By the end of this module, students should be able to:
1. Discuss and evaluate the role and integration of livestock in organic farming systems with reference to current research in this area.
2. To critically evaluate current legislation relating to animal welfare and management as well as the regulations governing organic livestock production (feeding, housing, transport, breeding policy and health plan etc.) in the United Kingdom and in the European Union.
3. To critically review the key factors governing forage and fodder quality and utilisation and to discuss, giving examples, its contribution to livestock nutrition, health and performance.
4. To identify and evaluate the key factors governing livestock health, and discuss their application in practice, with particular reference to disease prevention through the use of appropriate management strategies.

European Livestock Alliance (ELA)
The European Livestock Alliance (ELA) is a non-profit, German based, pan-European organisation, uniting breeders, keepers, vets, scientists, and specialist elements within Europe's rural infrastructure to preserve the well being, health and safety of humans and animals. ELA promotes animal production and marketing as an integral part of rural infrastructure consistent with high standards of animal welfare, maintenance of genetic diversity, protection of the environment and human health. ELA represents the interests of its members in consultation with the European Commission and national Governments. Its founding members combine expertise at the highest level in a range of disciplines from animal breeding, animal health and welfare, to food quality.
ELA's MISSION STATEMENT
Primary Objectives
  • To encourage, support, advise and develop systems of animal production and conservation in Europe which are compatible with acceptable standards of animal welfare, genetic diversity, protection of the environment and rural infrastructure.
  • To collaborate with other organisations which are sympathetic to the objectives of ELA. These include veterinary, scientific, ecological, conservation, rural and food interests.

by Helene Ragovin Remember Old MacDonald? The one with the farm, the cow, the pig and the rest of the animals roaming around the barnyard and pasture? That storybook image is much closer to the ideal approach to animal welfare than most of today’s agricultural practices, says William Lockeretz. And the widespread disregard for the intrinsic nature of animals that characterizes much of modern farming has unfortunate consequences for both livestock and humans, says Lockeretz, who teaches in the nutrition school’s program on Agriculture, Food and Environment. When it comes to organic farming, William Lockeretz says the United States trails Europe by quite some margin. “It’s a problem, and it got that way from not treating a cow like a cow,” he says. Lockeretz was the sole American to participate in a collaborative research forum on animal welfare sponsored by the European Union from 1999 to 2001. The Network for Animal Health and Welfare in Organic Agriculture included researchers from 17 different institutes in 13 countries. Most recently, Lockeretz edited a comprehensive book on the subject that grew out of the group’s efforts. “The book was a very ambitious project that extended beyond the life of the network,” Lockeretz says. He worked with three other editors, Mette Vaarst from Denmark, Vonne Lund from Norway and Stephen Roderick from Great Britain, on the book

The environment of livestock buildings can be assessed and modified to improve health and welfare and increase productivity. Levels of gas and dust emissions to the environment can also be reduced. Examples of the problems which can be identified and solutions provided for are: Stockman and animal exposure to dust and gases in livestock buildings.

(LR) Projektbeskrivelse: The aim of the project is to describe and develop production systems of organic beef focussing particularly on bull calves or steers from organic dairy farms. The systems should take into consideration animal welfare and health, the farmers economy and the consumers demand of high quality meat. At present, most bull calves from organic dairy farms are sold and reared on conventional farms and the demand for organic meat is not met. The project is part of Ph.d. programme and includes analysis of constraining factors and farmers perception of the problem by means of interviews and questionnaires, production and health recordings on organic farms with steer production and feeding experiments in doors and on pasture (grazing).

    Livestock health
    Tetanus in sheep and goats
Ross Newman, Animal and Plant Health Service
    Key points
    • Tetanus is a common, highly fatal disease in sheep and goats caused by a widespread bacterium.
    • Infection can be effectively and cheaply prevented through vaccination and good hygiene.
    Infection
Tetanus is caused by spores of the bacteria Clostridium tetani . The spores have some important characteristics:
    • common in soil and faeces, remaining infectious for years
    • produce a potent toxin in a suitable, localised wound
    • not destroyed by most common disinfectants.
Infection normally occurs from a wound contaminated by dirt, dust or faeces. Castration, ear-marking, tail-docking, mulesing, dehorning and debudding are all routine surgical procedures creating wounds that can be ideal growth sites for tetanus. Infection can also occur through non-surgical wounds eg dog bites, shearing cuts. The incubation period is usually between three days and three weeks. In this period, the organism multiplies and produces its lethal toxin. The toxin penetrates the nerves around the wound and travels to the spinal cord and brain where it fixes to nerve cells to produce exaggerated and uncontrollable muscle spasms.
