I wish to personally welcome you to this web site. It has been created, with love, for you. When we first get diagnosed (or wonder if we should be diagnosed), I know too well how difficult it is to find information about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (aka CFIDS, M.E.), Lyme, and/or Fibromyalgia Syndrome. There are a myriad of sites that bring you the basics, and I try to present you those basics as well as information slightly beyond. At the moment, there is no cause nor cure. There are no magic bullets. This disease is so complex, no one drug will work. This is not a disease of just your muscles, your immune system, your sleep dysfunction, your hormones, your nutritional deficiencies, your NMH, or your gut; it is a cluster of symptoms that involve every system of your body. Treating it, therefore, involves testing and treating those deficiencies. The controversies surrounding that and the differences in our health contribute to our stress. My new job is to help us sort that all out. Hugs, Marilyn K

Lyme disease Alternative names Return to top Borreliosis Definition Return to top Lyme disease is an inflammatory disease characterized by a skin rash, joint inflammation, and flu-like symptoms, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted by the bite of a deer tick. See also tick removal Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Lyme disease was first described in the United States in the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut in 1975, but has now been reported in most parts of the United States. Most cases occur in the Northeast, upper Midwest, and along the Pacific coast. Mice and deer are the most commonly infected animals that serve as host to the tick. Most infections occur in the late spring, summer, and early fall. The disease can sometimes be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms may mimic other diseases. A characteristic red rash usually occurs at the site of the bite. However, the bite may go unnoticed. A few months to years after the bite, joint inflammation, neurological symptoms, and sometimes heart symptoms may occur.

Research on emerging infectious diseases Tuberculosis, Hepatitis C, Malaria, Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, lyme disease, Influenza, AIDS, and other emerging viral diseases.
http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/me/patientsguide/eidpg.htm
Emerging infectious diseases are commonly defined as those that have newly appeared in a population or have existed but are rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range. Recent examples include HIV/AIDS, Lyme disease and hepatitis C. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports research and scientific training to meet the challenges of emerging diseases. This document provides a brief overview of NIAID¹s emerging disease research programs.
Tuberculosis
Nearly 2 billion people, one-third of the world¹s population, are infected with the tuberculosis (TB) bacterium. This includes between 10 and 15 million people in the United States. TB is the world¹s leading cause of death from a single infectious organism, killing more adults each year than AIDS and malaria combined. The TB crisis is intensified by the emergence of disease caused by multidrug-resistant organisms. Infections caused by these organisms may result in an incurable form of the disease. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 50 million people worldwide may be infected with drug-resistant strains of TB. NIAID¹s TB research program encompasses studies of the epidemiology and natural history of TB, and basic and applied research to develop new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent TB. An NIAID-funded center at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, coordinates national and international basic and clinical research programs on TB. The center¹s primary goals are to develop new ways to measure the effectiveness of new drugs and to identify the immune responses that protect an individual from TB, information needed to evaluate candidate TB vaccines. Another NIAID-funded facility acquires and screens natural and synthetic compounds in a search for new TB antibiotics. NIAID also supports a number of facilities for the preclinical evaluation of TB drugs in mouse models of the disease and to provide tuberculosis reagents to qualified investigators.

Lyme Disease - General Information and FAQ
Lyme disease is an illness caused by a spirochete bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to animals and man through the bite of infected ticks. The disease is reported worldwide and throughout the United States. The states of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey account for the majority of cases in the United States. However, cases are reported from all geographic regions of the country. Different ticks are carriers in the different regions. Ixodes dammini (the deer tick) in the Northeast and midwest, Ixodes scapularis (the black-legged tick) in the South, Ixodes pacificus (the western black-legged tick) in the West and Amblyomma americanum (the lone star tick) found in several regions are all considered vectors. The is growing concern that Dermacentor variabilis (the American dog tick) may also be capable of transmitting the disease. Transmission by biting insects (flies, fleas, mosquitos) is speculated but appears to be quite rare. Not all ticks are infected. Infection rates in tick populations vary by tick species and geographic region from as few as two percent to 90 percent or more.

New Book Bull’s Eye – unraveling the medical mystery of Lyme disease
by Jonathan A. Edlow, M.D. Yale University Press, 2003 This book is aimed at the layman, however health professionals who are not familiar with the 'story' of Lyme Disease may also find it of value. It concentrates almost entirely on American aspects but two chapters (out of a total of 26) are devoted to European work. The first of these (Chapter 7) deals with some of the early history from 1909-1948. The second (Chapter 8) brings the story as far as the 1950s. No mention is made of work conducted in Europe since then, though a few findings are cited in relation to specific topics in other chapters. It will be of particular interest to those interested in the emergence of the disease, and the account of the underlying science and the interaction of the various personalities involved in America from 1975 onwards make for an interesting and informative read.

Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi)
Borrelia burgdorferi FA stain (CDC) Lyme disease was first recognized in the United States in 1975 by Dr. Allen Steere, following a mysterious outbreak of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis near the community of Lyme, Connecticut. The rural location of the Lyme outbreak and the onset of illness during summer and early fall suggested that the transmission of the disease was by an arthropod vector. In 1982, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease was discovered by Willy Burgdorfer who isolated spirochetes belonging to the genus Borrelia from the mid-guts of Ixodes ticks. He showed that these spirochetes reacted with immune serum from patients that had been diagnosed with Lyme disease. Consequently, the etiologic agent was given the name Borrelia burgdorferi Since then, reports of Lyme disease have increased dramatically to the point that the disease has become an important public health problem in some areas of the United States. Today Lyme disease is the most prevalent tick-borne illness in the US. Lyme disease has been reported in 47 states and on four different continents. In 1996, there were 16,455 new cases reported in the U.S. The number dropped in 1997(see table below), but in 1998 there were 16,801 cases, and in 1999 there were 16,273 new cases reported to the CDC. Biology of Borrelia burgdorferi Borrelia burgdorferi , like the human pathogen Treponema pallidum , is a spirochete . Spirochetes are a group of phylogenetically-distinct procaryotes that have a unique mode of motility by means of axial filaments (endoflagella). Spirochetes are widespread in viscous environments and they are found in the intestinal tracts of animals and the oral cavity of humans. The spirochetes have a unique cell surface which accompanies their unique type of motility. The endoflagella are contained within the periplasmic space between a rigid peptidoglycan helix and a multi-layer, flexible outer membrane sheath. When the filaments rotate within this space, the spirochetes move in cork-screw fashion. This mode of motility in spirochetes is thought to be an adaptation to viscous environments such as aquatic sediments and the intestinal tracts of animals. For pathogens, this allows the spirochetes to hide their flagella, which are normally antigenic, from the host immune defenses.

Trawling the Web
Having found I was suffering from Lyme disease in 1997 I spent several hours trawling the web for as much information as I could find on the disease. I thought it might be useful to put a site together that linked all the most useful information that I have found. I have also been lucky enough to find some information specifically aimed at the UK, kindly provided by John Adams, Senior Technical Officer at Arun District Council and Dr.David Hagen who is a consultant in public health for the area. I suspect that for the moment this site will remain the only Internet resource with information on Lyme disease relating to the UK. I'll keep tabs on this and update the site with any other links as I come across them. Please email me with any additions. I hope this will prove useful for anyone interested in the disease, especially in the UK or Europe. There would appear to be little information online that does not relate purely to the USA, where Lyme is much more widespread and it must be stated, much more in the public mind. There is a brilliant newsgroup for Lyme patients (and anyone interested in the subject) you will need to subscribe to:
