Christian Gottschall
I welcome you to my homepage, visitor number 38257. Let me say with all due respect that it is a very courageous decision to read the English version. German Wenn Sie diesen Satz verstehen, sind Sie auf meiner deutschen Homepage weit besser aufgehoben. I study philosophy and work at an important Austrian software firm (important, that is, in Austria) as a programmer. Besides, there are my introductory courses in logic at the Department of Philosopy at the University of Vienna , and a vast amount of programs especially in the field of logic that I wrote without any noticeable financial success. Needless to say, most of my programs are designed to work with Linux. In recent years I have found out that linguistics is much more fun than philosophy. One result of this enlightment is my simple LCA checker that does nothing useful at all but was a lot of fun writing. To see some personal data including a sparse overview about my interests and even my character, please select the fourth or fifth word of this sentence... I compiled some information on my logic courses, my introductory text book, and on some other important things in life, like Linux, logics, philosophy and software history. Probably this information won't be useful to you since, with the exception of my

Spring Quarter 2001
Philosophy 169: INTENSIONAL LOGIC
*Prerequisites: The basics of predicate logic.
*Abstract The first half of this course is a working guide
to modal logic, emphasizing general methods and ideas
(bisimulation, expressive power, proof structure, complexity),
developed in tandem with standard first-order logic (translation
and correspondence). The second half presents applications in
various fields: computer science, AI, linguistics, mathematics,
and economics. It should bring you up to a level where you can
understand the current research literature. *Schedule (tentative) Week 1, Overview of modal logic and its applications Week 2, Expressive power of modal languages; bisimulation Week 3, Methods for describing validities; complexity Week 4, Extended modal languages, landscape of fragments Week 5, Modal logics of knowledge Week 6, Modal logics of action Week 7, Modal logics of information update Week 8, Modal logics of games Week 9, 'Modal deconstruction' of classical logics *Texts (a) J van Benthem, "A Manual of Intensional Logic"

Spring Quarter 2001, Philosophy 298: LOGIC IN GAMES
Prerequisites: the basics of first-order logic and modal logic.
Games are part of logic since Antiquity. Logical validity reflects
winning strategies in argumentation. Many tasks can be cast as games:
semantical evaluation, model building, model comparison. But there
is also a lot of logic in general games: their process structure, and
the way players reason while navigating. The course unifies both views,
including links with computer science and game theory.
Schedule (tentative)
Part I Logic Games
Week 1, Semantical evaluation and model comparison Week 2, Argument and procedure Week 3, Strategies, operations, and complexity Part II Game Logics Week 4, Actions, outcomes and modal logics Week 5, Sequential game combination: dynamic logic Week 6, Parallel game combination: linear logic Extra, Many levels, representation, and branching time Part III Adding Realistic Structure Week 7, Imperfect information: dynamic-epistemic logic Week 8, Information dynamics of play

Chi-Product Generator X-product Generator (chi - pronounced ki) is a Windows NT/95/98/2000/Me application developed to facilitate exploration of traces, chines, X-products and related objects. This software was developed by N.A Friedrich. (2.6M) Paradox Tolerant Explorer Paradox Tolerant Explorer (para) is a Windows NT/95/98/2000/Me application developed to facilitate research into the preservationist approach to paradox tolerant logics. It offers a convenient, interactive visual resource to aid the understanding of paradox tolerant logics as extensions of more classical, paradox intolerant logics. Para allows the user to define the preservational profiles of a logic's connectives , and then to extend this logic to a logic of higher-order valuation . Para also provides a Validity Appraisal mechanism in which sentences can be appraised for validity in various logics and their extensions. Para can also be utilized as a resource to visually derive an axiomatization of a given logic As an ongoing project, para was designed to incorporate additional enhancements. These enhancements may include the addition of purely user-defined connectives, the use of n-ary designational assessments per valuation, or the use of para to solve all the World's troubles. Some of these future enhancements may be easier to implement than others.

ERKENNTNIS
Scope of the Journal
ERKENNTNIS is a philosophical journal publishing papers which are committed in one way or another to the philosophical attitude which is signified by the label "analytic philosophy". It concentrates on those philosophical fields which are particularly inspired by this attitude, though other topics are welcome as well. These fields are:
- epistemology
- philosophy of science, foundations and methodology of science in general and of particular natural and human sciences such as physics, biology, psychology, economics, social sciences, etc.,
- philosophy of mathematics,
- logic, philosophy of logic, and all kinds of philosophical logics,
- philosophy of language,
- ontology, metaphysics, theory of truth, theory of mind,
- practical philosophy, i.e. ethics, philosophy of action, philosophy of law, etc.
ERKENNTNIS is a journal of systematic philosophy; contributions should not be purely historical, but attempt to advance current systematic issues.
ERKENNTNIS is an international journal; contributors from all over the world are welcome. It is intended to be an intergrating platform furthering international exchange of philosophical attitudes, ideas, theories, and arguments. The common language is English; only a small proportion of papers in German is allowed.
The emphasis of ERKENNTNIS is on papers presenting original research. But there is also a review section containing relatively brief and informative reviews als well as longer critical discussions of selected books.
