BASIC OVERVIEW OF UNIT The Acadians of Louisiana - A Story to Tell is a multidisciplinary unit which incorporates interaction with the Internet and hands - on collaborative activities which are primarily language arts based, but include learning and objectives in social studies, art, geography and mathematics. These lessons are designed to help students explore the history, mores, and influence of the Acadians who were exiled from Nova Scotia in 1765 and made their way to Louisiana. The goal is to encourage personal contact with those who know the poignant story best, through interviews with relatives and friends as well as over the Internet and to learn the art of storytelling in the process. The activities are designed to motivate students to write, illustrate, tell, and dramatize the stories they discover and to share those stories over the Internet. This unit can be adapted to serve other grade levels as well or adjusted for the needs of different ability groups The first four lessons focus on the oldest teaching format - storytelling - as a rich resource for understanding and building written and oral language while learning historical facts.
