Wisconsin has many museums for people to visit. Our museums show the history of Wisconsin and the many important things that have happened here. A museum is open to the public. There are all kinds of amazing things in museums. Lots of important things have happened in Wisconsin and we are the leader in many things. We had the first kindergarten, made the first ice cream sundae, had the first car race, had the first state flag in outer space, and were the first state to make wearing a seat belt in the car a law. The first kindergarten was started at Watertown, WI, in 1856 by Margarethe Schurz, a German immigrant. She thought it was important that children start school early. It was the start of kindergartens all over the United States.

The Horse Living Museum in Chantilly
Dating back to the kings of France, the beautiful and large forests north of Paris such as Compiègne and Chantilly are an ideal destination for a rest out of Paris. They are particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves are yellow and red. In addition to the beauty of nature, these forests also have an entrenched equine tradition. Chantilly, a charming little town north of Charles de Gaulle airport, has a forest, a castle, a racetrack and, close to the track, spectacular 18th century horse stables. In 1982, they were turned into the Horse Living Museum by Yves Bienaimé, a passionate professional horseback rider. The museum's unique concept makes it a must for lovers of horses and art. It is indeed a museum, but it is at the same time a place for horses and horseback riders. Go there to look at art inspired by horses, horse shows, horse training and horse equipment.

Educational Programs at ISM - Springfield
The Museum has a comprehensive suite of school and public educational programming in place to educate the public about the natural history, anthropology, fine art, and decorative art of Illinois. The philosophy of the education program is multi-fold: to serve as an interpretive link to the Museum's exhibits and collections thus bringing these resources to life; to stimulate learning at all age levels - from preschoolers to Elderhostel participants; to cultivate a relationship with segments of the comm unity not traditionally served by museums; to share our educational resources, the expertise of our curators, the many objects in our collections, and other items with the broader education community of Illinois. Combined, the elements of this philosophy create a dynamic, audience-sensitive approach to educational programming.
Research Programs
Illinois State Museum researchers investigate the climate, landforms, plants, animals, and human cultures of the Midwestern United States with a special emphasis on Illinois. Research illuminates long-term changes in natural environments and human societ ies and provides interdisciplinary perspectives of the rich natural and cultural history of the state.

Fact Sheet
Conservatory of Flowers: A Living Museum Introduction
San Francisco's beloved Conservatory of Flowers is reopening to the public eight years after a pacific storm with winds of over 100 mph severely damaged this jewel-like Victorian greenhouse. After the storm, spontaneous donations from private citizens kick started what would become a $25 million rehabilitation effort. When the Conservatory reopens on September 20, 2003, the public will not only find a beautifully restored building, but a transformed institution as well. An extraordinary $4 million interior program of horticultural and botanical displays have been created to inspire visitors young and old to appreciate and conserve this earth's extraordinary biodiversity and tropical flora. History
Opened in 1879, the wood and glass greenhouse is the oldest existing conservatory in the Western Hemisphere and has attracted millions of visitors to Golden Gate Park since it first opened its doors. It is designated as a city, state and national historic landmark and was one of the 100 most endangered sites of the World Monuments Fund. It is a civil engineering landmark as well, serving as one of the few examples of a Victorian-era prefabricated building. The original kit of parts for the building belonged to James Lick, a wealthy businessman who made his fortune in real estate, who ordered the greenhouse for his San Jose estate. Unfortunately, Lick died before it was ever erected. Put up for sale by his trustees, the kit was purchased in 1878 by a group of prominent San Franciscans who offered it to the City of San Francisco for use in Golden Gate Park.
