WINTER OLYMPICS LUGE
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1964 LUGE The first World Championships occurred on an artificial track in Oslo in 1955. Two years later, the International Luge Federation (FIL) was founded in Davos and remains the governing body of luge today. Luge made its Olympic debut in Innsbruck at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games with three events - men's, women's and doubles. These three events have been a part of every Olympics since 1964. Through the 1992 Olympics, the doubles event was known as men's doubles. After Albertville, the International Luge Federation (FIL) changed doubles to a mixed-gender competition. Since the ruling has been made, however, no mixed-gender teams have appeared in the Olympics. Of the 99 medals that have been awarded since 1964, 95 of them have gone to athletes from Germany, Austria, Italy or the former Soviet Union. The only four exceptions occurred when the United States won the silver and bronze medal in the doubles competition at the 1998 Nagano Games and again at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. This spectacular sport was dominated by East Germans from 1964 - 1988, during which time they won an incredible 15 of 21 gold medals on offer. A German by the name of Georg Hackl, who used to race for the former West Germany, is the undisputed king of luge and he has won the gold medal at the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Olympic Games on top of his 2 silver medals in the 1988 and 2002 Games. He is the only Olympic athlete in history to medal in five Olympic Games.

30-Second Guide to Luge Along with bobsled and skeleton, luge is one of three Winter Olympic sports that uses the icy, winding, downhill course artificially constructed for each Games. Luge athletes, or sliders, lie on a sled and steer down the course feet first, often crossing the finish line in less than a minute. Athletes compete in men's and women's singles and doubles contests. It is a timed sport, and participants race for the best time. The team with the fastest combined time wins. Did You Know?
  • The word "luge" is French for sled or toboggan. Luge athletes can reach speeds of up to 90 mph while racing down the luge course yet there are no brakes on a sled. Luge is the most precise of the Winter Olympic sliding events. Its races are clocked to 1/1000th of a second.

Winter Sports of the Olympics
The 2010 Olympic winter sports competitions are to be held in Supernatural B.C.. For recreation and sports there is no better place than British Columbia. With our towering mountains carved by glacier fed rivers we have it all for world class winter sports. Olympic sports winter competitions include: Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Curling, Ice Hockey, Luge, Skating, Skeleton, Skiing, Snowboarding.
Biathlon
The word biathlon stems from the Greek word for two contests. In this case cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship which makes it one of the most practical winter sports. Rock paintings found in Norway depict bow hunters on wood skis and date back to about 3000 B.C. It was formally introduced as an Olympic sports winter event in 1960 though it had made many demonstration appearances since the first Winter Sports Olympics in France. See the history of the Olympics
The Winter Sport of Bobsledding
There are three events in Olympic Bobsledding: two-man, four-man and two-woman. Sleds that look similar to the modern day bobsled have been raced for more than 200 years. Some historians say the sport started in Switzerland in the late 1800s when someone put runners on a tobbagan to get more spead. Early racerswould bob back and forth in an effort to get more speed. It failed to increase the speed but the name stuck. Probably the most famous bobsled team of all was the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team. On January 5, 1898 the organized competition was held with five-passenger sleds. Two of the passengers had to be women. The winter sport became an Olympic sport when it was included in the first Winter Olympics at Chamonix, France, in 1924.

Venue: Luge events will take place at a track called "Spiral," the first artificial ice track in Asia, which is located in the foothills of Mount Iizuna in the Asakawa district in the northern part of Nagano City. The 1,700-meter track has an elevation of 113 meters and encompasses 15 curves. Spiral is unique because it has two uphill sections that make the track more demanding for lugers and bobsled teams. 1994 Golds: Men's singles (Germany's Georg Hackl, 3:21:571); men's doubles (Italy's Wilfred Huber and Kurt Brugger, 1:36.720); women (Italy's, Gerda Weissensteiner, 3:15.517). Critical Moment: A bad start can mean defeat in luge, where victory can be determined by a thousandth of a second. KRT How It Works: KRT Nuts and Bolts: Lugers steer by pressing their calves against the outside of the front runners of the sled. A heavier load provides greater acceleration; in the doubles competition, the heavier of the two racers lies in front.

Luge
section All for One, and Luge for All By Amy Shipley Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, February 13, 1998; Page C6 Patrick Singleton, from Bermuda, is a product of luge federation's worldwide effort to grow its sport. (By Mark Baker/Reuters) He got to talking about his traveling companions. He is the only athlete at the Olympics from Bermuda, yet he is a member of one of the largest and closest-knit luge teams in the world, a team comprised of athletes representing different nations who have a stronger identity together than alone. Singleton's teammates hail from Greece, New Zealand, Somalia, India, South Korea, Taiwan and sometimes another nation or two. While they are opponents here, competing for different nations, most of their luge lives are spent together as part of a traveling troupe, eating, training and sleeping in hostels or dormitories. For 10 years, the Federation Internationale de Luge de Course (FIL) has assembled these athletes from far-flung locales, providing funding, transportation and a three-person coaching staff headed by Austrian Guenther Lemmerer. The idea is to bring more athletes into this dizzying and dangerous sport, traditionally practiced in Europe and dominated by Germans, Austrians and Italians.

History
Both the luge and the skeleton are similar to toboggans. Despite its name, the skeleton is almost twice as heavy as the luge, nearly 100 pounds for a singles sled compared to just over 50 pounds for a singles luge. In luge, the slider goes down the run feet first, steering with the legs and shoulders. In skeleton, the slider goes down head first and steers mainly by dragging the feet. Luge competition entered the Olympics in 1964. There is no women's doubles competition, but women have been allowed to enter the men's doubles event since 1992, although none have done so. Skeleton was on the Winter Olympic program at St. Moritz, Switzerland, in 1928 and 1948. St. Moritz is the home of the famous Cresta Run, where competitive tobogganing and bobsledding were born. After a long hiatus, skeleton returned to the Olympic program in 2002, with competition for both men and women.
