Tragedy Update (Livestock - General)
greenspun.com LUSENET Countryside : One Thread User FAQ I posted these folks tragedy several weeks ago of their sheep being purposely hit and killed by a vehicle. Here is an update. Subject: Tragedy update Good Morning, A few weeks ago I told you about five of my ewes being chased down and ran over, I am now happy to tell you that the case has been solved. Thanks to some excellent investigative work done by detective Ron Bauer of the Rusk County Sheriff's department, with the aid of evidence that I and deputy Jim Bugbee collected at the scene, the vehicle and driver have been identified. The case got a big break when someone called the Sheriff's department and reported an individual had told about running over some sheep. I had put a letter to the editor in a couple of state ag papers and an article on the front page of a couple of local newspapers. I was also interviewed for a radio news article that aired on five different stations. It was also the crime of the month with the Rusk County crime stoppers program, the program offers a $1000.00 reward for information about cases in the program. (we got the word out) The driver and his passenger are both 20 year old adults from a neighboring county. In an interview with them and detective Bauer last week, the driver admitted to hitting the ewe on the highway but claimed to now nothing about the ewes on the side road. In another interview this week evidence was presented that placed the vehicle on the side road, he then admitted hitting the rest, however, he claims that he hit a bunch of sheep on the highway injuring several so he ran them over again to kill them and put them out of misery.

General Information Cattle bred for meat production are commonly referred to as beef cattle. Beef is a meat product that is high in protein, iron, zinc and B-vitamins. Some popular beef products are steaks, such as T-bone and Ribeye, roasts, and versatile ground beef products. Cattle bred for milk production are referred to as dairy cattle. Dairy products fall into two major categories, fluid milk and manufactured products, such as cheese, yogurt and butter.
Missouri is the second ranking state in the nation with 1.99 million beef cows. Missouri is ranked 16th in milk production. Missouri dairy farmers produced 2.4 billion pounds of milk in 1997. Missouri's Agricultural Statistics Service can provide further information on Missouri's cattle inventory. Hogs are the source of high quality animal protein in the form of common meat products such as ham, pork chops, pork sausage and bacon. By-products from hogs play a vital role in maintaining the quality of human life. For example, insulin from hogs is used to treat human diabetes; heart valves are used to replace damaged human heart valves; and hog skin is used to treat severe burn victims. Missouri is the sixth largest hog-producing state in the nation, with an inventory of hogs and pigs at 3.55 million animals.

    Livestock Production Contract Checklist
Developed by Attorney General Tom Miller's Production Contracts Task Force
    January 1996
Office of the Attorney General Iowa Department of Justice
    INTRODUCTION
    • Trend Towards Production Contracting/Definitions. There is a new era of livestock production on the rise in Iowa and across the nation. Traditional patterns of livestock production are giving way to new care and feeding arrangements. Many of these arrangements involve livestock production contracts.
A livestock production contract can be defined as an agreement under which a producer agrees to feed and care for livestock owned by a contractor in return for a payment. Production contracts should be distinguished from marketing agreements, cash forward contracts, and futures contracts which involve the sale of livestock produced and owned by the producer.
    • Use of checklist. This checklist has been prepared by Attorney General Tom Miller's Task Force on Production Contracts (the members are listed on page 11). It was developed as an educational tool for producers considering a livestock production contract. The producer is encouraged to ask the type of questions posed in the checklist before signing a contract. No checklist can raise every relevant question, and, conversely, this checklist may raise questions that are not relevant to each producer.
    • References in Checklist.
