LUPUS IN CHILDREN The disease course of lupus may not be different for children, but plenty of other issues arise when lupus affects the younger members of the family. OSTEOPOROSIS IN YOUNG WOMEN WITH LUPUS If you take steroids to help manage your lupus, you need to know about osteoporosis—it's not just an older woman's disease. LUPUS IN MEN Nearly 90 percent of the people with lupus are women, so how do men cope with having this chronic illness, what keeps them going, and what advice do they want to share?

    What Causes Lupus?
Lupus is a disease in which the immune system misbehaves. Our immune system is an army of different types of cells that protect us against attack (infection) by harmful germs (pathogens). Our immune cells are "killing machines" and therefore must be able to tell the difference between a germ cell and our own cells (imagine going to war against an army wearing the same uniform as your own soldiers - you'd inevitably kill soldiers on your own side by accident!). Telling the difference between our own cells and germ cells is often described as recognition of "self" and "non-self."
Lupus is an autoimmune disease. This means that the immune system can no longer tell the difference between self and non-self and tries to attack some of our own cells. This also means that there's nothing a person with lupus has done to cause the condition, and it can't be caught from someone else.

A whole variety of things seem to go wrong in the immune system of lupus patients which contribute to the systemic nature of the disease.

In autoimmune diseases there are antibodies directed at certain molecules (antigens) found naturally in the body. In SLE there are many possible antigens, but the most common are

Whether you are interested in participating in a lupus study or finding out more about lupus, we hope you find our website useful! What is Lupus and why is it important to research? Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting over 1 million Americans. This autoimmune disease attacks the body's own tissues and organs. Just 25 years ago only 50% of patients diagnosed with systemic lupus survived 5 years! Now more than 95% survive 5 years after diagnosis! Research is rapidly generating results to enhance clinical care. To find out more about Lupus, check out our Lupus Info and Lupus FAQ pages.

    Participating in Lupus Clinical Trials
Lupus is an autoimmune disease. The immune system normally attacks foreign substances in the body. However, with people who have lupus, the immune system treats body tissues and organs as invaders. The three types of lupus are: discoid lupus erythematosus , which affects the skin; systemic lupus erythematosus , which attacks the connective tissue between organs and the organs themselves; and drug-induced lupus , where side-effects from medication mimic lupus.
Almost 1.5 million Americans have some form of lupus. At its most severe, lupus can be life-threatening and damage joints, the brain, lungs, the heart and other internal organs. Lupus researchers are looking for the root cause of lupus, and lupus clinical trials investigate new treatment options and lupus medications. With a better understanding of the causes, lupus research can proceed to the development of effective treatments for this condition.
    The Value of Lupus Research
Lupus clinical trials are necessary to develop new lupus medications and treatment options. Knowing that certain hormone levels are lower in lupus sufferers that other groups, hormone therapy is being pursued as a possible lupus treatment. Other clinical trials are investigating the reasons for the faulty immune system that results in lupus, in the hope of one day developing a lupus treatment that can cure the disease at its source.
Why Participate in a Lupus Clinical Trial?

Lung transplants increase survival in cystic fibrosis
People with cystic fibrosis who receive double lung transplants to treat their disease have an average survival rate of 5.7 years after transplant compared to individuals who do not receive transplants, according to a recent study. Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis noted that although individuals with cystic fibrosis who had lung transplantation initially had a high risk of dying, that risk dropped over time, and the increased years of survival made the operation worthwhile. Only about 1,000 lung transplants are performed in the United States each year, and of those only 150, or 15%, are for people with cystic fibrosis.
