In Wednesday night's final two heats Wilczak will be looking for someway to crack the top three and become the first American singles slider to win an Olympic medal.
"It means a great deal," she said. "He's supported me for the past 10 years."
Until this season Tom Wilczak hadn't missed an event his daughter had competed in on North American soil. Now it's hard for him to stand up for long periods and last week doctors drained two-and-a-half gallons of fluid from his body.
USA Luge and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee have arranged to have a private jet on hand in case a liver donor is found and Tom Wilczak needs to be hurried back to his Chicago surgeons.
Almost daily, Becky Wilczak calls her father to check on his health. When He and Delle Wilczak, Becky's mother and Tom's wife, are out, the 21-year-old calls their friends looking for them, just making sure.
"He was the dad that took her out of school to play hooky and to the baseball games," Delle Wilczak said.

Photographing Olympic Sports
by New York Institute of Photography
In fact, one of the joys (and frustrations for us old-timers) on a slope is to watch a wolf pack of fearless four-year-olds schuss by and spray snow in our faces. What about the bobsledding? We doubt that you see much of it around your home town. So we don't cover it in this article. The same with luge. In fact, we've come to the conclusion that the luge is probably the silliest sport ever devised: Grown men and now women going 90 mph feet-first on a sled. Come on! One tidbit about the luge, however, that raises it somewhat in our estimation: In 1905, when Einstein postulated his Special Theory of Relativity in which he performed a "mind experiment" imagining what would happen if he could ride on a beam of light (that is, travel at a speed of nearly 670 million mph) the fastest speed attained by man on earth up to that time was a little over 90 mph, and it was on a luge! In any event, let's concentrate on how to photograph the winter sports you're more likely to find in your home area.

Photo: CMH With its downhill, ski jumping, bumps, and aerial competitions, the Winter Olympics are as much an exhibition of human bravery as they are an exhibition of athleticism. And, sledding events such as luge, with athletes who slide down gutters of ice at five G's and speeds over 90 miles per hour, are certainly among the most exciting to watch, never mind participate in. But, on January 26 and 27, everyday Vermonters got a taste of Olympic adrenaline as they donned their brain buckets and pointed their sleds downhill on a simulated luge track at Smuggler's Notch Resort. The day started with exhibitions of the sport by members of USA Luge. Then, the mere mortals climbed to the top of the track for time trials and a race. Sled racing is one of the oldest winter sports with documented appearances in Norway as early as 1480. The first international race was held in 1883 and, in 1964, it was inaugurated as an Olympic sport at the IX Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Now, the United States boasts two artificially refrigerated tracks in the United States: one at Lake Placid, New York and the track in Park City, Utah, that was recently constructed for this month's Olympic Games.

Morris News Service PARK CITY, Utah Michigan's Mark Grimmette and California's Brian Martin were less than a blink of an eye away from luge gold Friday in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Grimmette and Martin, the bronze medalists at the 1998 Games at Nagano, took the silver medal in men's doubles, equaling the U.S.'s 2-3 finish at Nagano. The U.S.'s Chris Thorpe and Clay Ives took bronze. Thorpe and Brian Sheer won silver at Nagano. The two medals helped make history. They pushed the climbing U.S. total to 13, which equals the most Americans have won at a Winter Olympics. Grimmette and Martin had gold clearly in sight with only one team left on the run. They were .004 ahead of their U.S. teammates.

The luge is a type of small sled on which one or two persons, lying face up, slide feet first down snowy hillsides or down steeply banked, curving, iced chutes similar to those used in bobsledding. Shifting weight, pulling straps attached to the runners, or using the feet accomplishes steering.

The first international race took place in 1883 with 21 competitors from seven nations, including the United States. The race was organized by hotels in the Swiss spa of Davos and took place over the 4-kilometer road from St. Wolfgang to Klosters. With the development of a more flexible sled came the "kunstbahn," or artificial track, which provided luge enthusiasts with a more challenging course. The first World Championships in the sport were held in 1955 in Oslo, Norway, with 52 competitors from eight nations. Two years later the lugers broke away from the FIBT, the bobsled and toboggan federation, to form their own Federation Internationale de Luge de Course (FIL). In 1961 at the International Olympic Committee meetings in Athens, three luge events men's singles, doubles and women's singles were added to the 1964 Olympic program.

This posting is to warn all streetlugers in the Calgary area that use Hwy 66, west of Bragg Creek. I received a call earlier this week from a unfortunate soul who became a victim of the new tax grab. The park wardens issued him a $450.00 stunting ticket, and confiscated his luge. Be very careful and be aware of the new fines. I'll try and follow-up with the results of his court appearance.

30-Second History
  • Luge (French for "sled") is one of the oldest winter sports and may have even started as early as 800 AD. Lugeing, or sled racing, began in Switzerland and European winter resorts, much like the formation of both bobsled and skeleton, which also use a downhill ice track. Luge is relatively new to the Olympic Games, having only been added in 1964 as a replacement for skeleton. A growing interest in luge started in the United States in 1979 with the construction of a refrigerated luge course in Lake Placid, N.Y., and the formation of USA Luge.
Timeline
The first recorded international sled contest. The International Sled Sport Federation was founded. The International Sled Sport Federation, renamed the International Luge Federation (FIL), joined the International Bobsled Federation, which governed all the ice-track sports until 1957. At a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), luge replaced skeleton as an Olympic sport. Skeleton was not added to the Olympic schedule again until 2002. The International Luge Federation separated from the International Bobsled Federation and became an independent entity. FIL joined the IOC the same year.
