All About Lizards
Lizards are members of the class Reptilia and the order Squamata, along with snakes, worm lizards, and the Tuatara. The lizard suborder Sauria, with 3750 species, is the most successful group of living reptiles. The Sauria are further divided into four infraorders, Iguana (Iguanas), Gekkota (Geckos), Scincomorpha (Skinks), and Anguinomorpha (snake-like lizards), each containing several families.
Digestive System
The teeth of lizards are generally attached to the sides of the mandible without sockets. these teeth are regularly shed and replaced.
The only venomous species of lizards are the Gila Monster and the Mexican beaded lizard. These species have grooved rather than hollow teeth which have no direct connection to the venom glands. The venom glands are sublingual. Venom flows from the glands along the dental grooves and is injected by chewing action. The venom is primarily neurotoxic in nature.
The tongue of the lizard varies with the species. In general it is mobile and protrusible. Taste buds are poorly developed. Protrusion of the tongue is primarily for bringing scent particles to the Jacobson's organ for olfaction. The tongue is projectile for food gathering in chameleons. In green iguanas, the tip of the tongue is darker than the rest and should not be mistaken for a lesion. The stomach of lizards is simple, usually elongated, and not gizzard-like. Swallowing stones to aid digestion is not a normal behavior.

Researchers find a pattern in evolution of lizard groups By Tony Fitzpatrick Courtesy photo Biologists at Washington University in St. Louis studying groups of lizards have proposed a general pattern among groups in the timing of evolutionary diversification. What was most surprising to the researchers was that, despite the many differences among the four lizard groups, a strong overall relationship was found between the two aspects of evolutionary diversification. "This correlation was a big surprise," said Losos. "The general worldview is that the history of each lineage is unique and due to varying circumstances so that no general pattern exists. Our findings tend to dispute that." The results were published in the August 15, 2003 issue of Science magazine. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation. To reach their conclusions, the researchers produced a detailed genetic phylogeny (think of a branching family tree) for all species and physical data for the different species body types. Co-author James A. Schulte, Ph.D., a former member of the Losos and Larson laboratories, now a post-doctoral researcher at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, gathered much of the phylogenetic and morphological data. Washington university graduate student Luke Harmon, the lead author on the paper, created a statistical program that uses phylogenies derived from genetic information (DNA sequences) from each species to estimate the patterns of branching and morphological change in each group.

Contact us In this impressive reference book, Lourdes Rodriguez Schettino covers nearly every aspect of the 62 currently known iguanid species living in Cuba, including the iguana, the curly-tailed lizards, giant anoles, chameleons, and other anoline lizards. Drawing on more than 20 years of herpetological fieldwork and more than 350 bibliographical sources, most of them Cuban, she fills a major void in the literature on Caribbean herpetofauna by summarizing existing knowledge of this dominant group of reptiles on the largest island in the West Indies.

Title: Living Dragons: A Natural History of the World's Monitor Lizards Author: Rodney Steel Reviewed by: Raymond Hoser About Amazon.com Reprinted from the Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Society [32(12):255-256, December 1997] I tell everyone I like death adders ( Acanthophis antarcticus ) more than any other reptile on earth. Well now I'm about to let a secret out of the closet. I cried and cried when forced to relinquish my seven lace monitors ( Varanus varius ) in the early 1980s, when my parents sold the family house. Although the lizards went to a good home, they were truly pets in the real sense of the wordmore like dogs and cats than a "reptile." Some of them were even thought to be older than I was! I'd actually inherited some from another man who'd suffered the same fate as me some years earlier. School teacher John Baker caught four adult lace monitors at Bingarra, northwest New South Wales, in the 1960s and kept them at his suburban Sydney home until his parents sold it in the mid-1970s. He knew I'd just built a massive goanna pit at my St. Ives house so he gave me his beloved pets to guard with my life. Nearly ten years later I was doing the same thing. This time these lizards were being passed on to herpetologist Ken Sheppherd to guard with his life. If I had my time again, I'd never have let the lizards go, but then again if I had kept them, they would probably have been taken with the rest of my collection, when it was stolen in July 1984.

Gerrhosaurus The Gerrhosaurus are native to southern and eastern Africa. There are six species found in dry, rocky semi-open habitats. Frequently found in termite mounds. The species range in size from 40-70 cm (16-28"). Their powerfully-built bodies are only slightly flattened and are supported on relatively delicate-looking legs, much like our own Alligator lizards ( Gerrhonotus ). The neck is not well differentiated from the head. The tail is typically twice the length of the body. Scales are evenly arrayed in lines down and around the body. Dorsal scales are keeled while the ventral scales are smooth; little overlapping. Colors are various shades of brown with some lighter longitudinal stripes. A fold of skin is generally noted running laterally along the length of the body - this allows for expansion. The plateds become rather tame fairly quickly. While they appear cumbersome and slow, they are capable of movement and, when acclimated, feed well. Some may eventually take small amounts of dog food mixed in their salad which can be used as an occasional supplement to whole prey.
