Louisiana was long inhabited by Native American tribes before the arrival of Europeans. The lasting mark of the Native Americans can be seen even today in the names used in Louisiana, such as Atchafalaya, Natchitouches (now spelled Natchitoches), Caddo, Houma, Tangipahoa, and Avoyel (Avoyelles Parish). The Regions of Mississippi
Mississippi is divided into four geographic regions. These four regions are further divided into several sub-regions that are defined by culture that has been directly influenced by the geology of the land. The four main regions and their sub-regions are:
  • The Gulf Coast
  • The Coastal Terrace
  • The Barrier Islands
  • The Southern Wooded Prairies
  • The Pine Belt
  • The Central Prairie
  • The Delta
  • The Mississippi-Yazoo River Basin
  • The Loess Bluffs
  • The Northern Highlands
  • The Red Clay Hills
  • The Flatwoods
  • The Pontotoc Ridge
  • The Black Prairie
  • The Northeastern Hills
These four regions each have their own history and pattern of settlement. Because of this, they each have their own cultural identities; some say they even have their own linguistic dialect. Even religious affiliation is different among these regions. And yet, the people of these regions fiercely identify as Mississippians.
The Gulf Coast
The Coastal Terrace
The Barrier Islands
The Barrier Islands lie some 10 to 20 miles offshore. These islands consist of sand dunes that barely break the waves of the sea. They are generally only a half mile to a mile wide and several miles long. Marshy lagoons support diverse and delicate wildlife in the interior of these islands. The islands serve an important geological function. They protect the mainland from the ravages of sea weather, sparing the mainland the brunt of the frequent hurricanes that make landfall here. On the inland side of one of these islands – Ship Island – the LeMoyne brothers set anchor and rowed ashore to found the first settlement of the Lousiana colony. The islands are generally uninhabitated except for tourists, sun-worshippers, and sportsmen who arrive by boat for daylong excursions.

New Orleans. The city brings to mind many things, from the roots of jazz, to amazing food at every turn, to Bourbon Street and the excesses of the French Quarter. But the origin and continued existence of this city is an ongoing exercise in existential problem solving. Founded by the French in 1718, taken by the Spanish in 1762, regained by Napolean in 1800, and sold to the United States exactly 200 years ago as part of one of the most extraordinary land deals in history the Lousiana Purchase New Orleans has survived wars, plagues, floods and fires. She sits below sea level, nestled in a curve of the Mississippi River, whose currents are so strong that the most distant location possible for a bridge is about 150 miles from its mouth. Because of the high water table, the city survives through a system of levees and canals, and her behemoth pumping stations are known and respected worldwide. Cruising past the French Quarter on a riverboat provides an astounding view of city rooftops, because the river sits on a higher plateau than the surrounding land. New Orleans is often called the crowning achievement of the Army Corps of Engineers; it is through their remarkable feats that the river's course is controlled and stopped from migrating.

A Great History Lesson Chalmette is a compelling look into America's "almost" forgotten past. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mr Patton takes the reader on a journey into the Deep South during the war of 1812. He explains how America could easily have lost its freedom and gone back to England's rule. Although the book is a narrow 143 pages (I read it in a night), the book covers the events leading up to the battle and the personalities of its combatants in detail. The description of the battle is edge of the seat reading. However, the most compelling part of this book for me was the way the author writes of the life and struggles of Andrew Jackson, a real American hero. If you love American History, you must read this book! Chalmette American victory at the most crucial time.

    New Orleans city, introduction
New Orleans, one of North America's most distinctive and culturally diverse cities, located in southeastern Louisiana on the Mississippi River, about 180 km (about 110 mi) from the Gulf of Mexico. The city was founded in 1718 on a site mostly below sea level on the east bank of the Mississippi and south of Lake Pontchartrain. New Orleans, named for Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans, regent of France under Louis XV, has been a leading commercial center since its founding and has one of the most active ports in the United States. Since World War II (1939-1945), the city's rich cultural heritage has contributed to its emergence as a major international tourist center. New Orleans has a semitropical climate, with an average daily temperature range of 5°C (42°F) to 16°C (61°F) in January and 23°C (73°F) to 33°C (91°F) in July.
