    Outline of History
    Early History to 1500
Africa has the longest human history of any continent. African hominids date from at least 4 million years ago; agriculture, brought from SW Asia, appears to date from the 6th or 5th millennium B.C. Africa's first great civilization began in Egypt in 3400 B.C. ; other ancient centers were Kush and Aksum. Phoenicians established Carthage in the 9th cent. B.C. and probably explored the northwestern coast as far as the Canary Islands by the 1st cent. B.C. Romans conquered Carthage in 146 B.C. and controlled N Africa until the 4th cent. A.D. Arabs began their conquest in the 7th cent. and, except in Ethiopia, Muslim traders extended the religion of Islam across N Africa and S across the Sahara into the great medieval kingdoms of the W Sudan. The earliest of these kingdoms, which drew their wealth and power from the control of a lucrative trans-Saharan trade in gold, salt, and slaves, was ancient Ghana, already thriving when first recorded by Arabs in the 8th cent. In the 13th cent. Ghana was conquered and incorporated into the kingdom of ancient Mali, famous for its gold and its wealthy capital of Timbuktu. In the late 15th cent. Mali was eclipsed by the Songhai empire and lost many provinces but remained an autonomous kingdom.

Formerly called Zaire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has had a volatile history marked by colonialists and tyrants trying to exploit the territory's vast resources. The Congalese - from the capitalists operating the copper and diamond mines to the hunting-and-gathering Pygmy people of the Ituri forests - cling to what they know: their strong extended families, resourcefulness and savvy, religion, and even some tribal superstition. HUMAN ORIGINS
Equatorial Africa has been inhabited since at least the middle Stone Age. Late Stone Age cultures flourished in the southern savanna after ca. 10,000 B.C. and remained viable until the arrival of Bantu-speaking peoples during the first millennium B.C. Evidence suggests that these Stone Age populations lived in small groups, relying for subsistence on hunting and gathering. Some of these groups may have remained long enough in one vicinity to be considered permanent residents, but others moved, following game along the extensive river network and through the rainforest.
The development of food-producing communities in Equatorial Africa is associated with the expansion of Bantu speaking peoples. In a long series of migrations beginning ca. 1,000 B.C. and lasting well into the mid-first millennium A.D., Bantu speakers dispersed from a point west of the Ubangi-congo River swamp across the forests and savannas of modern DRC. A northern group moved northeastward around the swamp and across the northern regions of DRC and settled in the forest zone. Meanwhile, other groups moved south and southwest, the former then migrating up the congo as well as into the inner part of the congo basin, while the southwestern Bantu speakers spread into modern Gabon, Congo, and lower DRC.

    Quick Overview:
Zambia's population comprises more than 70 Bantu-speaking tribes. Some tribes are small, and only two have enough people to constitute at least 10% of the population. Most Zambians are subsistence farmers. The predominant religion is a blend of traditional beliefs and Christianity. Expatriates, mostly British (about 15,000) or South African, live mainly in Lusaka and in the Copperbelt in northern Zambia, where they are employed in mines and related activities. Zambia also has a small but economically important Asian population, most of whom are Indians. The country is 42% urban.

PEOPLE PROFILE THE TABWA OF ZAMBIA In the eighteenth century some Tabwas moved south over the border of Zaire into Zambia. They occupied the area from the Zairian border in the north to the Lufubu river in the south. From west to east their area covers 150km of land with Lake Tanganyika being the eastern border. In time they intermarried with some of the people groups in the area. As a result they developed their own "language"; it is a unique blend of Tabwa and Bemba called the Shila dialect. Because of their lack of education the Tabwa used to have a minority complex, but this is changing. Other tribes interact quite easily with the Tabwa and neighbour relations are good. Only 15% of the population live in the urban areas. Farming is their main source of income and they trade produce with the Haushi and Bemba speaking people. They are a polygamous society and live in groups of 20 people. Shelter consists of little huts made out of

Follow Ups Post Followup ADC Network Notice Board FAQ Posted by jack kybird (80.225.87.107) on March 16, 2002 at 09:43:49: What is Palo Mayombe?
Palo Mayombe is an African Diasporic religion originated with the Bantu people from the Congo region of Africa
it's Priests are, called Paleros or are feared by many because of their practices of brujeria, or witchcraft.
Practice and worship in Palo is centered around the prendas , which are consecrated pots that contain sticks, bones, dirts and herbs that are sacred to a particular Nkisi, the Gods and Goddessess of Palo.
. Prendas are very powerful in the hands of a trained Palero, and can be utilized to perform nearly any function.
The Spirits of the Dead, called the Fumbi, are also of paramount importance to the Palero. Paleros work with Spirit Guides to obtain information and wisdom, as well as with lower spirits that serve a variety of functions at the Tata (Father) or Yaya's (Mother) behest. These lower spirits are sometimes referred to as perros, or dogs.
The Gods and Goddesses of Palo
In Palo Mayombe, the gods and goddesses that the Palero worships and calls upon for help are called the Nkisi. Each Nkisi rules over a different aspect of life and nature. The Nkisi are housed in special pots that are called prendas. The prenda also houses the Fumbi, are Spirits of the Dead who aid and serve the Nkisi as well as the Palero. Without the Nkisi and the Fumbi, the Palero is powerless.
