Search Home Searching the Links by Subject page: This search performs a keyword search of all of the fields in the database (URL, page title, notes, subject terms) and returns links to all subject headings and sites that contain the search term. NOTE: If two or more words are entered in the search box, it is the equivalent of performing an AND search for the terms. All of the terms must occur in the same field for the site to be a part of the search results. For example, searching for "Business Directories" would return any site in which both "Business" and "Directories" were in the title, URL, notes or subject terms. It would NOT, however, return a site in which "Business" only occurred in the title and "Directories" only occurred in the subject terms.

email: library@lasc.org Search the Library Catalog Located in the Supreme Court Building in New Orleans, the Law Library of Louisiana provides valuable services and resources for the judiciary, the bar, and the public throughout the state and beyond. The library, which was founded in 1855, now contains nearly 230,000 volumes in print and microform, including the complete chronology of both statutes and court reports for all fifty states and the federal government. Naturally, the collection of Louisiana legal materials is particularly rich historically. In addition to the law reviews of nearly all American law schools, the library subscribes to many bar journals and legal periodicals and newspapers devoted to a wide range of subjects. Both practice-oriented materials and scholarly treatises in all areas of law are acquired and updated systematically. As a depository of both U.S. and Louisiana documents, the library annually receives thousands of publications from administrative agencies and legislative bodies. Judges and judicial administrators will find a rich array of publications, such as those funded by the State Justice Institute, to fulfill their specific needs. Our foreign law section comprises statutes, law reports, and treatises from Commonwealth countries as well as rare French and Spanish texts.

The only history available prior to 1976 are entries in the Legislative Calendar and Journals. Since 1997, the Legislature’s web site has provided much improved access to this information. You will need: Revised Statute number and section, or Code Article number; Act number; Bill number and year. Act numbers are included in the notes in the Louisiana Statutes Annotated (West). The bill number will be included with the text of the Act. Act and bill numbers can also be located on the Legislature’s web site. In 1997, the Legislature began to publish bill status information, versions of the bill, votes, amendments, the digest, and more on the Internet. Go to: http://www.legis.state.la.us/ Look for Session Info at the top of the page. From 1997 to the present, this archive has almost everything you need. Mission Statement Service to our community is our foremost duty. We define community as broadly as possible. Of course, our students, faculty, and staff are our primary community. However, in a broader sense, all the Brothers of the Holy Cross, our alumni, our students' families, as well as the people in the Holy Cross neighborhood are also part of our community. We also define the idea of service broadly. Our primary duty is to provide materials to support the curriculum as well as to provide recreational reading materials for students, faculty and staff. However, since we want the idea of library service to be proactive, and we endorse the idea of the library as the center of the educational process in the school, we want to do more than provide materials upon request. Suggesting materials to teachers and students, encouraging reading and studying, and encouraging students and teachers to become seekers of knowledge are also part of the library's mission. The library should help to shape the whole person instead of just fulfilling the immediate need for information. After all, Holy Cross is part of a religious community dedicated to educating both the heart and the head of those entrusted to it.

    LOUISIANA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE
"Full-Text" Access Evaluation: Are We Getting the Real Thing? (Version 2.1.2) Shreveport, LA, March 8, 1998 Reported by Phoebe Timberlake Their study was intended to address their library’s growing need, shared by many institutions, to increase journal access while also controlling journal costs. The methodology included examining the two latest issues of seventy-five print journals also available "full-text" in IAC’s Expanded Academic Index ASAP database. The titles they selected represented social sciences, sciences, and humanities and were all "core" enough to be indexed by one of the Wilson indexes. Their findings were startling, indicating that the "full-text" version very often is not "full," sometimes lacking entire articles, often containing different treatment or presentation of tables, illustrations, citations, editorials, and other parts of the print articles. Timeliness was also a consideration with the percentage of recent print issues not yet available in the database growing, even over the course of the study. Some were not there even several years after the printed version had appeared. Their presentation pointed out that, in fact, electronically accessed full-text materials and their print counterparts are not the same.
