Young scientist works to protect livestock from exotic diseases
    18 September 2003
A framework to protect Australia’s valuable livestock industries from exotic disease outbreaks, such as the catastrophic 2001 outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the United Kingdom, will be developed by one of the winners of the 2003 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Peter West, winner of the award sponsored by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), will study the framework used by authorities in the UK to manage the 2001 FMD outbreak and then adapt that framework to suit Australian conditions. Peter said the Science and Innovation Award is a timely opportunity for him to utilise the skills and experience he has developed to improve Australia's readiness for exotic disease emergencies. “This is a fantastic opportunity to learn first-hand from the strengths and weaknesses of others to improve our current emergency response capabilities,” he said. “Australian industry will gain from the transfer of valuable skills from collaborating with foreign organisations, developing technology to meet rising demands, and modifying tested procedures to suit Australian circumstances.”

Livestock conference tackles tough questions
Monday, 8 July, 2002 HOW do we feed and clothe ourselves without it costing our environment? How do we manage a good life for an animal that also means a good profit for the farmer? These issues are at the heart of the 24th Australian Society of Animal Production (ASAP) conference, being held this week in Adelaide (July 7-11). The theme is "Finding the balance: profitability with responsibility". He said the conference, at the Adelaide Festival Centre, was addressing many of the big issues that some of the more specialist societies and conferences don't deal with. One of those issues is sustainability. Professor Hynd said the cost of past and current agricultural practices was indisputable. "The cost to the environment is evident not only in biophysical deterioration, such as the cancerous growth of soil salinity, acidity and erosion and declining water quality, but also in the deterioration of our rural communities," he said. "As we enter the new millennium we must address the environmental costs of our current practices and an increasingly urbanised population that has lost its sense of ownership of its role in creating unsustainable agricultural practices."

Australian Trade Minister, Mark Vaile
Livestock exports to Saudi Arabia suspended
The Australian Government has suspended further shipments of livestock to Saudi Arabia pending the negotiation of an effective mechanism to ensure the safe entry of livestock to the country. This decision follows the rejection of a shipment of 57,000 Australian sheep by Saudi authorities. Saudi Arabia's quarantine officials at the Port of Jeddah alleged that some 6 per cent of the animals in the shipment were affected by scabby mouth. By contrast, the assessment of the experienced AQIS-approved Australian veterinarian on board the MV Cormo Express , was that fewer than 200 sheep, or 0.35 per cent of the shipment, were affected. This number is well below the 5 per cent tolerance level agreed between Saudi Arabia and Australia. In light of this major discrepancy, a delegation consisting of the Australian Ambassador and senior officials from the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS), met in Riyadh on 26 August with the Saudi Arabian Minister of Agriculture to request a second veterinary inspection, and to discuss ways in which better communication and clearer guidelines might assist the livestock trade. The Australian Government has called in the Saudi Charge d’ Affaires to express its concern with the Saudi decision.

  • In 2000 non-caged eggs accounted for 8% of all eggs sold, in 2003 it was 12.8%. This is a very positive result and shows consumers moving away from caged eggs towards barn laid eggs.
Monies raised from the barn laid egg program are used to fund National Inspectors who ensure the egg producers are meeting the standards set. Money is also used to promote barn laid eggs to further increase demand.
The RSPCA is proud of our product accreditation of barn laid eggs, it is making a difference.

RALEIGH - Participating in the N.C. State Fair livestock shows has been a rite of passage for siblings Brittany and Trey Denning of Bentonville. Three generations of the Denning family have grown up showing livestock at the N.C. State Fair and have also participated in Johnston County 4-H. Their grandfather, Norman Denning Sr. began showing hogs at the fair 55 years ago and father, Norman Denning Jr. started showing when he was 10 years old. Like their father, Brittany and Trey began showing livestock at an early age. Brittany, 14, won the 2001 Johnston County Fair grand champion and reserve champion market level hog categories of the 4-H junior livestock competitions. She has also placed in competitions at the State Fair and is still trying for top honors.

Junior livestock auctions bring a total of $49,000 for youths
RALEIGH - Junior livestock champion and reserve champion winners took home a total of $49,000 at the N.C. State Fair Junior Livestock Auction, Saturday, Oct. 19, with Harris Teeter Supermarkets placing the winning bids on all grand and reserve champion steers, barrows, lambs, and turkeys. "The youngsters showing these animals are the real winners today, because they receive the prize money as well as having pride in knowing they raised blue-ribbon animals," said Agriculture Commissioner Meg Scott Phipps, who presided over the auction. "The total amount of money raised during the auction exceeds last year's totals by almost $9,000, and I want to thank Harris Teeter for its winning bids." Harris Teeter will donate the products from the livestock auction to the Food Bank of North Carolina. They will also collaborate with the Poultry Science Club at N.C. State University to donate the turkey products to Raleigh Urban Ministries.

An excellent book on a controversial TV channel Raving Reviews Accurate All the reviews I've read for this book have been unequivocally complimentary. One newspaper said it should be required reading for Bush's entire cabinet! Quite bold, but rightly so. After reading this book, I came to the realization that everything Al-Jazeera is courageous enough to air, my own country's media is petrified of. I wonder why our government is so afraid of a democratic Arab world? While the dozens of titles coming out on the Middle East are regurgitating the same history and concepts, this book is a refreshing new look at a MODERN Middle East, not a primitive and orientalized one. Very enlightening The Missing Times Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (10 February, 2001)

  • Antibiotics became widely available in the 1940s and have been hailed as miracle drugs, magic bullets able to eliminate bacteria without doing much harm to the cells of treated individuals.
  • Antimicrobial agents (antibiotics and related medicinal products) have transformed our ability to treat many infectious diseases that were previously killers.
  • In 1954, two million pounds of antibiotics were produced in the U.S. Today, according to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 50 million pounds of antibiotics are produced in the U.S. each year.
  • Close to half the antibiotics now used in the U.S. are used in agriculture, including many antibiotics designed to treat human illness. Antibiotics are used in agriculture to stimulate growth in livestock, and to reduce incidence of disease caused by crowded, factory-farm conditions.
  • The Union of Concerned Scientists, which advocates against overuse of antibiotics, says that livestock use accounts for 70 percent of total antibiotic use in America. The Animal Health Institute , a trade group representing drug companies, maintains that only 36 percent of antibiotics are used on animals.
