Half & Half is a three year old gelded llama. He was the very first llama I ever owned. His dietary quirks include (but not limited to) Cheetos (his favorite), granola bars and Snickers bars. ... Other Shetland Photos Welcome to Honeystones Cottage, the home of Chuck and Jackie Deems and AMAZING GRACE LLAMAS. Honeystones Cottage is a 150+ year-old hand-hewn sandstone cottage that was once a Stagecoach stop and part of the Underground Railroad before the Civil War. Our home is nestled amidst 30 rolling acres in the middle of Mohican Country near Mansfield, Ashland, and Wooster, Ohio. We offer beautiful, gentle Llamas for sale and we believe in ongoing follow-up to new owners. We'll even visit your farm to make suggestions about how you can ready your home for your new Llamas. AMAZING GRACE LLAMAS began in August of 1996 with the purchase of two young male Llamas. Though we'd never owned livestock before (Chuck had never even had a pet hamster when he was a child) the ease of raising Llamas allowed us to successfully integrate these animals into our lives. Our herd grew quite rapidly when we got involved in Llama rescue 4 years ago and our herd population averages between 33-38 Llamas. Our farm is home to 20 or so cats (mostly rescue, "drop offs", or adopted through the Humane Societyall spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and named) and three dogs (two were "drop offs").
Our Mission
Our farm breeding goals are: to produce Llamas with correct conformation, gentle dispositions, and luxurious fiberin that order. We are particular about the quality of our breeding stockit has taken us 4 years to choose our breeding males and females. And, we do not believe in overproducing animalswe strive for quality not quantity. We believe in "resting" our females for 1-2 seasons before rebreeding, giving them time to relax a bit and also giving their cria a good start in life.

    ready for new homes!
We try hard to match llamas with appropriate new homes, and won't sell if we are apprehensive about the situation, or if the llama and prospective owner don't "click." We certainly won't sell to someone who is in a hurry to purchase or who wants to buy before learning the basics of llama care and handling. Finally, because learning about and getting to know the particular llama is a key ingredient in the future happiness of both the llama and the new owner, we have no qualms about weeding out shoppers who aren't interested in the small investment of prepurchase visits to our farm. Note: When we say "packer", we mean just that: A llama capable of multi-day trips carrying at least 60-80 pounds in any type of weather and over any terrain that a llama can negotiate. If you're only looking for a day-hiking companion to carry lunches and jackets, most light-duty or limited-duty packers will probably suffice; if you don't hike or pack right now, do everyone a favor and just get a pair of well-trained, older starter llamas. It's perfectly OK to get llamas as pets and companions because you like them.

In that pursuit, they're scattered, some by the barn, some under shade trees, others down by a pond. But one loud whistle brings an interested throng, crowding around the bed of Mitchell's pickup and the bale of hay sitting there. "They're pretty smart; they know what the whistle means," he says, wiping his brow as he wrestles the hay. Fair enough, but what exactly does one do with this creature? "For one, I don't have to mow the lawn," he says. "They like the grass when they're not eating hay. I guess they've always been used as pack animals, carrying loads, sometimes pulling a cart. Llamas are strong for their size. They're raised for their milk and wool. Some use them as guard animals, and some just keep them as companion animals." Wait a sec...back up. Guard animals?

Llama drama as pets save farmer
    Updated 23 October 2003, 10.51
A herd of llamas took an injured man hostage, to 'protect' him from paramedics trying to help him. Farmer Graham Bailey, 72, tripped in a rabbit hole while feeding the six-foot beasts. They surrounded him, keeping ambulance crews away. Eventually they were scared off by an air ambulance helicopter. "The ringleader Milo stirred the others up," a spokesman said. Mr Bailey usually uses the llamas to guard his sheep from foxes and dogs. Very protective He's just as protective of the four animals, Bertie, Milo, Horatio and Felix, as they are of him. "They take their job very seriously so I wasn't surprised when they came to protect me," he said. Bailey, from Kettering, Northants, was taken to hospital, where he was treated for a fractured hip.

and Tips for buying a good llama
We have been raising llamas since 1987 Llamas are raised to use as pets, breeding stock, sheep guards and back packers for hikers. They have also been used in pet therapy with, for example, autistic children.
Their primary agricultural use, however, is for wool production. They have lovely warm, soft wool which can be knitted into sweaters, socks etc. The coarser wool can be woven into horse blankets, or lead ropes
They are a herd animal, so any llama owner should keep more than one llama, so that they do not get lonely. The exception is the sheep or goat guard, who is put in with these animals at about six months of age, when he is weaned, so that he bonds with the herd. He then protects the sheep or goats by chasing away predators, such as coyotes. He may not be effective at this until he is at least a year old.. These guard llamas are best gelded, because if left intact they may try to breed the sheep and could unintentionally suffocate them
Llamas are quite easily trained to pull a cart, either alone or in pairs or larger numbers. Geldings are considered best for this purpose. They can also be ridden by children or small adults. They can carry more than one hundred pounds if they are reasonably large adult males, or one third of their body weight. They should be gradually conditioned if they are to carry heavier loads. If the load is too heavy they tend to simply sit down and refuse to budge!

Meet Freckles the Llama! Posted by AHS on Apr 19, 2004, 12:48
Hello, my name is “Freckles” and I am one of the cutest and sweetest llamas that you’ll ever meet. You don’t usually see llamas in Arizona , but I live in a nice, big barn with my mommy, “Mocha,” at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion. I was born in a small Arizona town called Hidden Valley I got my name because I have freckles all over my body. I like them because my mommy says that they add character! I am only three years old, but I have had a happy and interesting life so far. Before I came to the Campus for Compassion, I got to meet George W. Bush while he was running for president of the United States in 2000! I was living in Sedona at the time and I gave him a big ol’ kiss when I met him. I like people and he seemed like a very nice man. A photographer took a picture of me kissing President Bush and it was featured in Time magazine! Woweeee, I’m famous! I was brought to the Campus for Compassion to be a part of the Stardust Equestrian Therapy program. I feel like I’ve had a good impact on some of the kids who have come to visit me. I remember one teenager who suffered from attention deficit disorder (ADD). My human friends told me that he did not interact very well with other kids. But when I met him, I liked him right away! I let him come into my stable and pet me! I never let anyone do that before him, but he was special. I was told that I had a calming effect on him and all of his friends were amazed that he could pet me so easily. We are good buddies now.

    115. Why Llamas
llamas add contentment to your life. llamas are clean intelligent. They make excellentpets and companions. llamas are easy to raise and are low maintenance.
    http://www.spocom.com/users/ballardcreek/why_llamas.htm
Why Llamas ? Llamas add contentment to your life. Llamas are easy to raise and are low maintenance. Gentle and inquisitive, small children and seniors can easily handle them. Llamas are quiet, peaceful animals and make humming sounds to communicate. Llamas only eat between 4-6 lbs. of hay per day and require no special diet. They graze and browse and have a very efficient digestive system. Llamas require little space; 1/8 of an acre is fine for a llama and 4 foot field fence is usually adequate. The llama's beauty and dignity soothes the soul. Llamas are easy to train to lead, load and carry a pack. The ultimate packing companion, llamas have low impact on the environment. Llamas use communal "potty" piles which are practically odorless. Their pellets make wonderful, weed free fertilizer. Llamas get along well with other animals including goats, sheep, donkeys, horses, cats and family dogs. Llamas don't bark, bite or have fleas. Llamas can be trained to pull carts. A single llama can be an efficient "guard" for sheep or goats.
