Reviewed by S.D. Musgrave and G.W. Thrasher. Summary Introduction Vision and Livestock Motion Livestock have wide angle vision. Cattle and pigs have a visual field in excess of 300 degrees (75). In sheep, the visual field ranges from 191 to 306 degrees depending on the amount of wool on the head. Loading ramps and handling chutes should have solid side walls to prevent animals from seeing distractions outside the chute with their wide angle vision (22, 24, 79). Moving objects and people seen through the sides of a chute can cause balking or frighten livestock. Solid side walls are especially important if animals are not completely tame or they are unaccustomed to the facility. Blocking vision will stop escape attempts. This is why a solid portable panel is so effective for handling pigs. Sight restriction will lower stress levels (13, 39). The wildest cow will remain calm in a darkened artificial insemination box which completely blocks vision (70, 86). Even though ruminant animals have depth perception, their ability to perceive depth at ground level while moving with their heads up is probably poor (59). Hutson (50) suggests that there may be an extensive blind area at ground level and moving livestock may not be able to use motion parallax or retinal disparity cues to perceive depth. To see depth on the ground, the animal would have to stop and lower its head. This may explain why livestock often lower their heads and stop to look at strange things on the ground. Cattle, pigs, sheep and horses will often balk and refuse to walk over a drain grate, hose, puddle, shadow or change in flooring surface or texture (22, 24, 62).

Introduction to Medicinal Plants for Livestock
The idea of using medicinal plants to treat livestock is not new. Many of the active ingredients in chemically manufactured drugs were originally derived from plant compounds (e.g., the pyrethroids). Also, in many developing countries, medicinal plants are still being used on a regular basis. (The use of plants and traditional methods for treating animals is called ethnoveterinary medicine .) There is a renewed interest, especially in developed countries, in using plants to treat livestock, pets, and humans. Why?
    • Many people believe that plants are less toxic and safer than manufactured drugs.

"I am very impressed with the tremendous amount of careful research that went into Field Guide to Plants Poisonous to Livestock - Western U.S. This book should be very useful for livestock owners for years to come. As a former reference librarian, I am fussy about reference books, and this one is well-organized, with clear illustrations, and a lot of information about the effects on livestock of the many plants covered."
Rosana Hart, author of Living with Llamas "This is a book that every livestock owner and every veterinarian living west of the Mississippi should own and read."

Blue Skies and Spring Break Add Up to Record Year for Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™
Taking advantage of great weather and spring break, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo had its highest-ever attended event. In all, a record 1,890,174 people went through the gates to enjoy the food, fun and family atmosphere. The crowds had an easier time getting around Reliant Park thanks to the added Ford Trams running between venues, and increased ways getting to and from Reliant Park with the addition of METRORail and new parking options. The following is a brief recap of highlights from the 2004 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo:
  • This year's event drew a record 1,890,174 visitors for general attendance (for all activities on the grounds). The previous record was set in 2000 with 1,889,861 visitors. Rodeo paid attendance topped 1 million for the 10th consecutive year, for a total of 1,126,092. While this was not a new record, it was the third highest paid rodeo attendance in the Show's history. The World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest presented by Miller Lite had a record paid attendance of 183,339 visitors.

116. Your Dog And Livestock
Information about the laws of Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, and tips on how to train dogs to behave around livestock.
http://www.newtownabbey.gov.uk/dogs/livestock.htm
The chasing and killing or worrying of livestock, mainly sheep, is one of the most savage acts a dog owner can be responsible for. Could your dog, gentle and loyal, be capable of such cruel and vicious attacks? Yes. When left unsupervised, ALL dogs, regardless of size, breed or temperament, are a danger to livestock. It is part of a dog's instinct to chase and kill what is to them a potential meal.
Factors leading dogs to worry livestock include boredom, lack of socialisation or attention seeking. Under the Dogs (NI) Order 1983, as amended by the Dangerous Dogs (NI) Order 1991 it is an offence for a person to be the keeper of a dog which attacks livestock. Under the Dogs (NI) Order 1983 as amended by the Dangerous Dogs (NI) Order 1991 it is against the law for dogs to chase or attack livestock. What happens to the dog that has sheep-worried?
