87. Political State Report: Straight From The Trenches
Local politicians may use this data to push for alternative schools at all elementary and secondary levels, which they believe will radically cut down on
http://www.polstate.com/archives/001157.html
VA: 1 in 2 Richmond Student Suspended Last Year The 25,000 student Richmond school system handed out 12,231 suspensions last year. Local politicians may use this data to push for alternative schools at all elementary and secondary levels, which they believe will radically cut down on suspensions. Alternative schools have worked in other places, but I have my doubts about their effectiveness as a complete strategy. I'm going to roughly estimate that the average suspended student is suspended 3 times a year. This gives you 4,000 individual students suspended last year. You're going to move 1 in 6 children to an alternative school? On what criteria will these students be judged to decide whether they move into the alternative school? Will the program be voluntary or mandatory? This could turn into a horror issue if an alternative school program is expanded beyond truly troubled kids to include random malcontents and act-ups. by scott wrightson Comments Trackback

Chapter Benefits
  • Exclusive use of the Break Away Name and Logo - The Break Away name and logo are registered service marks for the organization. Since these marks represent a commitment to quality alternative break programs, including thorough pre-trip preparation and effective post-trip activities that far exceed most volunteer vacation experiences, only groups affiliating with Break Away and its philosophies have permission to use the name and logo.
  • Access to the Break Away SiteBank and Trip Report Database - Break Away works with hundreds of schools and community groups nationwide. More than 250 nonprofit organizations list their volunteer opportunities in the Break Away SiteBank database. Those looking for alternative break volunteer opportunities can quickly access a profile of these agencies, including site fees, sample work projects, housing options, and more. Chapter Schools can also share feedback on these nonprofit "Host Sites" through the Trip Report database, accessible through the members area.
