Description
The descriptive name for this slender creature is appropriate. When caught this reptile will energetically twist and jump trying to escape, and in the process may shed its tail which can break into many pieces, hence the name slender glass lizard. Also called the glass snake or legless lizard, the slender glass lizard has a pointed snout, narrow head, and a long cylindrical body with no limbs. Because of its snake-like appearance the slender glass lizard is often mistaken for a snake. The slender glass lizard differs from a true snake in that it has eyelids and external ear openings, which snakes lack. In Wisconsin the average total length is 18-24 inches (45-61 cm), although an animal may reach up to 36 inches (91 cm), two-thirds of which may be tail. The slender glass lizard's body is tan, brown or bronze. A dark brown to black stripe runs along the middle of the back from head to tail. Two additional dark brown to black stripes run immediately above the lateral groove and four narrow stripes run below the groove. The side of the head and neck have scattered brown markings. The underside is white to light yellow.

Endangered Species in North America
Panthera uncia
Ocelot (Felis pardalis) The ocelot is a small to medium-sized spotted cat, weighing 17 to 30 lbs. They range from U.S.A. (AZ, TX) to Central and South America. Males tend to have larger ranges. They are found in humid tropical and subtropical forest, coastal mangroves, swampy savannas, and semi-arid scrub . Life span 8 - 11 years. Females usually begin estrus after age 2. Gestation ranges from 80 to 90 days. Litter size is usually 1 or 2 kittens but may be up to 4. They eat small to medium sized mammals and birds, but also reptiles, fish, and invertebrates. They are threaten by habitat destruction, trapping, and poaching have brought this cat to endangered status. The lack of adequate protection is keeping this cat from recovery. New Mexico Ridge-nosed Rattlesnake (Crotalus willardi obscurus) California tiger salamander (Ambystoma californiense) The California tiger salamander requires seasonal ponds, or vernal pools, for successful breeding. The species breeds during the winter rainy season, but spends the majority of the year in underground refuges. The California tiger salamander is on the brink of extinction primarily due to habitat destruction due to urban and agricultural development, fragmentation, road mortality, introduced species, and agricultural contaminants. Adult California tiger salamanders migrate to breeding pools on rainy nights in early winter. They lay approximately 400 to 1,300 eggs per breeding season. The eggs hatch in 10 to14 days, and larvae feed on algae, small crustaceans, and mosquito larvae for about 6 weeks after hatching, when they switch to larger prey. California tiger salamanders usually do not breed for the first time until they reach 4 to 6 years of age.

They grab the neck of their opponent with their jaws and then roll over and over each other, until one, usually the smaller lizard, retreats. Statistics Length: can be anywhere between 15-24cm long, although are usually between 18 and 20cm. Females are generally longer than the males Physical Description Sand lizards are stocky and short-legged, with short heads, blunt snouts and short tails. The background colour of females is pale grey to light brown, with a creamy white belly and a pattern of brown markings running along the back and flanks. The markings are sometimes filled with a white patch. Males are typically brown-black with a darker central stripe, but with similar marking to females. Males also have green sides, which become brighter during the breeding season, and pale green undersides. Distribution Sand lizards range throughout most of Europe, but are rare in Britain. They are absent from western and southern France, southern Italy and the Balkans.

33% of nests may fail due to predation by rats, feral cats, and monitor lizards. Conservation Efforts The Mariana Crow was listed as endangered by Guam in 1979
http://pacificislands.fws.gov/wesa/crowmariaindex.html
Mariana Crow Corvus kubaryi / Aga
The Mariana Crow is a small black crow with a slight greenish-black gloss on its head, back, underparts, and wings. Its tail has a bluish-black gloss. Females are smaller than the males.
The Mariana Crow is also known as the aga in Chamorro, one of the native languages of the Mariana Islands. This crow prefers native limestone forest for breeding and foraging, but it will forage in other habitats such as beach strand vegetation and coconut groves. This species is an omnivorous, opportunistic feeder that is known to feed on insects, lizards, bird eggs, hermit crabs, fruits, and seeds.
The remnant population on Guam is restricted in distribution to the northern end of the island, where it most frequently nests in two canopy-emergent tree species, Elaeocarpus joga and Ficus prolixa . The population on Rota is distributed islandwide, where it has been found to nest in 18 native genera, most of which are subcanopy in height. The reason for this difference in nest site selection between Guam and Rota is unknown.

