Improving General Anti-Predator Livestock Management
Mountain lion killed in Utah
Livestock owners may exaggerate their losses to big cats by including losses due to other causes, including poor management techniques. Even on the conservation-minded ranch in Venezuela mentioned earlier, where jaguar hunting was banned despite an increase in calf losses, ranch managers estimated annual losses to big cats at 200 animals, but careful investigation of carcasses by Hoogesteijn et al. (1993) showed that only 40 calves a year were killed by cats. Hoogesteijn et al. (1993) listed other causes of calf loss as: injuries inflicted during round-up or transportation, snake bite, drowning, disease, and slaughter for human consumption. Mizutani adds theft to the list. L. Marker-Kraus (in litt. 1993) cites leg injuries caused by falling into burrows (common in arid regions), abortions in cattle and small stock, poisonous plants, and birthing problems with first-time heifers. Other predators may turn out to have a more significant impact than cats: in a problem zone in south-western Utah, for example, it was estimated that coyotes were responsible for 92% of sheep losses, and pumas for 7% (Bowns 1985).

Use of Genetic Resources for Sustainable Livestock Development

General Introduction
There is general concern that the genetic variation within the few domestic animal species is disappearing through breed substitution and crossbreeding. Any reduction in the diversity of genetic resources narrows the scope to respond to changes in the environment, disease challenges, or demand patterns. In the tropics, however, the most serious concern is the imminent loss of locally adapted breeds. An important strategy in the conservation and utilization of livestock resources is the dissemination of information on these resources. For cattle, Marleen Felius has published ' Cattle Breeds - an encyclopedia (table of contents) . She provides an overview of approximately 700 cattle breeds throughout the world in words and images. The breeds are classified according to geographical distribution, historical background and external features. Information is also given on functions, and adaptive, production and special characteristics. The animals have been drawn to scale, in water-colours. In doing so, Marleen has succeeded in linking-up art and science! The exploitation of genetic resistance to diseases is becoming increasingly important in livestock development programmes, particularly where disease control measures are too costly, too complex to implement, or ecologically unsound. In Africa, a prominent example of under-used genetic resources is trypanotolerant livestock. The use of trypanotolerant livestock is seen as the only practical sustainable way to increase livestock production in tsetse-infested areas.

Attorney General Miller Comment on Proposed USDA Livestock Reporting Rules
DES MOINES. Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller sent a letter April 17 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture submitting a formal Comment on USDA's proposed rules to implement the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act of 1999. For example, Attorney General Miller stated that the new data should be reported on a state and regional level, and not on the national level alone. Because the market for slaughter hogs is in most cases a local market, the proposal to report data only on a national level actually decreases the accuracy of the present regional reporting system, the Comment argues. For more information on the Attorney General's Comment on the proposed rules, please contact Asst. Attorney General Steve Moline of the Farm Division at 515-281-6634. Livestock Production Contract Checklist
INTRODUCTION A. Trend Towards Production Contracting/Definitions. There is a new era of livestock production on the rise in Iowa and across the nation. Traditional patterns of livestock production are giving way to new care and feeding arrangements. Many of these arrangements involve livestock production contracts. A livestock production contract can be defined as an agreement under which a producer agrees to feed and care for livestock owned by a contractor in return for a payment. Production contracts should be distinguished from marketing agreements, cash forward contracts, and futures contracts which involve the sale of livestock produced and owned by the producer.
