How to Care for Llamas
Though llamas, native to the Andes of South America, have traditionally been used for pulling carts and guarding sheep, they can be great pets if cared for properly. Steps: Approach llamas with both hands behind your back. Let the llama come to you. Be aware that llamas will spit at you if intimidated or scared. Pet your llama on her back or neck slowly - these animals are head-shy. Keep llamas in a flock or with other flock animals, such as goats or sheep. Provide a large roaming area with a windbreak, such as a row of trees, along with a dust bath area with sandy soil for rolling; the llama will use it to keep her coat in good condition. Feed your llama high-quality hay, along with small amounts of commercial grain specific to your llama's age and activity level. Commercial llama diets are available. Avoid overfeeding. Obesity causes birthing and breeding difficulties.

Local Llamas to Star in TV Show
Reprinted from Steamboat Today News Paper 'Animal Planet' film crew comes to town
Writer Jennifer Bartlett Crew from Animal Planet film a segment of "Pet Story," to air in late July. The children at Christian Heritage School were filmed with llamas Sammy and Dudley, who belong to Diane White-Crane. Photos by Tyler Arroyo/Steamboat Today We may not all love llamas, but there is no doubt that Diane White-Crane does. When she has Sammy and Dudley by her side, her two lovely little llamas, you can bet she feel pretty darn good. "I spend an enormous amount of time with them. All summer long I'm by myself with them in the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness," the self-described "Llama Lady" said. "They're my buddies, my companions, my protectors. White-Crane, Sammy and Dudley also make others feel good and for that reason she was back in Steamboat this week with a film crew. She was being filmed for "Pet Story" - a new show on Animal Planet that explores owner-pet relationships. The catch is not that White-Crane has Sammy and Dudley, but what she does with them. White-Crane sings and tells stories about tolerance, getting along and respect, taking Sammy and Dudley with her in the summer.

Lovable Llamas Pet Power (February/March 1998) "Llamas are very special!" says Candia Midworth, association secretary of the British Llama and Alpaca Association. "I know I'm biased, but people who don't know them soon become fascinated. They're highly intelligent, naturally curious, and surprisingly sensitive - they can be extremely gentle with handicapped children or the elderly for example. They seem to sense that they must treat them with care and respect." There are now around 2,000 llamas in the country, and the association has members from all over the UK and beyond - people from all walks of life ranging in age from the early twenties to seventy or more. Their reasons for keeping llamas are equally varied. Some are farmers seeking to diversify, others own 'pick-your-own' fruit farms or garden centres, and have llamas as an added attraction. Some people keep them for their fibre, or organise treks for ramblers. They can even be a useful publicity tool. One member raises enormous sums for leukemia research by taking his llamas to fêtes and shopping malls. And then there are those who keep llamas for the sheer love of them. Norma Chandler from Winterbourne in South Gloucestershire certainly falls into this category, although it's much more than a hobby. She and her GP husband Richard breed them for sale, exhibit and compete at agricultural shows, sell their wool and organise the occasional trek. "We don't advertise, but if people ring up, we're happy to take them," she says. "We don't do catering, so they have to bring their own picnic. But at least they know they won't have to carry it!"

As an Occupational Therapist, I have a unique opportunity in being able to combine my love of llamas with my profession. Click here to read an article about some of the experiences I've had when I brought my llamas to my job. The Pet Partners Program trains volunteers and screens their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and schools. Training is provided through hands-on workshops taught by Delta-licensed instructors, a home study course and videotape, and a continuing education newsletter. Animals are independently tested for skills and aptitude by Delta-licensed animal evaluators. Through the pet-partner certification process, the pet-partner team can provide animal assisted activities (AAA) or animal assisted therapy (AAT.) Animal-assisted activities are basically the casual "meet and greet" activities that involve pets visiting people. The same activity can be repeated with many people, unlike a therapy program that is tailored to a particular person or medical condition. AAT is a goal-directed intervention in which an animal that meets specific criteria is an integral part of the treatment process. AAT is directed and/or delivered by a health/human service professional with specialized expertise, and within the scope of practice of his/her profession.

2000 Sale Llamas Welcome to Our Squaw Creek Llamas Web site! Our ranch is located near Lander, Wyoming at the base of the Wind River Mountains. We started with our first Llamas in 1985, thus Squaw Creek Llamas was established. We have both domestic and imported bloodlines. Both the "Classic" and "The Heavily Wooled" animals are found on our ranch. The weather in Wyoming can be unpredictable, for this reason, our breeding season is May - September. Llamas, are very easy and enjoyable to care for. They are very efficient in their use of food. Routine medical procedures and vaccinations are easy to maintain and administer. Due to soft pads on their feet, they are easy on the environment. Llamas use "dung piles", which makes clean-up and pasture care less labor intensive. Transportation for a Llama can range from the back of a pick-up truck, inside of a van, or use of a horse trailer. The temperament and behavior of a Llama, we believe, ranges between that of a dog and a cat. They are very smart and learn very quickly. Llamas that receive regular care and attention become affectionate. Their natural instinct of cautious aloofness adds to their beauty and mystique.

    WHAT ARE LLAMAS?
Llamas are a South American beast of burden with a soft woolly fleece. They stand 1 to 1.2m at the back and 1.5 to 2m at the head, weigh 135 to 200kg and live 25 years. Llamas have a long graceful neck, erect ears, large doelike eyes and a keen sense of hearing and smell. The upper lip is cleft with only lower teeth in the front and upper and lower grinding molars in the back. Llamas can be white, black, beige, brown or any combination of these. Llamas are ruminants with three stomachs. They have padded feet with two toes covered by a hard nail. Other exotic animals include South American humpless camels, guanacos, alpacas and African pygmy goats.
WHERE ARE LLAMAS PRODUCED IN BC?
Llamas can be found throughout BC. They are mainly kept in the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland. Their ancestors are from the Andean highlands so llamas are well suited to colder climates and able to adapt to any climate or altitude. By evolving at higher altitudes llamas have a large lung capacity and an ability to use oxygen in the blood more efficiently than other animals.

      Llamas as guardians
Although we have helped to successfully place a number of guard llamas, we do not raise or sell guard llamas ourselves. Ideal traits for a guard llama are counter to ideal companion, packing, and driving traits, and thus can't be effectively (or ethically!) combined into single individuals. Because our time is finite, we can't breed good guardian llamas in fact, we can't possibly maintain any other separate breeding herds in addition to the small breeding herd of high-caliber performance llamas that we already have. If you are interested in acquiring a guardian llama, please contact your local llama breeders (remember to be a smart consumer and get the guarantees you'll need). Also, Llama RescueNet sometimes receives llamas suitable for guarding, but be aware that most are taken quickly you need to fill out and send in an adoption application so that your name will be on file.
