Alberta-Canada Livestock Welfare Research Partnership
Governments of Canada and Alberta Media Release EDMONTON, March 27, 2002 A new Alberta-Canada Livestock Welfare Research Partnership (ACLWRP) to support new research based at the federal Lacombe Research Centre was announced today in Edmonton by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lyle Vanclief and Alberta's Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Shirley McClellan.
The two governments are partners in the project along with Alberta Farm Animal Care Association (AFAC). "This partnership is a great example of cooperation in research and promotion of animal health and well-being," said Mr. Vanclief. "Successful partnerships such as the ACLWRP will help us brand Canada as the world leader in environmentally-responsible production, innovation and food safety." Mrs. McClellan said animal welfare is a priority in the province. "We already have a high standard of farm animal care plus one of the strongest pieces of legislation in Canada, the Animal Protection Act. However it is important to better understand factors influencing livestock welfare and to implement proactive changes based on sound science. Both the industry and consumers will benefit from this new research," said Mrs. McClellan. Four research categories have been identified for study under the partnership: husbandry practices, disease, non-invasive procedures for measuring stress, and environment. Scientists will evaluate such areas as transport, handling, early detection of sick animals and reduced use of antibiotics; and livestock housing.

More livestock could help farmers - study
By STEPHEN BORNAIS More cows, goats and sheep producing more manure has been suggested as a way to save the soil supporting Nova Scotians farms. A report released yesterday by GPI Atlantic, a Halifax non-profit research group, said increasing the number of livestock raised on farms in the province could add millions to incomes, and improve soil quality. Soil is eroding six times faster than it can replenish itself, the report said, with quality worsened by the loss of organic matter and the planting of more soil-degrading crops such as corn and potatoes. All this costs farmers money to repair, threatening the future of Nova Scotia farms and potentially reducing food quality, the report concluded. In the past decade, the area of land used to grow potentially soil-degrading crops has increased 30 per cent. And since 1971, numbers of livestock on crop-growing farms have dwindled. GPI researcher and report author Jennifer Scott estimates these developments cost more than $11.5 million yearly in lost income on farms.

Media release 8 July 2003
Statewide livestock survey results reflect farmers’ determination to survive drought: Macdonald
Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Ian Macdonald today announced the results of a statewide stock survey, describing them as indicative of the determination of the state’s farmers to survive the current drought. Mr Macdonald said the surveys were conducted in April as a joint effort by Rural Lands Protection Board (RLPB) and NSW Agriculture staff, involving over 4,700 rural landholders and resulting in the most comprehensive assessment to date of the impact of the drought on livestock numbers. “Feedback received during the survey indicates that livestock owners held on to their stock as long as possible, exhausting their available fodder reserves and drawing heavily on other financial resources,” he said. “As a result, the drop in livestock numbers at this stage of this severe drought is not as large as might have been expected. “It also means these results do not really reflect the extent of the personal impact this drought has had on our farming community.

Directory Looking Backward and Forward The Deep Ecology Platform Visionaries, Friends and Colleagues ... The Way Ahead Considerable portions of each year's budget are dedicated to in-house book projects in one or more program areas and to supporting authors, journals, radio series, and advertising campaigns covering critical issues either poorly reported on or not even understood by the mainstream press. Large photo books such as Clearcut Fatal Harvest and Welfare Ranching are conceived and executed as discrete projects under the Foundation's direction. Today's publishing economy is particularly short on promotion budgets for such subjects, and often books on eco-philosophy, ecological worldviews and environmental issues are produced in small quantities. The Foundation has supported the publicity, promotion and distribution of books deemed important to its mission, especially in the area of environmental ethics and philosophy. Subsidizing advertising, book tours, and promotions can build interest and help bring a greater number of important ideas to more readers. In terms of broadcast media, the Foundation generally does not fund television, video, or film but prefers radio formats instead. A number of series and individual programs have resulted from working with independent radio producers. Radio has proven particularly good at reaching a well-educated audience interested in advancing their understanding of complex issues such as globalization, ecocentric thought, and megatechnology.
