The MACAWS program is no longer active, these pages are being maintained for informational use. Welcome to the MACAWS homepage! If you are unfamiliar with the concept of coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) to measure atmospheric winds and aerosols, then see our handy list of definitions to some key words and concepts. Then, come on back and enjoy the rest of this page!
What is MACAWS?
The M ulti-center A irborne C oherent A tmospheric W ind S ensor (MACAWS) is an airborne, pulsed, scanning, coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) that remotely senses the distribution of wind velocity and aerosol backscatter within three-dimensional volumes in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. MACAWS, presently configured to fly on the NASA DC-8 research aircraft , was developed jointly by the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups of NASA Global Hydrology and Climate Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Nearly all of the MACAWS hardware components were developed for previous atmospheric research programs. The re-use of these field-tested components has resulted in considerable cost savings to the Government. Interagency cooperation among the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups also ensures that research activities are both scientifically synergistic and cost-effective. For example, the MACAWS laser transmitter is that of the highly successful mobile ground-based Doppler lidar ("Windvan") developed by NOAA ETL and deployed for a number of experiments.

MACAWS
Macaws are some of the most intelligent and beautifully colored parrots. They are certainly the largest companion bird species. Although they are free - ranging in Mexico and Central and South America, most free - ranging species are considered threatened or endangered, and efforts to protect these birds have resulted in a ban on importation for pet purposes in the United States. High quality companion birds are available from breeders. Large macaws include Blue and Golds, Scarlets, Greenwings and Hyacinths; miniature macaws include Yellow - collars, Severes and Nobles.
What to Expect from Your Macaw
Macaws are commonly filling up shelters for unwanted birds.
Is Your Macaw a Male or a Female?
In most macaw species it is difficult to distinguish male from a female based on physical characteristics; therefore, endoscopy or laboratory methods must be used for sex determination in breeding facilities.

6. WILD MACAWS
Wild macaws. How to see macaws in the wild. Accounts of our travels to see macaws in South America. Readers are invited to submit their own accounts.
http://freespace.virgin.net/susan.armitage/macaws.htm
Many macaw lovers would like to see macaws in the wild but imagine that it's far beyond their means to do so. If you take a fancy tour it may well be. However if you go on your own or with a few friends, the cost will, in general, be halved. You can stay twice as long and not be rushed or pushed around. These tour companies make big profits! This website is about how and where to go, who will help and the likely costs. There are tourist industries in every country in South America. There are descriptions of our trips at the end of this page, life in South America is seldom boring. Having been on several journeys to South and Central America to see macaws, I have been forced to the sad conclusion that the only hope for these magnificent creatures in the wild is eco-tourism. You will find endless scientific material on the internet pontificating on various statistics but in the field in the end only money and population pressure counts. In the third world the only thing that will save the wild macaws is if they are perceived to have monetary value by the local people, ie tourist potential. The alternative is that their habitat will be destroyed and they will die or be captured for the pet trade. This is the reason for this webpage. Until you've seen hundreds of large macaws in flight you haven't seen anything. Be quick though, I feel despondent about how long it will be possible to see this incredible sight. Macaws all come from South and Central America and a few of the Caribbean islands.

MACAWS AS COMPANIONS
Part 1: Buying A Pet Macaw
By Joanne Abramson
Reprinted from The Pet Bird Report
Pick up any photographic parrot book and it is hard not to stop at a photo of a macaw. They are flamboyant, colorful, and captivating birds. Their personalities are legendary. Because of their great beauty and engaging personalities, they have been kept in captivity for centuries. In fact, in the United States, they were kept by the Pueblo Indians since 1100 A.D. where they prized the Scarlet Macaw. After months or years of seeing colorful macaws in picture and pet shops, perhaps you have decided to take the plunge and buy one. There are so many species of large macaws. Which one is right for you?
Selection
Choosing you first macaw will be your biggest challenge. With so many beautifully colored birds vying for your attention it can be difficult to decide. Talking with owners of macaws might help, but don't be surprised if they adore the species they have chosen. Each person is likely to try to convince you of his or her own macaws esteemed merits. Your final decision should be based on your lifestyle, the bird's health, and its availability. Cost is always a consideration but realize that if the bird has been raised by the breeder and comes with a health check from an avian veterinarian, the cost will be slightly higher. Over the last ten years the availability of domestic raised birds has finally provided tame, healthy birds for breeding and for pets.

Macaw-Parrots
Macaw-Parrots - Introduction
Macaw Parrots are the largest members in the parrot family. There are seventeen species of these birds that can be found in the wild nowadays. They are brightly colored, with large beaks and long tails. Most of the Macaw Parrots are big, loud and demanding.
Macaw-Parrots - Description
Harleys Perch Parrots lovers would like to see these birds in the wild. Macaw Parrots are very smart, large, colorful, loving and affectionate birds, but they do not make good pets. Although they are highly intelligent, at home they can be destructive and noisy. And, they like to chew; it is really their hobby. If not correctly handled, they can even be very aggressive. And especially these are not pets that are suited for children. The Macaw Parrots are usually difficult to handle at home. Their character changes, as they grow older. Usually there is only one member of the family who the bird loves. The bird treats all the rest of family and friends aggressively. What's more, these parrots are very rare and, thus, are difficult to house and feed properly.
Macaw-Parrots - Range in the Wild
Most Macaw Parrots live in the warm, Neotropical regions from Southern Mexico through Central America and down into Central South America. Different species will live in different locales within a country.

Parroty parts of the text are in orange if you aren't interested in the journey! According to Forshaw's "Parrots of the World" there are forty eight parrots in Venezuela, including six macaws. It seemed about time to visit the place. As usual it's hard to discover much about the whereabouts of any of them, although I did discover from the internet that there were Blue and Gold Macaws in the Orinoco delta.
We had intended this to be a tour for us poor people this year, however we were lured into a couple of rather expensive side trips which made a hole in the budget. In the sixties Venezuela boomed due to it's vast oil and mineral reserves. It was the third largest producer of oil in the world, the world's largest consumer was just across the way. Grandiose buildings were constructed and a vast new highway system laid out. However things have now deteriorated, much more in fact than I expected. The cities are neglected, the roads are potholed. We saw malnutrition, poverty and unemployment. An embittered population, the cup of first world consumerism dashed from their lips, blames government incompetance and corruption. There are areas in every Venezuelan city that are unsafe to visit. We took normal precautions (looking poor and scruffy and keeping clear of the dodgy areas,) nothing untoward happened to us. As elsewhere in South America, we also met lots of friendly people.
