Email: nrcgsh@ritVAX.isc.rit.edu Abstract: The personal computer with adaptive technology is one of the most empowering and liberating tools in the lives of persons with physical disabilities. It opens education and the entire information world to a new population, and it does so in a mainstream environment. A pc and speech synthesizer provides equal access for the visually impaired. A pc with alternate input systemssingle switch devices or voice recognitionopens access for persons with motor disabilities. A class discussion using CMC provides access for the hearing impaired without necessitating the use of a human interpreter. Not only will teachers want to include these students, but providing such access to computers and networks is required by law. This chapter will outline the problem and opportunity. It will provide vignettes of persons who have made significant use of adaptive computing in school. The chapter will give an in- depth report on a pilot project providing two courses using the internet with students from Gallaudet University and from the Rochester Institute of Technology in a CMC classroom. This project demonstrates the unique ability of CMC to mainstream disabled learners in the educational system. Two thirds of the participants were hearing impaired, and one was blind.

... What Should I Know About Children with Disabilities?
Read Advice Write an essay on this topic.
Aug 13 '00
Since I moved here to Georgia a year ago, I began a search to find appropriate Christian educational classes for my nine-year-old son who has high functioning autism. I had planned to go through my original church here which was the Catholic church. However, if you have read an older review that I had written many months ago, I found out that the new Catholic church here was not nearly as supportive as my other one was in Louisiana so I began a search to find a church which would assist me in this endeavor. (http://imzadi.epinions.com/kifm-review-510C-1628D204-390397B7-prod5)
This would require me leaving the Catholic Church, but since my oldest son was Confirmed this Easter and the church didn't seem interested in educating my youngest son, I started to look for other denominations in my local area. This proved to be a challenge because at first the nearest church that had services for disabled children was at least 30 minutes away and there would be no one from my local area for my oldest son to relate to.
However, I am pleased to tell you that I found a wonderful church here that is about 20 minutes north of here, in a neighboring school district where not only are there children from the area of my youngest son's school attending, but my oldest one as well. This new church is Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, Georgia, but what I love about Hebron is that they don't broadcast themselves as "Baptist". They just tell people that they are from Hebron Church which is really great to me!

623 Dental Care for the Special Needs Patient
General Information Course Director: Michael Strayer, D.D.S., M.S. Office/Phone: 3153 Postle Hall / 292-6748 Office Hours: Wednesday, 8:30-11:30AM or by appointment Quarter/Year: Spring / 2002 Dent III Location: 1183 Postle Hall Class Time: 7:30-8:30am Wednesdays Credit Hours: Purpose This one credit-hour course is required for third year dental students. The course is designed to foster an understanding of the unique concerns associated with the provision of oral health care to the Geriatric and Special Needs patient. These categories of patients require the oral health care provider to have an understanding of the total patient milieu including: problems of patient mobility, psychosocial issues, socioeconomic issues, medical considerations, and appropriate communication skills needed to interact with the patient and family. Guest lecturers will be invited to provide a broad range of expertise and experiences regarding the provision of services to the Geriartic/Special Needs patient.
Rationale
The primary focus for many oral health care professionals is on the treatment of ambulatory patients capable of receiving oral health care in a private dental office. However, there are many individuals in the community unable to access oral health care in this traditional manner. The Geriatric and Special Needs patient may have an inability to be transferred from a wheelchair to a dental chair, or they may be confined or unable to travel as a result of a chronic illness or disability.
