Swahili the National Language of Kenya
Swahili or Kiswahili has become the most extended indigenous language in Africa, with some 50 million speakers. Currently it is the official and national language in Tanzania. In Kenya and Uganda it is the national language, since official communications and administration use English. Thanks to the relationships of the East African countries with the neighboring countries, Swahili is also spoken in some regions of Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia and South Africa. The name of this language has its origin in sâhils-awâhil Dating the origins of Swahili is not an easy task. It seems clear that the language was spoken at the coast during the 13th century. Some authors propose a much more ancient origin: in his work "Journey through the Erithraean Sea", a greek trader named Diogene who visited the East African coast in the year 110 A.D. told that the arab traders who regularly sailed the coast talked to the natives in their local language, which could represent the first historical reference to Swahili.

    Population count
    Kenya's Population
Kenya's population agglomerates tribes, cultures, religions and languages. According to what we know today, the country's human map was started 6,000 years ago, when the native inhabitants of this land were first invaded by the northern Nilotic and Cushite peoples. Then came the Bantus, followed by the Arabs, Asians, Europeans... The skin colors of the Kenyans cover all the range of clears and darks.
The nearly 30 million Kenyans are distributed in a very uneven way throughout the country, given that the north and northeast regions are arid and little hospitable for human settling. In this regions, population density hardly reaches 2 inhabitants per sq km, whereas in the rich and fertile western the rate rises to 120 inhabitants per sq km. In the Rift Valley, density varies among areas, with an average around 13 inhabitants per sq km.

Modernizing indigenous crops - cropping images of indigenous people: an interdisciplinary evaluation study in late 20 th -century Machakos (East Kenya) Nurit Bird-David (anthropologist, University of Haifa, Israel) and Winifred Karugu (agricultural economist, Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenya A draft: please do not cite without authors permission Introduction We present a study conducted within an international program that promotes research for and with African countries, combining theoretical and practical contributions, and establishing academic networks. Our particular project addressed a problematic attempt to re-introduce indigenous food-crops in the drought-prone semi-arid and arid areas of Machakos (East Kenya). Specifically, we sought to understand why the Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program (SMIP) that had tried to promote the cultivation of indigenous sorghum failed, and local people continue to grow maize although it keeps failing in their harsh environment and brings them recurrently to the brink of famine. We approached this question by casting our theoretical and empirical net as wide as possible, using time and other resources that policy makers and implementers rarely have at their disposal. We questioned received assumptions underlying SMIP, including the informing images of Third World rural women , subsistence farmers , and indigenous crops and people, and not least the gap between such stereotyped representations and the realities of late 20 th -century rural Machakos. We argue in this paper that sweeping generalizations about rural African people, their indigenous knowledge, and their gendered labor and households, misled the program, deflecting it from directions in which it could and can in the future be effective. We illustrate the advantages of paying attention to cultural differences, not least between donors and recipients , and the fruit of inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue.

Kenya is still the primary focus of all adventure travel in Africa. It is one of the finestand undoubtedly the most famoussafari destination in the world. Safari , however, is by no means the only reason to visit Kenya, for the attractions of its rich culture and diverse environments are considerable.
Kenya is situated right along the equator, on the eastern coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is on the southeast, and to the east lies Somalia. Ethiopia is to the north, the Sudan to the northwest, and Uganda directly to the west. The southwestern border of the country is marked by Lake Victoria, and southward lies Tanzania. Kenya's geography is marvelously varied. While much of northeastern Kenya is a flat, bush-covered plain, the remainder of the country encompasses pristine beaches, scenic highlands and lake regions, the Great Rift Valley, and the magnificent Mount Kenya.
Although Kenya's varied environments experience a wide variety of climate conditions, the temperature remains comfortably warm year-round. Much of Kenya experiences heavy rainfall from March through May and, to a lesser extent, from October through December. The best time for most

PEOPLE Kenya has a very diverse population that includes most major language groups of Africa. Traditional pastoralists, rural farmers, Muslims, and urban residents of Nairobi and other cities contribute to the cosmopolitan culture. The standard of living in major cities, once relatively high compared to much of Sub-Saharan Africa, has been declining in recent years. Most city workers retain links with their rural, extended families and leave the city periodically to help work on the family farm. About 75% of the work force is engaged in agriculture, mainly as subsistence farmers. The national motto of Kenya is harambee , meaning "pull together." In that spirit, volunteers in hundreds of communities build schools, clinics, and other facilities each year and collect funds to send students abroad. The five state universities enroll about 38,000 students, representing some 25% of the Kenyan students who qualify for admission. There are four private universities.

    KENYAN POLITICAL FACTS
    Kenya Background:
Founding president and liberation struggle icon Jomo KENYATTA led Kenya from independence until his death in 1978, when current President Daniel Toroitich arap MOI took power in a constitutional succession. The country was a de facto one-party state from 1969 until 1982 when the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) made itself the sole legal party in Kenya. MOI acceded to internal and external pressure for political liberalization in late 1991. The ethnically fractured opposition failed to dislodge KANU from power in elections in 1992 and 1997, which were marred by violence and fraud, but are viewed as having generally reflected the will of the Kenyan people. The country faces a period of political uncertainty because MOI is constitutionally required to step down at the next election that has to be held by early 2003.

The country, which lies astride the equator, is made up of several geographical regions. The first is a narrow, coastal strip that is low lying except for the Taita Hills in the south. The second, an inland region of bush-covered plains, constitutes most of the country's land area. In the northwest, straddling Lake Turkana and the Kulal Mts., are high-lying scrublands. In the southwest are the fertile grasslands and forests of the Kenya highlands. In the west is the Great Rift Valley, an irregular depression that cuts through W Kenya from north to south in two branches. It is also the location of some of the country's highest mountains, including Mt. Kenya (17,058 ft/5,199 m). Kenya's main rivers are the Tana and the Athi. In addition to the capital, other important cities include Mombasa (the chief port)

    Languages: living on borrowed time
    Culture/indigenous people
By Matthias Muindi Out of Kenya’s 42 indigenous languages, 16 of them have either become extinct or are seriously endangered, says a recent UNESCO report. This is the highest number in eastern Africa where four countries – Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, and Ethiopia – are experiencing what the report termed “high language mortality.” AFRICANEWS brings the story of one person whose community is extinct. When asked about his ethnicity, 10-year-old Jeff Machogu has no reservations. “I’m a Luo,” he says with a chuckle. His father, Robert Oduol, one of Kenya’s top journalists, just shakes his head in amazement as Jeff’s younger brother, Roy Odhiambo, screams in the background, “I’m also a Luo.” The two boys are firmly convinced that their family is Luo – Kenya’s second-largest ethnic group – because they speak the language, observe the community’s customs, and have a rural home near Lake Victoria, which is the heartland of the Luo. However, the boys’ father knows otherwise. “My family,” he told AFRICANEWS, “is of Bantu origin, having descended from the Suba ethnic group, a Bantu community that fled to Kenya and Tanzania fearing political persecution in Uganda in the 16th century. Yet most people think we’re Luo.” Hence, he points out, his children are Bantus.
