The pump can now push out a mixture of air and water directly into the skimmer body! Resulting in a 20% increase in flow and air input! Livestock genetics and genomics Objective Animal genetic resources have evolved in diverse environments and carry unique combinations of genes that define productive and adaptive capabilities, which can contribute to sustainable agriculture in low-input production systems. About one-third of the 4000 breeds of livestock world-wide risk extinction. Disease is a major factor limiting livestock productivity in large areas of the tropics and subtropics. The objectives of this project are to document the characteristics of and genetic diversity among indigenous livestock breeds of developing countries, to identify genes controlling tolerance of trypanosomes and resistance to helminths, to design breeding programmes to improve disease resistance and overall productivity in low-input environments, and foster conservation of indigenous breeds. This project is also characterising indigenous sheep and goat breeds in Africa and Southeast Asia which are genetically resistant to gastrointestinal nematode parasites and developing and testing sustainable, integrated endoparasite control strategies. 173. Methane Emissions From Livestock
A few facts about animal emissions.
http://www.ciesin.org/TG/AG/liverear.html
CIESIN Thematic Guides
Methane Emissions from Livestock
The domestic animal population has increased by 0.5 to 2.0 percent per day during the last century, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report Policy Options for Stabilizing Global Climate (Lashof and Tirpak 1990). Figure 4-14 of the report shows the upward trend in domestic animal populations. One result of this population increase is that emissions from livestock have become a significant source of atmospheric methane. In fact, domestic animals currently account for about 15 percent of the annual anthropogenic methane emissions. Much of the world's livestock are ruminantssuch as sheep, goats, camel, cattle, and buffalowho have a unique, four-chambered stomach. In the chamber called the rumen, bacteria break down food and generate methane as a by-product. The production rate is affected by factors such as quantity and quality of feed, body weight, age, and exercise, and varies among animal species as well as among individuals of the same species. Chapter 4 of the EPA report provides an overview of livestock methane emissions.

Evaluating Predation by Dogs
Domestic dogs can be a serious problem where they are permitted to run at large, particularly near urban areas. True feral dogs and coydogs (coyote-dog hybrids) are also a problem but are far less common. Domestic dogs do not normally kill for food and their attacks usually lead to indiscriminate mutilation of prey. When they do feed, they tend to leave torn, ragged tissue and splintered bones much like coyotes do. Text on Dogs and Predation
