The History of the Olympics Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games
The Nemean Games
The Isthmian Games
The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.

You are part of a team of past medalists in your sport selected from a variety of countries to report to the Olympic Committee. You love your sport and do not want your sport dropped from the Olympics! As a team member, you have a unique role. After members gather information and statistics, your team will prepare a multimedia presentation on the history, statistics, and the future of your specific sport for the Olympic Committee. Task: Your team needs to convince the Olympic Committee that your sport, along with the Olympics in general, has a rich history. Using a spreadsheet and graphs, demonstrate that your sport has many participants (both male and female) from a variety of countries.

WINTER OLYMPICS LUGE
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1964 LUGE The first World Championships occurred on an artificial track in Oslo in 1955. Two years later, the International Luge Federation (FIL) was founded in Davos and remains the governing body of luge today. Luge made its Olympic debut in Innsbruck at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games with three events - men's, women's and doubles. These three events have been a part of every Olympics since 1964. Through the 1992 Olympics, the doubles event was known as men's doubles. After Albertville, the International Luge Federation (FIL) changed doubles to a mixed-gender competition. Since the ruling has been made, however, no mixed-gender teams have appeared in the Olympics. Of the 99 medals that have been awarded since 1964, 95 of them have gone to athletes from Germany, Austria, Italy or the former Soviet Union. The only four exceptions occurred when the United States won the silver and bronze medal in the doubles competition at the 1998 Nagano Games and again at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. This spectacular sport was dominated by East Germans from 1964 - 1988, during which time they won an incredible 15 of 21 gold medals on offer. A German by the name of Georg Hackl, who used to race for the former West Germany, is the undisputed king of luge and he has won the gold medal at the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Olympic Games on top of his 2 silver medals in the 1988 and 2002 Games. He is the only Olympic athlete in history to medal in five Olympic Games.

With the first Olympic Winter Games an enormous success, it was no surprise that the St. Moritz Games attracted an 84 percent increase in the number of participants including a 100% increase of female athletes. The Games started poorly due to extremely mild temperatures caused by the "fohn", the warm wind that sweeps the Swiss mountains from the south. The 1928 Winter Games in St. Moritz marked the first time Germany was allowed to participate in any Olympic competition after World War I; the Soviet Union was still notably absent. The Germans won a disappointing one bronze medal. Bobsledding was in the news at the 1928 Games. A new event, the skeleton sled, was upgraded from a demonstration sport and added to the program. In addition, teams in the four-man bobsled event had an option to include a fifth member. They all took up that option.

musical scores and create a kind of ice ballet. The four Olympic Figure Skating events include the Ladies Singles, the Men's Singles, Pairs or Doubles, and Ice Dancing. Singles and Doubles have two distinct forums which are the Short Program and Free Skating. The Short Program is designed to demonstrate a specific set of skating talents . During Free Skating competition, the Olympic skaters perform to music and are allowed to create a more freeform routine. Ice Dancing provides a sequenced dance on ice that is similar to ballroom dancing performed by a pair of skaters. Olympic Figure skating is an event that draws a large audience from around the world. There are six types of Alpine Skiing events at the Olympic Winter Games. These Alpine Skiing events are Downhill Racing, Slalom, the Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom, and Alpine Combination. Downhill Racing is the fastest and most exciting event featured at the Winter Olympic Games. The Slalom, the Giant Slalom, and Super Giant Slalom requires skiers to maneuver skillfully and through a series of gates (poles with flags). These skiing events are the most traditional competitions of the Winter Olympic games.
