ECONOMIC IMPACT Data courtesy of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association Whether deserved or not , the mere mention of Louisiana often conjures up images of Party-Central, along with corrupt politicos ruling via the stereotypical style of good-ol'-boy wheeling 'n' dealing. But by golly, the powers-that-be are out to dispel this bad rap once and for all. They intend to accomplish this feat via a master plan for economic development first implemented in 1997 by the Louisiana Economic Development Council. Dubbed Vision 2020, the initiative is described as a living strategic plan containing a series of benchmarks for education, information technology and industry-specific initiatives to make Louisiana one of the top 10 states to live, work, visit and conduct business by the year 2020. The recently announced initial five-year update of the master plan is focused on maximizing Louisiana's current strength in oil and gas exploration and production.

E-sales costing states millions

U.S. total is $13.3 billion in lost tax revenue
By Brice Wallace
Deseret News business writer The simple push of the "Enter" button to complete a purchase through the
Internet could be hurting schools, police departments and other government services. So say statistics released Tuesday in Washington, D.C., by the Institute for State Studies, located at the Salt Lake-based Western Governors University. Those stats show that state and local governments lost $13.3 billion in sales tax revenue from purchases made online, up 41 percent from a 2000 projection of $9.4 billion. In 2006, the loss is expected to be $45.2 billion. Five years later, the estimate is $54.8 billion. Skyrocketing business-to-business e-commerce activity

Here are links to more than 700 women's studies (including "gender studies") programs, departments, and research centers around the world that have web sites. Programs and departments offering graduate degrees or concentrations have this fact noted in an annotation below the link. For a larger list of women's studies programs, including those without web sites, see the September issue of the Modern Language Association's journal PMLA or Gerri Gribi's listing of Women's Studies programs in the U.S. For information about institutions offering Women's Studies graduate and undergraduate degrees online, see Online Degrees in Women's Studies NOTE: After I had started putting this listing together, Kate Robinson told me about an annotated collection of links she has compiled of Women's Studies programs in the United States . I've decided to leave my links up as well, especially since they include programs outside the US , and since I keep learning about new sites. (My listing now includes more than 700 links; I last updated it on March 22, 2004

Final comments were filed in response to the PSC June 1998 Order soliciting comments on electric utility industry restructuring. As a result, Interim Report No. 1 was issued by the Task Force in September 1999.

Regions of Mind History, U.S. regionalism, foreign policy, politics, life. Exports and U.S. states H email link Here's an unusual question: During 2003, which U.S. states exported the most to Iran? The answers may surprise you; they did me. The top four states: Louisiana: $43 million.
Georgia: $38 million. North Carolina: $7 million. Ohio: $1 million. Or what about exports to Israel during 2003? The top five states: New York: $2.3 billion.
New Jersey: $938 million.
California: $752 million.
Texas: $487 million.
Louisiana: $188 million Those were among the findings I made after visiting this useful site that breaks down Department of Commerce statistics in different ways. I learned about the site from this item from the Progressive Policy Institute, affiliated with the Democratic Leadership Council. Exports from many U.S. states fell after 2000, and during 2003, the export levels for 27 states were still below those of 2000, according to the PPI analysis. More (with emphasis added): American goods exports peaked at $780 billion in the year 2000, and then (for the first time since the early 1980s) fell for two consecutive years.  After bottoming out at $690 billion in 2002, a weaker currency rate plus strong export growth to China brought the total back up to $723 billion last year.  Forty-three states saw exports rise, and 18 seem to have set new records last year.  ...