Mallee worm-lizard - proposed endangered species listing
NSW Scientific Committee - preliminary determination The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Preliminary Determination to support a proposal to list the Mallee Worm-lizard Aprasia inaurita Kluge, 1974 as an ENDANGERED SPECIES in Part 1 of Schedule 1 of the Act, and as a consequence, to omit reference to the Mallee Worm Lizard Aprasia inaurita Kluge, 1974 from Schedule 2 (Vulnerable species) of the Act. Listing of endangered species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act. The Scientific Committee has found that: 1. The Mallee Worm-lizard, Aprasia inaurita , is a burrowing legless-lizard that reaches a total length of approximately 20cm. The forelimbs of the Mallee Worm-lizard are entirely absent and vestigial hindlimbs occur as small scaly flaps near the cloacal vent. Individuals are pale olive-brown or grey-brown above, the head and nape are often reddish-brown and the terminal portion of the tail is bright reddish-orange (Cogger 2000). 2. The Mallee Worm-lizard is distributed in a narrow band from south-east Western Australia, through southern South Australia, the north-west corner of Victoria and south-western New South Wales (Cogger 2000). In NSW, the species is known from nine locations in two disjunct areas: seven locations clustered between Balranald and Wentworth, and two records from near Rankin Springs. Three of these locations are in conservation areas, Mallee Cliffs National Park and Gubbata and Pulletop Nature Reserves.

Bardick - endangered species listing
NSW Scientific Committee - final determination The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the Bardick Echiopsis curta (Schlegel 1837) as an ENDANGERED SPECIES in Part 1 of Schedule 1 of the Act, and as a consequence, to omit reference to the Bardick, Echiopsis curta (Schlegel, 1837) from Schedule 2 (Vulnerable species) of the Act. Listing of endangered species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act. The Scientific Committee has found that: 1. The Bardick, Echiopsis curta is a small snake, reaching a maximum body length of approximately 60cm (Wilson and Knowles 1988, Swan 1990, Cogger 2000). They are unusually heavy-bodied for a small elapid, having a large head distinct from the neck, a stout body and a short tail (Shine 1982). They vary in colour from grey-brown, olive-brown, reddish-brown to a rich brown above, and pale grey-brown below (Swan 1990, Cogger 2000). The head usually has some scattered pale flecks, the throat and anterior ventrals are richly specked with white and brown, and the lips are spotted with white (Swan 1990, Cogger 2000). 2. The Bardick is widely distributed from the coast and interior of south-western Western Australia, through southern Australia to western Victoria and south-western New South Wales (Cogger 2000). There is broad agreement that the population found east of the Flinders Ranges, including south-eastern South Australia, north-western Victoria and south-western NSW, is disjunct from populations to the west (Wilson and Knowles 1988, Cogger 2000).

General characteristics
The Yellow Monitor has a snout-vent length 500-515 mm, tail 575-600 mm. The dorsum reddish brown, body and tail barred with alternating dark-edged reddish brown and dirty yellow bars, ventrum light yellow. Biology: Breeding activity is observed from April to June; 15-30 eggs are laid in burrows. There is no evidence that they lay eggs in termite mounds. Theobald (1868 in Riley et al 1985) must be referring to the Bengal monitor when he claims that monitor lizards oviposit in termitaria in Burma. Eggs are probably deposited in burrows in elevated areas to avoid the possibility of nest flooding (Das, pers. comm.). In India hatchlings appear in March. Equal numbers of males and females have been reported, but males appear to be more active during the mating season.

Note: This species is extirpated in Canada.
Basic Characteristics of a Reptile Reptiles are a diverse group with a wide array of extinct lineages represented today by lizards, snakes, turtles, and crocodiles. Reptiles have several adaptations for terrestrial living not generally found in amphibians including the shelled egg and a waterproof skin. Scales Scales containing the protein keratin waterproof the skin of a reptile, helping to prevent dehydration in dry air. Keratinized skin (skin that has been transformed into a tough fibrous outermost layer) is the vertebrate equivalent of the chitinized cuticle of insects and the waxy cuticle of land plants. Because it cannot breathe through its dry skin, a reptile must obtain all of its oxygen with its lungs. Reproduction Although viviparous reptiles exist (reptiles that give birth to live young), most species lay eggs on land; parchmentlike shells prevent them from drying out. The embryo develops in the fluid of an amniotic sac within the egg. The evolution of the amniote egg, a shelled egg with a self-contained "pond" of amniotic fluid, enabled vertebrates to complete their life cycles on land and sever their last ties with their aquatic origins. Fertilization in reptiles must occur internally, before the shell is secreted as the egg passes through the reproductive tract of the female. Cold-blooded Animals Reptiles are sometimes labeled "cold-blooded" animals because they do not use their

The Short-horned Lizard is on the Provincial Red List CDC= G5 SH According to COSEWIC , it has been designated Extirpated (X) in 1992. Image Credits: sketch in Reptiles of British Columbia , Gregory and Campbell, 1984. Historical facts The Short-horned Lizard has not been positively identified in British Columbia since 1898. It is most likely that this population was a peripheral isolate and that is now extirpated from British Columbia. Distinguishing features Another common name for the Short-horned Lizard is Pygmy Horned Lizard. It is a short, small, and flattened lizard whose back, sides, and upper part of legs are covered with small spines. The head bears short dagger-like spines at the rear fringe and spines along each side between legs. The length of their bodies is up to about 75 mm in adults with tail about half as long as body; females slightly larger than males. The head is short and approximately as broad as long; legs short. Males have enlarged postanal scutes on underside, and usually broader tail base than females.
