    What About Computers?
Each class has a computer, however like many other schools, they are quite out of date. For my daughter, I don't worry about this aspect too much as I feel I can teach her computer skills at home. We have a fully equipped computer in the kitchen where she and her sister can use it and not be isolated in a computer room or den. We also work together using Microworlds Project Builder , a computer language for children and find it to be an excellent tool for teaching computer skills. At the next level up, grade 4,5,6, computer skills are introduced in a more regular way at Ottawa Montessori Schools.

Logo is a computer programming language first developed in the late , by a team at BBN led by Seymour Papert , Wallace Feurzeig, and Daniel Bobrow. Logo was originally about manipulating words and sentences, hence its name, derived from the Greek word "logos" meaning "word". Papert, a professor at MIT and the author of Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas , later added the turtle graphics for which Logo is now most famous. Papert used LISP but changed the syntax so it is much easier to read. One could say that Logo is Lisp without the parentheses. Today, it is known principally for its "Turtle Graphics" but it has significant list handling facilities, file handling and I/O facilities and can be used to teach most computer science concepts, as Brian Harvey does in his "Computer Science Logo Style" trilogy. The course teaches the basics of the computer programming language Logo and its uses in elementary, middle, and high schools. This new method of presentation via the world wide web will allow you to learn the language in a more independent setting, free of the normal classroom time and location constraints. What to Do We estimate that the work for this module will take you an average of about 20 hours to complete with a range of about 15 to 25 hours. You can do the work at school or at home, and you can fit it into your schedule however you see fit. Technically, you have 12 weeks to complete the module after you enroll. However, we recommend that you complete the module in eight weeks or less. That should easily be possible if you set aside at least two or three hours each week, to work on the module. Don't skip the recommended exploration times throughout the lessons. These are necessary times for you to mature in the language. STEP #1

You should open this file with Microsoft Word and follow its instructions. This serves as an introduction to Logo. There are a series of tasks in this lesson that you are to complete. If you are enrolled for graduate or continuing education credit, submit Assignment 9_1 through the Module Hand-In System using your MTL login and password before you go on to Step 2.

    What is ZLogo?
ZLogo is a graphical front end to the Logo programming language. You can see a screenshot here. Our testing of ZLogo has shown that the average learning curve for children ages 5 and 6 is a half hour! One of the great things about ZLogo is that the child does not know they are learning to "program" or "write code". The are able to manipulate a small world. A world that, while small, does not severely restrict the child's creativity and inquisitiveness. ZLogo is an extremely satisfying experience for children. In a world that is big and often out of their control ("sit here", "don't touch that", "sit down and be quite", etc) ZLogo allows them a world of their own creation to control and manipulate. The process of trying something (often just a shot in the dark) and slowly refining the commands to get the final result is wonderful to watch. A sight made even more wonderful by their complete lack of realization that they are learning valuable skills. One's inclination is to say "do you realize what you just did?"... but the explanation is often lost on the child, they are simply "trying to get things to work". The look on a child's face after accomplishing a task which just 10 minutes ago was considered "impossible" is priceless. It's what keeps teachers in the profession.

    Logo Programming Language
Overview : Devised in the late 60s by Papert and his colleagues at MIT as an educational aid for children, Logo is a subset of LISP and can be used as a serious programming language. Indeed, Burke and Genise's (1987) undergraduate text exclusively uses Logo to explain fundamental principles of computer science, and Shafer's (1986) book on Macintosh AI programming is based on Logo. Logo is compact, making it an excellent vehicle for exploring AI on a PC. A version of Logo exists for virtually every major brand of desktop computer, with versions in most cases marketed by the computer manufacturer. Logo is best known for graphics; the user programs a cursor (called a "turtle") to draw figures on the screen. Graphics aside, Logo has a number of list manipulation functions (in a syntax that is more friendly than LISP's) that make it ideal for AI applications, and random number generating functions that make it suitable for simulations. Goldenberg and Feurzeig (1987) show how Logo can be used to explore computational linguistics, and Harvey's three volumes (1985, 1986, 1987) give a wide range of other applications and projects.
