Llamas and Alpacas
Llamas are members of the Camel family. Technically, they are camelids. There are four different camelids. Three are in the genus Lama, the llama, the alpaca, and the guanaco. One is in its own genus vigunae, the vicuna. Llamas have a lifspan of 30 to 50 years. Weights range from 250 to 450 pounds. Height at the head, 5 to 6 1/2 feet. Color. Llamas come in a variety of colors. They can be various shades of brown, black, peach, white, grey, roan, paints, spotted and many other patterns. Coats: Llamas and alpacas have colorful light greaseless wool, which can be used for all types of projects. Shearing or brushing collects it. Camelid wool is different than sheep wool in a number of ways. Camels and camelids have two toed feet, with a toenail sticking out of the end of each toe. However, they walk on a kind of leathery pad, which gives them excellent traction. In addition, this characteristic means that llamas can "cruise" delicate woodlands with little or no damage to the environment.

Pets B uckhorn Llama Co., Inc. maintains a pool of male llamas that typically numbers around 150. Of this number, approximately 75 are trained pack llamas (mostly gelded) varying in age from 5-20 years old. The other 75 males range from weanling age to four years old and are in various stages of training and evaluation. We sell from all strata of the entire population and typically have animals of all specifications available for sale. F O ur experience using llamas as pack animals is unparalleled in the llama industry both in scope and volume of experience. We are currently doing guided treks (15-20/yr), recreational leases (75/yr), business leases (outfitter/guides, USFS, NPS, Fish and Wildlife Service, professional photographers, surveyors, and biologists), wilderness trail construction contracts, contract freighting and drop camps. We have instructed and supported leases for demanding situations running the gamut from a five day wilderness trek for 12 blind hikers (Annual Trek for Light Program) to a four day instruction for 34 Special Forces Green Berets focused on weapons system transport, combat management, and night travel/recon. T he scope of our experience has allowed us to develop an accurate set of standards of what is a reasonable expectation or level of performance (what are llamas in general capable of doing?) and what is exceptional behavior, both good and bad (how is a specific llama going to perform?)

Are you having a problem training your owners? Getting along with your pasture-mates? Getting that certain stud's attention? Just send your problems to Cappy at this address and I'll try to answer your questions right here.
Dear Cappy,
You see, I really like my mistress but yesterday I charged her. I weigh 350 lbs and I don't think she does. I didn't actually hurt her but I scared her to death. Now she doesn't want to come out and play! I know you read Ann Landers, and my mistress was hoping you'd give me some advice on what to do with me. She doesn't like my suggestions or Pop's either, and really doesn't want to sell me, but I think she's afraid I'll play rough again. (Why did I do that anyway? Is it testosterone or spring fever? Should I tell her not to worry? I think she's having trouble with trust issues.)
Please help us if you can! Thanks, Cappy!!!!!
Dear Appaloosa,
I hope I have helped out somewhat. It's very hard to evaluate when I can't see the exact situation, but it does sound like a serious problem and not one that should be overlooked by you or your mistress. If you need to talk again, or would like to talk with my owner, just drop us another note. We're as near as your keyboard. By the way, you didn't tell me your name. I'm thinking of you and wish you the best! Lots of Huuummmmms

Your are in the LLama Section LLAMAS Llamas are very calm and gentle animals.
But they don't seem to be real friendly. They need to earn peoples trust. This could take a while.
We got Becky (white Llama) at an animal auction.
She is very friendly.
We got Starsky and Hutch from a Llama farm called Reiland Farms in Tionesta Pa. These people are very helpful and informative with any questions I had about them.. The Llamas they sell are very healthy and beautiful llamas.
All our Llamas get along great with Sybil and Oscar.
but for some reason, Starsky (the darker Llama)
really likes sybil. Sometimes he will follow her and just stand over her.

