Fall 2004 Philosophy Graduate Courses Philosophy 301. Seminar. Tuesdays 9-12. Instructor: John Troyer. This seminar provides a survey of 20th century analytic philosophy. If you're steeped in this tradition, you don't need this seminar. Readings will include: Ayer (ed.), Logical Positivism ; Ayer, Language, Truth and Logic ; Quine, From a Logical Point of View ; Kripke, Naming and Necessity ; and various articles. Philosophy 307. Logic. Tuesdays 2-5. Instructor: JC Beall. This course covers the standard logics that are often presupposed in contemporary analytic philosophy, especially in philosophy of language and metaphysics (but also ethics and, increasingly, philosophy of mind). In particular, we cover standard modal logics and standard many-valued logics. The focus is on the semantic ideas, rather than proof theory. We will focus on the propositional level. NOTE: We will review classical logic (semantics) as a starting point, but you really should have an acquaintance with classical first-order logicat the very least, classical propositional logic. If you have any questions, please contact JC Beall:

RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests fall in three areas: formal logic with emphasis on proof theory and non-classical logics in computer science; history and philosophy of logic, history of analytic philosophy; and philosophy of mathematics. Although these are distinct areas, they are closely connected: a large part of (early) analytic philosophy was concerned with logical investigations and philosophy of mathematics (especially in Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein); past and current philosophy of mathematics is tightly linked to the advances of formal logic in the last hundred years, in no small part to proof theory; and much of the history of logic of the early 20th century is history of non-classical logic. Many logics used in computer science (in particular, modal and temporal logics, intuitionistic logic, and many-valued logics) originated from philosophy, and interesting connections persist. If you're interested what results I've achieved and what impact my research has had, you may consult the list of publications and the list of citations.

THE CENTRE FOR LOGIC, EPISTEMOLOGY AND THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE
Areas of Work Though mainly of interdisciplinary character, the research developed
in the CENTER FOR LOGIC, EPISTEMOLOGY AND THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE (CLE)
is organized into four individual areas:
  • Epistemology and Philosophy of Science, History of Science, Interdisciplinary Studies, Logic.
The area of EPISTEMOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE concentrates
its activities under what we could call an analytic perspective,
if we understand by this term the application of rigorous methods
(including formal ones) both to formulate and to solve philosophical
problems. The main interests of the researchers in this area are: Philosophy of Formal Sciences
  • logic, mahtematics and the foundations of computer science Philosophy of Human Sciences Philosophy of Mind Philosophy of Language
Their main publication is MANUSCRITO. The area of HISTORY OF SCIENCE concentrates its activities presently in the History of Physics, albeit the natural difficulties due to the lack of tradition in this field in Brazil.
The CLE maintains an Archive for Documentation in the History of Sciences which primarily collects and organizes material from Brazilian and Latin-American sources.

Topics include the metatheory of propositional logic (including completeness and soundness results), multi-valued logics, and an introduction to modal logics. The latter are logics enriched with non-truth-functional operators, and are used in this unit to study the logic of possibility and necessity, the logic of time, and the logic of knowledge. Spring: Staff What is the Best Way to Live?
Prereq: Units: 3-0-9 Subject examines classic texts from the history of Western moral philosophy, and their answers to the question of what is the best way to live. These texts include works by Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Hume, Kant, and J. S. Mill. Among the questions that arise are: What is it to have a good life? How important is moral integrity, personal happiness, individual autonomy, and self expression, if one is to live in the best way that one can? Emphasis on close analysis and the evaluation of philosophical ideas and arguments. C. Hare

Gateway to Logic The core of this server is the Gateway to Logic , a collection of interactive logic software. It is aimed at being used at courses and lectures as a means of demonstration and visualization. Part of the software offers a graphical user interface (and requires Java), part of it doesn't (and works with virtually any browser). Teaching This server also hosts, be it in German, information on Dr. K. Dethloff's lecture (Introduction to Logic) and on my own supplementary course . The German introductory textbook I have written is available both online and as a Postscript and a PDF file. Finally, there are some exercises and their solutions. Although the comments are in German, too, the logical formulae will be understood by speakers of any language.
