Travel Reimbursement Guidelines for School Board Members
Act 376 which emerged from last year's legislative session singled out school board members to comply with the stringent travel regulations prescribed by the division of administration for state executive branch employees. These regulations severely limit school board members with regards to travel to important and pertinent state, regional, and national meetings. Attendance at such meetings enhance school board members' knowledge in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of their elected office. Representative Roy Quezaire, Jr. from Ascension Parish has agreed to author HB 229 this regular session. If this bill is passed and signed into law it repeals Act 376 While we feel that HB 229 has an excellent chance of receiving a favorable vote, we realize that it will taken an effort on the part of all of us. We urge you to ask your legislators to sign on as co-authors of HB 229 and its companion bill in the Senate if one is filed. The more authors/co-authors on a bill, the better the chance of passage.

Home About CHEF Homeschooling in Louisiana ... Links How can I protect our law in Louisiana? (1) Be involved in your local support group. Don't expect someone else to do all the work. (2) Encourage local leaders to stay in contact with CHEF of Louisiana. CHEF of Louisiana advocates the rights of home education in the state legislature. The Home School Legal Defense Association monitors legislative activity at the national level and keeps CHEF of Louisiana informed; any information relevant to Louisiana is forwarded to support group leaders through the Congressional Action Program (CAP). (3) Encourage local leadership to attend the annual CHEF of Louisiana Leadership Training Seminar, usually held the last Saturday in January. (4) Establish phone trees with specific guidelines. You can make a difference in the legislative process through phone or mail; numbers do count. We can expect to see legal challenges concerning regulation of home education. The enactment of burdensome regulations is one tactic opponents of home education use. (5) Join the Home School Legal Defense Association to receive your own legal protection as well as to support home education in our state and throughout the country. Even if you never use their services, your money would be put to good use. Any family involved in a court case represents all home schoolers in that state and even nationwide, as an unfavorable ruling would have an adverse affect for others. Likewise, a favorable ruling is of benefit to all home schoolers.
