities of all birds and need lots of attention and toys to keep them busy. They are vigorous chewers and will chew on anything within reach, so if you keep them on a stand make sure nothing valuable is within reach! Macaws come from South and Central America and have been widely kept as pets since the beginning of the 20th century. In the United States, They have been kept by the Pueblo Indians since 1100 A.D. The Pueblos especially prized the Scarlet Macaw.

Pet macaws By Joanne Abramson from Raintree macaws. Easily availability. Six of the large macaws will be discussed in this article.

Pet Macaws
By Joanne Abramson from Raintree Macaws Easily distinguished from amazons and cockatoos by their bare facial patch and long pointed tail, the macaw family comprises one of the most extravagantly colored in the bird world. Provided they are given a healthy diet, allowed freedom and given lots of attention they will be a life long companion. It is because of this longevity that deciding on a pet macaw should not be taken lightly. Most captive bred birds are closed banded. Closed banding means the bird has had a bracelet-like steel or aluminum band (with a letter and number code stamped on it) put on its leg. This band's code tells where the bird was bred and has an unique number for that bird. The band is soldered shut and cannot be put on the bird after it is about two weeks old, depending on the species. Selection
Choosing your first macaw will be your biggest challenge. With so many beautifully colored birds vying for your attention it is hard to decide. In the end the decision should be based on your lifestyle, the bird's health and availability. Six of the large macaws will be discussed in this article. Species
Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna): Commonly kept in captivity and understandably popular the Blue and Golds are playful, fun loving birds. Their availability in captivity has erroneously lead to the belief that they are unremarkable. Too often they have been hybridized with other species. Perhaps the most commonly available large macaw. Their personality is ideal. They adapt easily to new surroundings. As with all the large macaws they are highly sociable and quickly become members of the family.

MACAWS Home Page: http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/macaws.html
Brief Instrument Description of the
Multicenter Airborne Coherent Atmospheric Wind Sensor (MACAWS) Platform Overview MACAWS is an airborne side-scanning Doppler laser radar (lidar) which measures two dimensional wind fields, vertical wind profiles, and aerosol backscatter from clear air and clouds. Range varies from 10-30 km depending on aerosol abundance and cloud attenuation. Upon exiting the aircraft, the lidar beam is completely eye-safe. MACAWS is developed and operated cooperatively by the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Instrument Description MACAWS consists of: a frequency-stable pulsed transverse-excited atmospheric pressure carbon dioxide laser emitting 0.5-1.0 J per pulse at 10.6 micron wavelength at a nominal pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of ~20 Hz; a coherent receiver employing a cryogenically-cooled HgCdTe detector; a 0.3 m off-axis paraboloidal telescope shared by the transmitter and receiver in a monostatic configuration; a ruggedized optical table and three-point support structure; a scanner using two counter-rotating germanium wedges to refract the transmitted beam in the desired direction; an inertial navigation system (INS) for frequent measurements of aircraft attitude and speed; data processing, display, and storage devices; and an Operations Control System (OCS) to coordinate all system functions.

PARROT RESEARCH STUDIES - GREAT-GREEN MACAW ( Ara ambigua
    Costa Rica Update 1999 - 2000
    # Nest sites
Extensive field searching and interviews with local residents revealed 41 confirmed nest sites over the seven years of the study. All confirmed nests were in natural cavities of large living trees. Of these, nests found in Dipterix panamensis accounted for 88% of confirmed nest sites. The most recent numbers provided show that of 29 checked nests, only 13 (45%) were active (Powell et al. 1999)
    # Nest fidelity
Data on nest fidelity is limited to 13 adults marked with radio-transmitters between 1996 and 1999 (renesting: y= 3, n= 10). Based on that data, it has been confirmed that breeding pairs do not generally occupy the same nest hole in consecutive years.
    # Nest productivity
Using the Mayfield method (Mayfield, 1961,1975), a statistically accepted analysis which allows one to calculate the probability of a nesting attempt succeeding without finding the nest at inception, the team was able to calculate the probability of nesting success for the great green macaw. With the monitoring of 18 successful nesting attempts involving 15 nest holes during five years and a total of 33 young, the productivity per successful nest equal 1.83 young, with a standard deviation of 0.514.