Baby LLama ... Becky OUR EXPERIENCE WITH LLAMAS When we first got these llamas, we would keep them penned up with 3 cows. Everyone got along fine. But the only problem was the cows would go in the llama house and make a mess.. so this was added work for us to clean cow manure in all the houses everyday and replace the straw.. Llamas are very clean animals. they don't dirty their house. they go outside and create what is called a dung pile This makes our maintenance very easy.. Also, Llama manure is excellent for gardens.

recently imported into the UK by Roseland Llamas Llamas ... Llamas are fascinating and enchanting animals: perfect to graze and grace your land be it for farm diversification, a business enterprise, or purely for pleasure.
Llamas make delightful field pets whether just a small group in a paddock or a herd for parkland. Llamas are easy to look after, good with children, safe with pets, and fine company for horses and other livestock. Llama breeding, llama trekking, and llama wool all offer worthwhile commercial opportunities: ideal for land owners and farmers wishing to diversify or improve their return on under- utilised land, and for tourism initiatives
Llamas can also be selected to offer effective protection against predators - looking after flocks of sheep or goats, and even free-range poultry and ducks.

Smoking is Hazardous to Your Pets

by Carole Sanders The other day I received an email from a friend who had been very instrumental in getting smoking banned on airplanes. The following will hopefully give those who are still determined to ignore the proof of the danger of smoking and the second hand smoke they subject everyone to, including their pets, the best reason in the world to quit this horrible addiction. NDSU Extension Service Llamas are one of four main species of New World camelids. The other three species are the alpaca, guanaco and vicuna. These species are thought to have originated from a common ancestor that came across the Bering Strait land bridge. Camelids are thought to be related to Bactrian and Dromedary camels of Asia. The high dependence of Incan Indians of South America on llamas and alpacas for food and fiber is analogous to the Plains Indians of North America and their relationship to the bison. Incas carried their relationship with llamas a step further through domestication and controlled breeding for beasts of burden. With the collapse of Incan culture, llamas were nearly pushed into extinction and only survived in the harsh upper regions of their natural territory. The last 25 years have seen a resurgence of interest in llamas, especially in the United States.
Physical Attributes
Llamas come in a range of colors and body shapes although these differences are just variations in type and not of breed. Llamas may be brown, red, black or white or a combination of these colors. Llamas can be short, broad and wooly or tall and large-framed with short wool. There is no specific nomenclature to refer to different classifications of llamas other than males, females and babies. Breeding males are sometimes referred to as studs and babies as

funloving, sensitive, playful, patient, enjoy animals and nature, THEN llamas areprobably for you. Whether you want a couple of geldings as pets or packers
http://www.rockisland.com/~castalia/cllama.html
Break Out of Frames Castalia, where llamas and unicorns play... Castalia was a nymph pursued by Apollo. She was turned into a spring (heavy magic) flowing into Delphi, at the base of Mount Parnassus. This spring was ever after the sacred place of Apollo and the Muses. Castalia is still a sacred place. In the early morning mist unicorns mingle with llamas, and when the moon is bright and full you can see them dancing with devas, sprites, fairies... I'm Chelle and Castalia Llamas is my passion and joy. I started raising llamas in 1989 and brought an extensive background in training and owning horses to this enterprise. We're located in the beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington state. The farm (tiny as it is) is 5 miles from the ferry dock in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. We love visitors, but please email first for a rendezvous because my schedule is fairly hectic. Not everyone should own llamas. If you are fun-loving, sensitive, playful, patient, enjoy animals and nature, THEN llamas are probably for you. Whether you want a couple of geldings as pets or packers or for gathering wool OR a breeding quality 'bellringer' to improve your herd, I usually have someone available. If I don't have 'who' you need, I can probably steer you in the direction of someone who does. I will not sell only one llama unless you have another at home. I feel we all need kindred spirits to be truly happy. My bloodlines include English, Canadian, Chilean and North American. My breeding goals are and have been for large, correct, genetically sound, fine fibered llamas with sweet dispositions. Many of my llamas come in the house and are gentle loveybears. All of my breeding stock sells with a guarantee and I'm always available for consultation.
