LAKE PLACID, N.Y.
- USA Luge and the International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) have agreed to an exclusive agreement to assist each other in promoting both ice luge and street luge. The agreement that runs through 2004, allows the two organizations to work together in the organization, promotion, production, and broadcast of special events for both organizations, while at the same time seeking to obtain joint sponsorships and recruit new athletes.
"This is extremely exciting for USA Luge," said USA Luge Marketing Director, Gordy Sheer. "By working with the IGSA, we have opened the door to a whole new audience for the Olympic sport of luge. I believe the world of street luge will reap the same benefits and that this is a win-win for both associations."

Home Winter Sports Request a Link The luge and skeleton are crazy sports. The best way to succeed and go the fastest is to really know the course and somehow overcome your fear to relax your body and flow with the curves. Your luge is extremely sensitive to the variations and fluctuations of your body so as you become scared and tense up your body you'll cause havoc on the breaks and the runners. Plus, the whole time you're on your back staring up at the sky while you careen down a course at 80 miles an hour. Intrigued? Take a look at some of these websites which will explain these wonderful adrenaline pumping sport in greater detail.

The luge champ shows his Bavarian spirit. Five minutes on the luge track at Salt Lake City, Utah separate Georg Hackl from Olympic immortality. When the three-time Olympic gold medaller and sports legend plants his nail-studded gloves in the ice of the world's fastest track, Hackl will be readying himself for the ride of his life. Precision is all: timing, sled weight and design (Hackl, who trained as a metal worker, builds his own), uniform aerodynamics, temperature of track, air and even equipment, must be calibrated to three decimal places. Once launched, the racer makes minute but imperative calculations and adjustments while tearing down a deadly 1,335-meter curve-laden tube of ice at 90 miles per hour. "The Olympics are a different kettle of fish," says Hackl. "The track at Salt Lake City has a different character from all the others that we've ridden on this year. It is tailor-made for someone like Armin Zöggeler," Hackl says, referring to the world champion from northern Italy and shifting the weight of expectation to his rival. "Every athlete has difficulties with the second curve in the track. Only Zöggeler can handle [it] like a dream." But Hackl would not be Hackl if he did not have a reserve of strength ready for the high point of the season. The pressures are astronomical: if Hackl takes the gold this year, he will become the first athlete ever to win four consecutive gold medals at the Winter Games - in any sport. It's a good thing Hackl is known for cool composure.

Origins

Although credit for the development of competitive sliding is traditionally given to the alpine countries of Europe, the sport wa a popular pastime with the Mohawks of Kahnawake in Quebec. The word 'toboggan' is a North American Indian name given to the sleds used to transport supplies between camps in the winter.
The first official luge competition occurred in 1883. Competitors from Australia, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland started on a 4-km road betwwen Davos and Klosters. Australian student Georg Roberston and Swiss mailman Peter Minsch tied for the win with a time of 9 minutes and 15 seconds, for an average speed of 26km/h.
The Sport
Three events are on the Olympic program: women's single luge, men's single luge, and double luge, which has been a mixed event since the 1992 Games in Albertville, although no mixed team has ever competed at the Games.
The individuals or teams race down the course against the clock. They make four runs in singles and two runs in doubles, and the lowest total time (measured to a thousand of a second) determines the winner. Lighter weight competitors may use a regulated amount of ballast to raise the total weight. The luge course is between 1000m and 1500m long with an average gradient between 8 and 15 per cent. The sled must have two single runners and weigh no more than 23kg without the rider in singles, and 27kg without the rider in doubles. With the construction of refrigerated tracks and aerodynamic sleds, lugers now hurtle down the track at speeds of up to 140km/h.

Winter Olympic Sports Luge About Luge is a game in which one or two competitors in a wooden sled race a 1,000m ice course against time. As the steeply sloped course has many curves, the competitors try to complete the race without losing speed on the turns. Luge is one of the most popular Winter Olympic Sports because sleds usually run faster than 100Km/hr and compete against 1/1,000 second time difference. Artificial courses may accommodate four runs of singles and two runs of doubles, whereas natural courses may hold up to three runs of singles. The four times are added, and the fastest total time determines the winner.
