Frequently
Asked
Questions
about
Llamas
Do they spit?
Sure they spit. Usually it is between themselves when they are having a dispute about food or territory. Everyone has a story about someone they know that has been spat at by a llama. If they spit at humans, it is probably because they have been mistreated or they are protecting their baby. Anyway it is no big deal, it is just chewed-up grass and easily washes off. I would rather be spit at than bitten or kicked, both of which rarely happen with llamas.
What is their temperament?
Each llama is different, and they all have their own personalities. Overall they are gentle, cooperative, quiet, intelligent, and patient. They are very curious and want to assure themselves that they are safe. When hiking, for example, when they come to something new, they will stop and study it before proceeding.
Are they hard to train?
Llamas learn very quickly. With gentle handling and repetition they develop a strong trust in their trainer. Even young children can easily handle most adult llamas.
The Llama Web has a page Llama Training which has a list of training sessions put on by Marty McGee and John Mallon who both have excellent methods of training. There are a couple of

What Is A Llama? Llamas are members of the Camelid family. Their history dates back thousands of years when their ancestors evolved in North America. These Camelid ancestors evolved into two families: The Camel family of Asia and Africa:
    • Dromedary (1 humped camel) Bactrian (2 humped camels)
...and the Lama family of South America (Yes, only 1 "L") The Lama family consists of four species:
    • Llamas Alpacas Vicuñas Guanacos
Llamas and alpacas have been domesticated in South America for centuries and were of primary importance to the Inca culture where they were used as beasts of burden, food, clothing and a major role in religious ceremonies. (More History of Llamas) Llamas were first imported into the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The most well-known person to import them into the United States was William Randolph Hearst. Only in the past 10 to 15 years have they become popular as pets, pack animals, guard animals, and for other uses. General Llama Information An adult llama stands approximately 3 to 4 feet tall at the shoulders and weighs from 250 to 300 pounds. The average life span of a llama is 15 to 20 years. Llamas are induced ovulators (they do not have a heat cycle like some other animals). Gestation (pregnancy) is an average of 350 days (about 11 and 1/2 months). A female can be safely bred back within 2 to 4 weeks after a normal birth.

A few llamas actually make good pets enjoying more attention andcontact than many llamas seem to. Very easy to handle. Pet llamas.
    http://hurricanecreekllamas.com/sales.html
At Hurricane Creek Llamas my sales philosophy is to match the right llama with the right buyer. I want both my llamas and their new owners to be content with the arrangement. Some llamas make excellent packing companions, others may prove better as a sheep guard or a fiber producer. A few llamas actually make good "pets" ... enjoying more attention and contact than many llamas seem to. Some llamas can "do it all." All llamas I sell are trained to be caught, haltered, and loaded into a livestock trailer easily. New buyers are given introductory training so that they're comfortable performing these tasks with the llama. I also provide a copy of Packing With Llamas or Caring for Llamas as well as additional information on equipment and other resources for new llama owners. It's important to me that buyers get the llama they want, so I sell each llama with a 30-day, money back guarantee, and I am always available for follow-up questions on care and use of the llamas I sell. Llamas are herd-oriented, social creatures. For this reason it is important to keep at least two llamas together, or to have other livestock living with a single llama. For more information and additional resources on the care and maintenance of llamas please visit the Llama Care page.

Llama attacker gets three years in prison
    St. Petersburg Times ; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Jun 21, 2002; ED QUIOCO;
    Abstract:
Eldred and Pettyjohn were charged with the golf-club beating of two pet llamas, sodomizing and killing a nursing mother llama and permanently disfiguring a baby llama during an early morning attack in February 2001. Eldred also was charged with hacking a third llama in the face with a titanium meat cleaver.
At his sentencing Wednesday, Eldred and his attorney, David Parry, blamed Pettyjohn for the attacks and for supplying Eldred with the drugs that both teenagers used while brutalizing the llamas. Parry said Eldred was different from Pettyjohn and that without Pettyjohn, Eldred never would have committed the attacks.
Full Text: Corrections report. "I'm left here thinking, 'Was that his best behavior?' " Shames said. Shames sentenced Eldred to spend the three years in a youthful offender facility so that he can be housed with others his age. Eldred also must undergo treatment for substance abuse and is prohibited from having contact with animals and pets while on probation. The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office recommended that Eldred be sentenced to five years in prison, followed by five years of probation, which is what Pettyjohn received. Eldred was facing a maximum of 15 years in prison for the three counts of felony animal cruelty. "Misdirected defendants cannot set themselves on a course of wanton death and destruction and expect to avoid the consequences," Burgess wrote in a memorandum to the judge. Dressed in a dark blue jail outfit, Eldred wept as bailiffs led him from the courtroom. He turned to his family and mouthed the words "I'm sorry."

