Accomplishments of Accelerated Schools page 3
Family and Community Involvement
The education of young people occurs in many places and situations, both formal and non-formal. In accelerated schools, the strengths and contributions of family and community members are highly valued. By building on these strengths and actively soliciting these contributions, accelerated schools succeed in strengthening productive relationships with family and community members so that students benefit from a wide variety of experiences, resources, and opportunities. Many accelerated schools have forged fruitful partnerships with students' families and other community members, as the examples below highlight.
All components of the Accelerated School Project process encourage parent and family participation. A telling result is that parents and family members feel very welcome at accelerated schools and easily see where their efforts are useful, worthwhile, and appreciated. For example:

During its 25 years on the air, Louisiana Public Broadcasting has been the home for such quality entertainment as the award-winning Nova Antiques Roadshow and Masterpiece Theatre . However, many people don't realize that LPB also provides a wide range of educational services through "The LPB You Don't See." For example, LPB's Instructional Television (ITV) block feeds provide over 800,000 students with award-winning educational programs designed specifically for classroom use. In partnership with SERC, the Satellite Educational Resources Consortium, LPB's distance learning satellite courses give children in rural school districts the opportunity to take classes in subjects like Japanese, German, Latin, or Physics. But LPB believes that learning doesn't stop when you leave school. LPB's GED Connection classes help adults earn their high school diplomas, non-traditional students can earn college credit at home through our Going the Distance telecourses.
