The rainy coast country contains marshes and fertile delta lands; inland are rolling pine hills and prairies. The Mississippi dominates the many waterways, but there are other rivers (e.g., the Red River, the Ouachita, the Atchafalaya, and the Calcasieu) and the coast is threaded by many slow-moving bayous (e.g., the Teche, the Macon, and the Lafourche). There are lagoons such as Lake Ponchartrain, oxbow lakes made by Mississippi River cutoffs, and other lakes where the slow streams are clogged. A variety of recreational facilities makes the state an excellent vacationland; some of its lakes (e.g., Pontchartrain) have been highly developed as resort areas, and there is superb hunting and fishing throughout much of the region. LA Louisiana, named in honor of the French King Louis XIV, has a colorful history. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with Napoleon. It was admitted to the Union as the 18th state in 1812. A strong French influence is still evident throughout the state. Situated in the Deep South, Louisiana lies where the mighty Mississippi empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Water routes link the state with both the heart of America and lands across the sea. The life of Louisiana is based on a mixture of many peoples, cultures and customs. Tourists visit New Orleans for the city's festive Mardi Gras, the old French Quarter and the city's jazz clubs. Other attractions include Acadiana, the homeland of the Cajuns, and magnificent old plantation homes.

What makes one region different from another? A region's multicultural heritage as well as distinct demographic characteristics like age and occupation make regions different and special. New England - including Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Smith, Williams, Amherst, and Wesleyan - is unequaled by any other region. America's first college, Harvard, was founded at Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636. Without, however, large expanses of rich farmland or a mild climate, generations of exasperated New England farmers declared that the chief product of their land was stones. By 1750, many settlers had turned from farming to other pursuits. In their business dealings, New Englanders gained a reputation for hard work, shrewdness, thrift, and ingenuity.

    Spelling Crossword Puzzle
When I give geography related spelling words, I have my students create, on graph paper, a crossword puzzle of the words. The only "catch" is that all words must be 'crossed' at least twice. First, this makes the puzzle a little tougher. It also means the students will pay closer attention to how the word is spelled and they will write it a "few more times" as my students tell me. Some have even asked if they can color the unused spaces after they finish? Sure! The more time they spend with these words the better.
