    General Info Geography l Government l History l People Geography Macau is situated southeast of China, on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province. It lies 70 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong and 145 kilometers from Guangzhou. Topography Macau has a total area of approximately 21 square kilometers, consisting of a narrow peninsula of Macau, which is linked to the People's Republic of China at Portas do Cerco ("Border Gate"). The territory is also connected to the island of Taipa by two bridges, the old bridge "Governor Nobre de Carvalho" (2.6km) and the new bridge "Amizade" (4.4km), which in turn is joined to the island of Coloane by a 2.1km causeway. Climate The weather in the territory is moderately hot, with an average annual temperature of just over 20° C and a yearly mean variation between 6 to 25° C with high humidity in summer (April - September). Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999.     Macao is located on the Southeast coast of China to the west of the Pearl River Delta. Bordering on Guangdong Province, it locates 60km from Hong Kong and 145km from the city of Guangzhou. Local time is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
    Area
    Macao has been increasing in size as a result of the land reclamation that has taken place around its coastline. It covered only 10.28km2 in the 19th century, but now occupies 26.8km2, including the peninsula of Macao, and the two islands of Taipa and Coloane which are linked by a six-lane highway 2.20km long.
    Population
    In the second quarter of 2003, Macao's local population numbered 444,000 inhabitants. Population density is over 16,000/km2, and the northern part of the peninsula of Macao is regarded as one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
    Macao's population has undergone rapid demographic growth over the last two decades, increasing at an annual rate of around 4%. There is also an impressive flow of people in and out of the territory with an average 20,000 passengers entering Macao via the Outer Harbour ferry terminal each day while around 50,000 people cross the Border Gate Checkpoint at the border with mainland China. A total of 25 million annual people-flow are recorded.
    Macao is an open, varied city and this is reflected in its demographic breakdown. 52% of the total population are female. 20% of Macao residents are under 14 years of age, and 72.3% are aged between 15 and 64. 7.7% of the population are over 65 years old. Average life span for both sexes is over 78 years old, the longest in Asia after Japan.

      Economy - overview The economy is based largely on tourism (including gambling) and textile and fireworks manufacturing. Efforts to diversify have spawned other small industries - toys, artificial flowers, and electronics. The tourist sector has accounted for roughly 25% of GDP, and the clothing industry has provided about two-thirds of export earnings; the gambling industry probably represents over 40% of GDP. Macau depends on China for most of its food, fresh water, and energy imports. Japan and Hong Kong are the main suppliers of raw materials and capital goods.     Introduction

    Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999.
