School violence and safety is a national concern. Today, more than ever, it is essential that communities, businesses, parents and students work together to develop and implement a disciplined program to create an environment where learning can take place.
In response to school shootings across the country, the Attorney General's Office, with the assistance of the Louisiana Department of Education, the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana (Caring Program for Children) and Cingular Wireless created "Operation Safe Haven" - a comprehensive safe school plan developed to ensure that our state's schools are educated on crisis prevention, and are prepared and trained to handle crisis situations. The program addresses identification of potential problems, preparation of crisis and disaster plans, and implementation of these plans for all schools and school employees.
The Attorney General's Drug Policy Section has a full-time Safe School Coordinator that trains school personnel and law enforcement on crisis prevention and response. The coordinator can assist communities in a variety of ways.

Posted on 08/22/1999 02:33:11 PDT by passionfruit NEW ORLEANS — Students who fail to address their teachers with courtesy titles will be disciplined under a state law taking effect when classes start this year — but many school officials have yet to decide just how mete out the punishment. Believed to be the first in the nation mandating respectful conversation, the law requires students in kindergarten through fifth grade to address teachers and other school employees as "ma'am" or "sir," or to use the appropriate titles, like Mr. or Ms. Each of the state's 66 public school systems is supposed to decide how to punish impolite students — with the law's only restriction on school officials saying that they can't expel or suspending violators. New Orleans schools have a committee looking into policy changes but it has not settled on anything, even with classes starting Thursday, said spokesman Walt Pierce. Neither have schools in Terrebonne Parish or Beauregard Parish.

Combating Creationism
in a Louisiana School System From The Textbook Letter
and distributed by The Textbook League Editor's Introduction When creationists attempted to push their religious doctrines into the public schools of Livingston Parish, they promoted a bogus "curriculum guide" and devised pseudoscientific "lesson plans" linked to the textbooks that students were using in science courses. When the creationists' deceptions were exposed, the parish's science curriculum committee got the message, but that was not the end of the matter. We present a first-hand report by the woman who led the opposition to the creationists' campaign.
Barbara Forrest
Livingston Parish lies in southeastern Louisiana, near Lake Ponchartrain. The parish seat is the town of Livingston, about 75 miles northwest of New Orleans. In 1994 a religious organization called the Origins Resource Association, based in New Orleans, began a campaign to force creationist doctrines into science classes taught in the parish's public schools. I led the opposition to that campaign, and my strategy was to expose the falsity of the creationists' "scientific" claims. Here is my account of what happened. In May 1994, three members of the Origins Resource Association including the organization's president, Edward Boudreaux attended a meeting of the Livingston Parish chapter of the Christian Coalition. According to an item on the agenda for that meeting, the Coalition chapter was contemplating an effort to force a change in the Livingston Parish School Board's "policy on the teaching of evolution." That policy said that science teachers would provide instruction about organic evolution, in accordance with the State of Louisiana's recommended curriculum.
