What Causes Lupus? Lupus is a disease in which the immune system misbehaves. Our immune system is an army of different types of cells that protect us against attack (infection) by harmful germs (pathogens). Our immune cells are "killing machines" and therefore must be able to tell the difference between a germ cell and our own cells (imagine going to war against an army wearing the same uniform as your own soldiers - you'd inevitably kill soldiers on your own side by accident!). Telling the difference between our own cells and germ cells is often described as recognition of "self" and "non-self."      Lupus is an autoimmune disease. This means that the immune system can no longer tell the difference between self and non-self and tries to attack some of our own cells.
