FY 2003 General Fund Reductions
The total FY 2003 general fund reduction applied to the Department of Livestock is $46,110.
Prior to the FY 2003 Special Session the Governor’s general fund reduction to the Department of Livestock was $39,180. The Centralized Services Division general fund budget was reduced by $10,180 in travel and $9,000 in equipment. The Diagnostic Laboratory general fund budget was reduced by $10,000 in contract services and $10,000 in travel.
During the Special Session of FY 2003 an additional $6,930 of general fund was reduced from the Department of Livestock budget. The Central Services Division general fund was reduced by $841 in office supplies. The Diagnostic Laboratory received a $6,089 general fund reduction to cover the department’s 1% global general fund reduction. The budget office and the legislative fiscal office decided to apply the reduction in personal services because funds can be transferred from operations to personal services more readily than from personal services to operations. Consequently, the Lab’s general fund was reduced by $6,089 in personal services.

Known as the largest all-breed, purebred livestock show in the world, the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) draws more than 20,000 entries and approximately 200,000 visitors to Louisville each year.
NAILE is much more than an ordinary showcase of livestock. Throughout
the show, visitors will enjoy the Giant Country Store with its nearly 150 commercial vendors selling everything from fine jewelry and food to western clothing and farm supplies. Global industry standards are annually established during the show as breeders merchandise bloodlines and genetics to local and international interests. Altogether, more than 140 shows, sales, breed meetings, entertainment events, and judging contests will be held during
the 14-day event.
Within the realm of competition, NAILE offers nine major divisions of livestock entries: dairy cattle, dairy goats, llamas and alpacas, quarter horses, draft horses, market swine, beef cattle, boer goats, and sheep. Particular interest is given to the industry's future as seven major youth judging contests take place during the show and assist in preparing the next generation for tomorrow's breeding challenges. All appearing under one roof, these competitions help make NAILE the premier livestock event in the world.
While the show could easily stand on its own, it is rightly complimented by the wild excitement of the North American Championship Rodeo - the invitational finals for the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The Great Lakes Circuit Rodeo Finals brings the top cowboys and cowgirls together to compete for over $70,000 in prizes and the title of Regional Champion. The action is homegrown with the Great Lakes Circuit including participants from Kentucky and the neighboring states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The total purse ranks among the top 10 percent of all PRCA rodeo prize money and is the second largest purse for a circuit finals.
