Commentary: Call of the conscience
Kate Stanley, Star Tribune October 1, 2000 As circumstances focus Western eyes on Africa, American visitors find the place less a mystery than they expected. Heartbreak is a fixture of the landscape, but so is hope. Africa's preposterous burdens oblige the world's comfortable to forsake the luxury of lamentation and join in imagining Africa's future. The lights have gone out again in Lagos, but you don't even blink. Your Nigerian friends have already explained: At NEPA, PLC - the National Electric Power Authority - blackouts come free with the service. Hence the joke: NEPA, PLC, the locals say, stands for "Never Expect Power Always, Please Light Candles." This, you have come to understand, is Nigeria. A land of light humor and recurring darkness. The richest nation in Africa, yet one of the poorest. Spilling with oil, and clogged with lines at gas pumps. The continent's newest democracy, and capital of corruption. A place teeming with possibility - and with peril.

Discovery Tour to Malawi
by Helen C. Broadus
Venue International Professionals, Inc. held a Familiarization (FAM) Tour to Malawi in conjunction with the Africa Travel Association's 26th Annual Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. 2001. see Malawi map BACKGROUND . Malawi is known affectionately as the "warm Heart of Africa", where visitors are welcomed with open arms and made to feel at home by friendly people. Formerly called Nyasaland (Land of the Lakes), it is one of Africa's most beautiful countries and is an affordable tourist destination that compares in scenic beauty to some of the world's top resorts. For a country that is completely landlocked, it is best known for its 558 km-long Lake Malawi that runs down the eastern side of the country but also has an abundance of spectacular wildlife, incredible scenery and genuinely friendly people. Lake Malawi, affectionately called the "Lake of a Thousand Shinning Stars" is the largest freshwater body in the world. Basically it is just like an inland sea, offering picturesque golden beaches in a year-round tropical sunny climate. One can simply just relax on an uncrowded beach or hand feed tropical fish at the lake's freshwater national park, which has been declared a national heritage site by UNESCO

Malawi Country Information
Malawi is a smallish, landlocked country wedged between Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Roughly 900km (560mi) long and 150km (95mi) east to west at its widest point, Malawi is slightly larger than Bulgaria or Cuba. Most of its eastern border is formed by Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa), the third-largest lake in Africa, which covers almost a fifth of Malawi's total area. The Great Rift Valley passes through Malawi, forming the trough in which Lake Malawi sits.
Malawi's main highland areas are the Nyika and Viphya Plateaux, and Mt Mulanje in the south. Malawi's highest point is the summit of Sapitwa (3000m/9840ft) at the centre of Mt Mulanje. The main river in the country is the Shire (pronounced 'Shir-ee'), which flows out of the southern end of Lake Malawi and eventually into the Zambezi River in Mozambique.
