Welcome to this philosophy site!
The following list covers some main authors and problems, aiming at giving a view of what philosophy is. Note that the most notorious lack lies in the history of modern philosophy, to wit, the empiricist and idealist traditions.
The links provided (including: books published or not, articles in print , conference papers, discussions, course handouts, lecture notes , etc.) have been selected according to analytic standards: clear definitions of terms used, and argumentative justification of conclusions.
In order to read PDF , or zipped documents, you should have the appropiate software. Acrobat Reader and WinZip allow you to view these files. To get them for free, go to the Software Section below.

By applying deductive methods, argumentations take place on the basis of given assumptions, leading to a syllogism. Due to the necessarily congruent structures in the people’s thinking, semantics become of great importance for logic. This is what shall be examined in this forum.

I will help you to edit your work. Lack of proficiency in English writing skills will not preclude you from qualifying to take any of my courses (believe me, they will improve), and it will not result in lower grades. I am primarily interested in the quality of your ‘ideas.’ Please address all questions about my courses to: cafedifferance@yahoo.com

Falsification is the methodological imperativ for science, making permanent criticism the core of an epistemological advance. RELEVANCY
OR RELATEDNESS IN OTHER DISCIPLINES Relevancy (or relatedness ) has been recognized as a key notion not only in analytical philosophy (which produced the first article on this subject), but also in philosophy of language (pragmatics), logics (relevance and relatedness logics), philosophy of science (with a statistical model of explanation) and in a type of sociological phenomenology. (Phenomenology is a philosophical doctrine teaching that one can arrive at essences, or intelligible structures in consciousness, by a description of subjective or mental processes in which all assumptions about the causes, consequences and wider significance of these processes have been eliminated.) Since the subject of relevancy is itself already being discussed in all these fields of thought, it is not strictly necessary to show how the notion of relevancy is used in philosophical (sub-)disciplines other than ethics. To demonstrate the importance of relevancy it will suffice here to have a general idea of what authors in these other fields of thought have said before on the role of relevancy itself.

Philosophy of logic can be roughly characterized as those philosophical topics which have emerged either from the technical development of symbolic (mathematical) logic, or from the motivations that logicians have offered for their technical pursuits. In settling on a list of subjects to classify as philosophy of logic, therefore, there is a certain degree of arbitrariness, since the issues which emerge from the technical development of logic can equally well be assigned to such areas as semantics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, epistemology, and even ethics (see Semantics Language, philosophy of Mathematics, foundations of

Preliminary note : The purpose of these pages is to give both the beginner and the more experienced reader a brief guide to the introductory literature on general philosophy, metaphysics, ontology, phenomenology, analytical philosophy, philosophical logic and the philosophy of logic.. In its initial form the pages will contain a selection of introductory readings, with brief annotations on the content (for the most important books, also the index); subsequently them will be expanded to include more specific essays on selected problems. In the sections for beginners, preference will be given to those books more readily available, in other sections some books could be out of print; if your Library does not possess the volume, it may be able to obtain it via interlibrary loan. Every effort will be made to give details that facilitate bibliographical research.

    Non-Aristotelian logic
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The term non-Aristotelian logic is used for any system of logic Roughly speaking, logic is the study of prescriptive systems of reasoning, that is, systems proposed as guides for how people (as well, perhaps, as other intelligent beings/machines/systems) ought to reason. Logic says which forms of inference are valid and which are not. Traditionally, logic is studied as a branch of philosophy, but it can also be considered a branch of mathematics and Computer Science. How people actually reason is usually studied under other headings, including cognitive psychology. Logic is traditionally divided into deductive reasoning, concerned with what follows logically from given premises, and inductive reasoning, concerned with how we can go from some number of observed events to a reliable generalization.

Published April 30, 2004 The paper investigates interpretations of propositional and first-order logic in which validity is defined in terms of partial indices; sometimes called possibilities but here understood as non-empty subsets of a set W of possible worlds. Truth at a set of worlds is understood to be truth at every world in the set. If all subsets of W are permitted the logic so determined is classical first-order predicate logic. Restricting allowable subsets and then imposing certain closure conditions provides a modelling for intuitionistic predicate logic. The same semantic interpretation rules are used in both logics for all the operators. Propositional Identity and Logical Necessity David B. Martens Text PDF Citation BibTeX 10 pages.