ABOUT THE LLAMA Average Height 5 to 6 feet (at the head)
We also have smaller llamas that average 40" at the withers
Average Length 4 to 7 feet Average Weight 200 to 450 pounds Outer Appearance Wool Common Colors Black, Brown, White, Red, Gray, Beige Average Life Span 11 or More Years Attention Needed Regular worming/yearly vaccinations Food Grass, Hay, Leaves, free choice minerals, llama pellets during last stages of pregnancy and lactation. Handling by Children OK Although llamas are not your average house pet, they can be wonderful companions. Natives of South America, llamas have been bred for their luxurious wool, used for farm chores, and been successfully domesticated. Known for their sure footing and strength, llamas have been long revered as excellent pack-carrying animals whose two-toed, soft-padded feet don't damage the environment the way that hooves or hiking boots do. Llamas range anywhere from $200 to $40,000, depending on the role the llama will undertake. Pets (companions) are less expensive than a stud whose potency will effect the future herd. Because there is no standard for llamas, a price of a llama depends largely on conformation, genealogy, a breeders preference, how the animal reproduces, and managing the number of llamas in the herd. Llamas are, however, extremely inexpensive to maintain. Llamas need some room to roam and adequate shelter for colder, hotter, or wetter days, but typically cost less to feed than dogs because of their efficient three-chambered stomachs and low protein requirements. Born grazers, llamas typically nibble on trees and a variety of plants, shrubs, vegetables, and fruits, as well as weeds.

    LLAMAS
Llamas are members of the camelid family. They are native to the South American Andes but originated in North America about 40 million years ago. About 3 million years ago they migrated, those going west became today's camels and those heading south became modern llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicunas. Unfortunately they became extinct here about 12,000 years ago. They have been domesticated for 4,000-5,000 years making them some of the longest domesticated animals. Llamas weigh 18-33 pounds at birth and grow to 250-500 pounds by four years of age. They live 20-25 years, and come in a wide range of colors and various wool types. Llamas can have babies (crias) at any time of the year since they don't have a heat cycle but are induced ovulators. Gestation is approximately 350 days and they are bred back within a couple of weeks with the first breeding occuring at about 18 months of age, though many are now waiting up to three years of age. Llamas are easily transported since they lie down in transit. They have even traveled in the back of station wagons and mini-vans are no problem at all. Llamas don't require large expanses, but should have enough room to romp, an enjoyable sight for the owners.

Aron Clarke is 22 and works at Aquasplash, a pet shop in Reading. He, like many of his colleagues, has a fish tank in his Twyford home. His favourite fish, Kiethy, is six months old and by the time he is fully grown will be about 5ft 6in long. Kiethy is a leopard shark.
At first I was quite nervous about meeting a shark, but Kiethy is quite tame, in a dangerous animal sort of way.
Aron also owns two bearded dragons, lizards to you and me, called Billy and Betty.
Bearded dragons originate from Australia but have been bred in Europe for the last 30 years.
Among them are ferrets Gismo and Sasha-Molly, who have won the Berkshire Ferret Racing Cup for two years running, and her chinchillas have also won numerous best in show awards.
Sally also owns a blue-tongued skink called Dingo, an animal which originates in Australia and will grow to about 2ft long, and a tiger-salamander called Siberia.

    Information EVERYONE Should
    Know Before Buying Llamas! -
    By Niki Anderson-Kuklenski
Llamas are a wonderful lifestyle and if purchased carefully can bring you many years of joy.
    WHERE DO I START?
There is a wide range of uses and prices for llamas. Prior to purchasing a pair (llamas like llama company), a future buyer should do a lot of research. Buy books, search the world wide web, visit farms and ask a lot of questions! DO NOT buy the first llamas you see and don't buy from the first farm you visit. Once the future owner has done a lot of research and visited many farms, they should decide what they want to do with their llamas. People buy them for; pets, 4-H, fiber, packing, livestock guardians, showing, driving, investment and much more. Once the buyer has done their research and narrowed their interest, they are ready to shop.
NOW I AM READY TO SHOP...
    WHY BUY TRAINED LLAMAS?
Even pet quality llamas need to be haltered for shots and need to have their legs touched to do toenails. At the very least your animal should be able to be easily haltered and have their legs lifted to do toenails before you buy them! Ask a seller to let you try halter, leading and picking up this llamas legs, if you cannot easily do this, we recommend you WALK AWAY! Untrained llamas and untrained owners are a bad combination! A restraint chute costs between $500-1000 dollars. Most people don't want to invest in this, so put the money into the training of the animal you buy.

    100. Other Pets
Recently sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and llamas have become popular pets. Exotic petshave exotic needs. Fish need a precise pH and temperature in their water.
    http://www.pethelp.net/opet.html
Finding the right pet for your family is not an easy task. You must consider what goals you have for the experience and how much effort and expense you can afford. Children benefit from the companionship of an animal and from the responsibility of caring for another living being. However, children can't be responsible for the pet’s care without the support of adults. They will not enjoy a pet that becomes a chore, and neither will you. Children should not have to bear the loss or illness of a pet because they were forgetful.
Families sometimes plan to use pets to teach children about reproduction. If you plan to breed your pet, look into the financial burden as well as the time commitment necessary to raise young animals that will make good pets. Consider a visit to the animal shelter to help children understand that we need to find homes for the pets that are already here before we make more. Some humane societies do not have facilities for new born puppies and kittens. You might even foster a pregnant cat or dog through the humane society or check out a video from the library (Milo and Otis) or watch Animal Planet's "That's My Baby". However, the same expense and commitment is involved in sheltering a stray animal as one you purchase. When the babies are adoptable, the animal shelter can help you find good homes for the offspring and offering a home to the mother means you'll be saving a life.
Farm animals and exotic animals imported for the pet trade offer many pet options. If these animals are new imports, check with your local animal shelter to be sure they are permitted in your area. Pocket Pets include hamsters, lizards, birds, fish, and even tarantulas. Recently sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and llamas have become popular pets.
